25.01.2022 We have had some very distressing reports of dolphins being repeatedly harassed by vessels and jetskis. Whilst we all love to enjoy our summers on the water, please respect the dolphins are wild animals and need to go about their feeding, resting and calving in an undisturbed state. In Victoria, please do not approach dolphins within 100m if you're on a powered OR unpowered vessel, and if you're on a jetski please do not approach within 300m. If you find it hard to read dis...tances on the water here's a little helpful hint... if you're on a jetski and you cannot visualise approximately 100 jetskis in between you and the dolphins, you're too close...if you cant visualise four planes, you're too close! For more information on the approach regulations please visit https://marinemammal.org.au/approachdistance/ In Victoria, if you see a sick, injured or stranded dolphin please call the Whale and Dolphin Emergency Hotline on 1300 136 017 Please share widely to raise awareness.

25.01.2022 It is great to see people excited by their encounters with wild dolphins in our watery backyard. Its also important to remember to adhere to the regulations when interacting with marine mammals. Swimmers and boats are not permitted to approach dolphins within 100m. This is not only for the safety of these amazing animals, but for our safety as well, while still providing them with the choice to interact

24.01.2022 So incredibly honoured to be awarded the Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable Cities Litter (Community) Award for 2020!

23.01.2022 Wow! So many humpback whales and migratory feeding activity

23.01.2022 Super pod of dolphins! What a sight Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania

23.01.2022 We are saddened by the recent loss of four of our resident Gippsland Lakes Burrunan dolphins. Based on our long-term research of the dolphins in the population, we have identified the deceased dolphins, and have been closely monitoring the heath of the others within the small population. Across 2020 we have continued to undertake our on-water research surveys, following strict COVID-safe protocols and having all required approvals in place. Unfortunately, we have been observ...ing increasing health concerns in the population over the past few surveys. It is a complex situation with many changes in environmental conditions. We continue to work closely with DELWP and EGCMA, and will be increasing our survey effort over the summer period to continue to monitor the situation. We encourage the community to report any sightings and strandings, but please do follow the Wildlife (Marine Mammal) Regulations and remain 100m away from dolphin in powered and unpowered vessels, and 300m for jetskis, and do not interfere with live, dead, inured or stranded dolphins. We thank the community for their ongoing conservation of the Burrunan dolphin. Dr Kate, Director, Marine Mammal Foundation See more

22.01.2022 This week is SeaWeek, a national campaign run by the Australian Association for Environmental Education Inc. to raise awareness of the importance of the sea and all the amazing animals that live within! The theme for 2020 is 'The sea supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems', which couldn't be more true in Australia. We have the third largest marine territory, and are one of the most richly biodiverse developed countries in the world, with many species being endemic ...to Australian waters. Not only are our marine environments rich in diversity, they provide food, recreation and jobs for many people around our country. In addition, the dense kelp forests that skirt around the southern border of Australia, from WA to Northern NSW, create a large carbon sink and could help us in the battle against climate change. How will you be celebrating SeaWeek this week? #SeaWeek2020 #marinediversity #bluecarbon #marineeducation #marinemammalfoundation #marinelitterproject

22.01.2022 Thank you to the Whitecliffs to Camerons Bight Foreshore Reserve for having Matt along to present today! 21.01.2022 The Marine Champions program was developed to provide passionate young people with the opportunity to become involved with the Foundation and have guidance when pursuing marine science as a career path. These Marine Champions are the future guardians of our environment. We at MMF continue to focus our education efforts on young people so that they can strengthen their community’s environment from the bottom-up. Our work relies on the on-going support of the community, and sm...all monthly donations help us to cover the on-going costs of MMF works like Marine Champions. This Giving Tuesday, please help us share this program with students who may not be able to afford the $120 membership fee. To donate, head to https://marinemammal.org.au/donate. As little as $10 each month helps us provide a scholarship to turn a student into a Marine Champion and ensure the protection of our community’s environment far into the future. #GivingTuesday #regulargiving #donate #donations #fundraising #notforprofit #charity #marinechampions #youth #youthinscience #youngpeople #community #environment #membership #marinescience #sciencecareer #marinemammal #marinemission #dolphin #burrunandolphin #conservation

19.01.2022 Today is World Car-Free Day and as the climate heats up, it is the perfect time to take the heat off the planet and do our bit to reduce climate change. Each year, people around the world leave their cars at home and choose more sustainable means of travel to go about their day. From walking to rollerblading to skating (or swimming!), there are many ways to get from A to B that both save the planet and improve our health (and give us a perfect way to spend our daily time outs...ide). Whats your favourite way to travel without a car? #WorldCarFreeDay #CarFreeDay

