16.01.2022 TRIVIA TUESDAY - A Fish Spa This is one of the many amazing examples of symbiotic relationships on The Great Barrier Reef. Two different organisms working toget...her in a way that is mutually beneficial. In this short clip, you can see a large Batfish (Platax orbicularis) hovering over a cleaning station, where a pair of Cleaner Wrasse (Lambroides dimidiatus) are working hard to remove any parasites and dead skin. The Cleaner Wrasses do a little dance, using an upward and downward movement of their tails to alert passers-by that they are open for business. Once they find a client, they get straight to work. This relationship is so vitally important for both species that they even clean inside the mouths of predatory fish! In fact, a study by Waldie P. A., et al (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article), found that when they removed all cleaner wrasse from a reef, juvenile visitor numbers decreased by 65%, resident fish were 37% less abundant and fish species were 23% less diverse! The Great Barrier Reef is such a beautifully intricate environment, filled with relationships, such as this. A change in population to one species can have large and drastic impacts on many others. #Cleaningstation #Batfish #Cleanerwrasse #Greatbarrierreef #lowisles #queensland #seeaustralia #uwphotography #padi #paditv

She was... badly entangled in abandoned fishing gear but with the help of the Maritime Coast Guard and Palma Aquarium Fundación she was brought to safety. The turtle is the largest turtle the Palma Aquarium Rescue Centre has ever had, she is doing well and we hope she will soon be released back to her home. #fundaciónpalmaaquarium #centroderescate #palmaaquarium #weloveoceans #mediterraneansea #seaturtle #seaturtlerescue #caretta #tortugamarina #animal #fauna #mallorca More news about her rescue coming soon! 06.01.2022 DISCOVERY ALERT On October 20th, scientists aboard R/V Falkor discovered and mapped a new 500m tall reef within the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). The last ti...me a reef of this size and geologic significance was discovered was over 120 years ago. The height alone makes it taller than the Empire State Building! While in plain view, the top sits about 40 meters below the sea surface, so is not a navigational barrier. The GBR is the world's largest coral reef and is home to a breathtaking array of marine creatures, including 600 types of soft and hard corals, more than 100 species of jellyfish, 3000 varieties of molluscs, 500 species of worms, 1625 types of fish, 133 varieties of sharks and rays, and more than 30 species of whales and dolphins. However, recent studies have shown that it has lost 50% of its corals in the last three decades, with climate change a key driver of reef disturbance. The time to act is now. Check out our 'Living Coral Biobank' website to find out what we are doing to help save the reef! https://coralbiobank.org/ Repost @schmidtocean and @savethereef

01.01.2022 For those of you who don't know JR had a stroke on September 2nd, 2020. It was quite a large one, and over the last week he has slowly slipped away from us, into a deeper and deeper slumber. He is now unresponsive but thank goodness he is extremely comfortable, and extremely peaceful, and is spending his last hours and days being pampered by his loved ones. If you would like to stay up to date, or share a memory, photo, video or message, please click on the link below. We love you JR, our leader, our family, our inspiration. We know you will be swimming with the minkes very very soon xxxx