19.01.2022 My favourite recycling tip is a handy little jingle: 1,2,3: recycle me. Each type of plastic has its own Resin Identification Number (RIN) which can be found somewhere on products made of recyclable material, usually on the label or on the bottom of the product. From the RIN you can work out if the product is made from a plastic that is able to be recycled. For my local area, anything with RIN one, two or three can be disposed of in regular recycling (with a few exceptions such as cling wrap, which sometimes has a RIN code 3). Have a look at your council website to find out what RINs your local area will accept for recycling. #NationalRecyclingWeek #recycling #recycleme #recycle #landfill #localcouncil #marinedebris #marineentanglement #marinelitterproject

19.01.2022 The Gippsland Lakes Marine Champions had a great day sampling the shoreline around the Cunningham Arm Jetty in Lakes Entrance on Friday. They were looking for signs of microplastic using the AUSMAP sampling methodology. We found pieces of polystyrene foam, hard plastic fragments and off-cuts of discarded marine rope, among other micro and macroplastics. While this was just a practice run, the Marine Champions were amazed at the amount of microplastic we found, despite there b...eing no sign of plastic fragments on the surface of the sand. We can’t wait to get our hands on some AUSMAP-certified equipment so we can send our findings off to the lab. Do you know a young person that is passionate about marine science and environmental stewardship? 17.01.2022 Hi everyone, my name is Matt and I am the Outreach Education Officer at MMF. In my role, I get to spend a lot of time in communities across Victoria speaking about our amazing Burrunan dolphins, marine mammals, and all the simple actions we can take to make a positive difference for marine environments in our homes, schools and businesses. I think it is important to lead by example, and one of the easiest and most effective sustainability actions I implement is using reusable... shopping bags. I keep bags in a basket by my front door, and its so simple to grab a few every time I head out for my shopping and fruit and veg. 15.01.2022 We received some great reports of southern right whales yesterday...unfortunately along with these, were reports of drones breaching the regulations Please note all aircraft (including helicopters and drones) must not approach within 500 vertical metres, within a 500 metre radius, of a whale, dolphin or seal. We ask you to please share widely to minimise disturbance of the amazing creatures Under the Wildlife Act 1975, people who undertake illegal interactions with whales, dolphins and seals could be subject to fines or face imprisonment. Illegal interactions can be reported to the Office of the Conservation Regulator via the DELWP Customer Service Centre on 136 186. If in doubt, report it! You can remain anonymous if you wish. For full details on the Regulations, please check out the DELWP page

15.01.2022 Hi Im Jacinta; I'm the Education Coordinator at MMF and I am conscious of making sure to reduce my plastic usage everyday. A few of my favourite everyday items at home are my bamboo toothbrush and my bamboo charcoal dental floss. The toothbrush is biodegradable - the best way to dispose of the brush is to pull out the bristles (they are nylon and recyclable - check with your local council though!), or cut off the head, and pop the handle in the compost. Much like the rest o...f the team I can't live without my takeaway coffee cups, green bags and lace bags for fruit and veggies, beeswax wraps and my loose leaf tea strainer - although a lot of the time my husband and I just go for the classic teapot approach to make tea for both of us! My husband and I are expecting our first child in late September so we are checking out reusable cloth nappies too, so if you have suggestions for good brands, Im all ears! @plasticfreejuly #choosetorefuse #singleuseplastic #plasticfree #plasticfreeliving #plasticpollution #zerowaste #towardszerowaste #marinedebris #marinelitterproject #marinemammal #marinemammalfoundation

14.01.2022 Capping off our Marine Champions Summer program, the Port Phillip cohort spent the day crossing the Bay! We caught the Searoad Ferry from Sorrento across to Queenscliff, searching the horizon for signs of dorsal fins or tail flukes. In Queenscliff, we walked to the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre, where Alex showed us some incredible marine and freshwater species found in Victoria. It was amazing to get up close with some of the species found in the Bay in the touchta...nk (including elephant snails, sea apples, abalone, sea stars, and 15-year-old hermit crabs!), and to see lots of other species in their display exhibits. After finishing up at the Discovery Centre, we headed back to Sorrento on the Ferry from Queenscliff. Some of us were even lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some Burrunans in the distance! A massive thank you to Searoad Ferries and the The Marine Discovery Centre - QUEENSCLIFF VICTORIA AUSTRALIA for hosting us for the day, and especially to Alex for showing us around the Centre! 14.01.2022 Thank Fluke it’s Friday! Our research team have to be quick thinkers when out on survey to capture the photo data we need to understand our Burrunan dolphin populations. Here we can see Head of Research Dr Kate and research assistant Hayley snapping their pictures in perfect sync! It can be tricky to predict where our dolphins will surface, so our researchers have to be constantly scanning the water surrounding our research vessel to ensure we get the images we need. We also... listen for the sounds of dolphins surfacing and breathing through their blowholes, and will quickly look to the source of these sounds to try to catch an image of their fin. In this process, Kate and Hayley’s ‘twinning’ photography makes for great footage! #tfif #thankflukeitsfriday #research #burrunandolphin #projectburrunan #marinemammal #endangeredspecies #conservation #marinemammalresearch

14.01.2022 This month is Biodiversity Month so to celebrate, we will be sharing interesting facts about the animals found in Aussie waters. Do you know why the Marine Mammal Foundation was established? MMF started in 2013, when Dr Kate Robb discovered, named, and formally described a new species of dolphin in south-east Australian waters; the Burrunan dolphin! This dolphin had previously been assumed to be the common bottlenose dolphin or the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, but Dr Kate... found out it was neither! Through genetic analysis, Dr Kate discovered that it was not only a completely different species of dolphin, but that it is the most ancestral node for all bottlenose dolphins, splitting over 1 million years ago. Have you spotted these beauties around the Bay? #BiodiversityMonth #Biodiversity

11.01.2022 Happy Earth Day! Thanks to earthday.org we recognise this day to celebrate all of the weird and wonderful creatures we are lucky to experience in our natural environments. In particular, Earth Day draws attention to the species of plants and animals that are threatened or endangered in these environments. The Burrunan dolphin is recognised under Victoria’s FFG Act as endangered, and the team at MMF work to understand the threats and dangers faced by this species in their na...tural environment. 11.01.2022 Happy National NAIDOC Week! As we celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia, and recognise their contributions to our history and culture, MMF would also like to acknowledge the scientific knowledge our First Nations people have gained and shared through their Dreaming stories. The invaluable understating of the environment held by Indigenous people is a direct result of the tens of thousands of years they have spent as custodian...s of our land and sea, and we must value their involvement in science, in particular in conservation. Marinda Pattison, a proud Yorta Yorta woman from the Barmah Lakes area of the Murray River, honours student at RMIT and research associate at MMF, recently submitted a dissertation as part of her study discussing the example of Nairm (Port Phillip Bay) and how scientific evidence collected over the decades corroborates the Dreaming story told about Nairm’s creation. Our recent blog details an excerpt from her dissertation in honour of NAIDOC week. The Marine Mammal Foundation acknowledges and pays respects to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the contribution of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. #NAIDOC #NAIDOCweek #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #dreaming #portphillipbay #marinescience

10.01.2022 This Giving Tuesday, MMF are seeking support from generous community members to assist us in our research effort to better understand the health impacts on the Gippsland population of Burrunan dolphins highlighted in various media sources. The recent Burrunan dolphin deaths mean the Research Team will need to be spending more time on the water assessing the health and condition of the population, more time processing and analysing the thousands of images collected, processin...g water quality data, and all with the aim of bettering understand the drivers of this devastating situation. However, we need your help to make this possible. If you are in a position to do so, please consider making a donation via https://marinemammal.org.au/donate/ or becoming a part of our regular giving community. Any sized donation, small or large, will contribute to cutting edge research efforts in the Gippsland Lakes this summer and into the future. #GivingTuesday #regulargiving #donate #donations #fundraising #notforprofit #environment #environmentalhealth #Gippsland #GippslandLakes #research #data #datprocessing #marinescience #marinemammal #marinemission #dolphin #burrunandolphin #conservation

10.01.2022 We are often asked...Can you recycle plastic bags? The answer is YES! Soft or ‘scrunchable’ plastics can be recycled via the REDcycle program from RED Group. You can find REDcycle bins at most supermarkets. Did you know an estimated 429,000 recyclable plastic bags are thrown away each hour in Australia? Unfortunately only 3% of Australia’s plastic bags are being recycled and this doesn’t include other common grocery packaging such as bread bags, frozen food bags, chip and bis...cuit packets, rice and pasta bags. Of course we encourage people to RETHINK their choice at the supermarket and bring reusable bags... but if you do get items with scrunchable plastics, you can keep them together and drop them off at your local REDcycle bins. The plastic is recycled and made into hundreds of different products and reduces the need for using virgin plastic. For more information on the REDcycle program visit https://www.redcycle.net.au/ #NationalRecyclingWeek #recycling #recycleme #recycle #redcycle #softplastic #landfill #marinedebris #marineentanglement #marinelitterproject

06.01.2022 Rain, hail or shine you’ll see the MMF team out researching the Endangered Burrunan dolphins! Despite the drizzle, it was a stunning morning and a great sighting. In the pod was ‘Wee agoon dulabup’ named by Boonwurrung Elders meaning Live Dolphin, in recognition of its fighting spirit after an encounter with a vessel. Dulabup is an important reminder to keep your distance when boating on our waterways (100m in powered/unpowered vessels and 300m on a jetski). Of course if the ...dolphins choose to approach you, as they did in this encounter, please slow down and maintain your course. If you’re lucky enough to sight dolphins, you can help our research by logging your sighting in Dolphin Spotting Victoria. 06.01.2022 Hi my name is Chantel, I'm one of the PhD researchers at MMF. I've been transitioning to a plastic free bathroom and kitchen for a little while now - I think I'm just about there!! I use Australian made bars for body and face wash, shampoo and conditioner, and choose refill or glass options where I can for other products. I recently invested in a safety razor - which means no more wasted plastic razors or razor heads, I just replace the blades themselves! There's SO many non-...plastic toothbrush and floss options now too!! In the kitchen I use compostable or washable dishcloths and a dish bar, buy bulk food in recycled or old jars or reusable produce bags where I can. Wax wraps or silicone food covers and baking sheets make great cling wrap and baking paper alternatives. I even make my own oat and nut mylk with no plastic from store to coffee! These are a lot of changes to make overnight, so instead, next time you run out of one of these products consider if there might be a plastic free alternative that's right for you, and choose that one instead. Imagine the plastic bottles and waste we save if we can all manage some small switches at home, now more than ever I think it's becoming clear, we're all in this together! @plasticfreejuly #choosetorefuse #singleuseplastic #plasticfree #plasticfreeliving #plasticpollution #zerowaste #towardszerowaste #marinedebris #marinelitterproject #marinemammal #marinemammalfoundation

04.01.2022 Thank Fluke it's Friday! We've all heard of the Great Barrier Reef, but have you heard of the Great Southern Reef? Located on the southern edge of Australia, the Great Southern Reef stretches from Kalbarri in WA to Northern NSW and is home to dense kelp forests, Australian sealions and giant cuttlefish, among other species. This reef system is incredibly diverse and is home to many species that are not found elsewhere in the world! This ecosystem is extremely valuable as kelp... and other seaweeds sequester large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and could be key in fighting climate change. Also known as 'blue carbon' ecosystems, these ecosystems can sequester up to 20 times as much carbon dioxide per acre than land-based forests! #thankfluke #tfif #greatsouthernreef #bluecarbon

02.01.2022 Through-out the week, we have shared tips on recycling plastic and electronic waste, but did you know that in Australia, one in five shopping bags of food end up in landfill each year? This is a massive amount of food, but there are a few ways you can recycle your food waste to give it a second use! The most common way to recycle food waste is through composting. It is easy to set up an at home system and has the added benefit of helping your garden grow. Many local councils ...are also beginning to bring in food waste recycling schemes so check with your local office to get started today. Other ways to recycle food include using coffee grinds mixed with coconut oil as a face and body scrub and using vegetable peels to make your own stock. #NationalRecyclingWeek #recycling #recycleme #recycle #landfill #foodwaste #compost #localcouncil #marinedebris #marineentanglement #marinelitterproject

01.01.2022 Thank Fluke it's Friday! Last week a blue whale was spotted off the coast of Sydney, only the third sighting in almost 100 years! Blue Whales are the largest animal on the planet, and the whale that was spotted around Sydney is estimated to be 25m long and weigh 100 tonnes. You can read more about this sighting at the news story here: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//sydney-sights-invisibl... Blue Whale sightings are quite rare as they generally live far out at sea and have dispersed populations. We don't have a lot of data on their migration habits or critical habitat which makes it difficult to anticipate when and where they might be. #TFIF #bluewhale #marinemammal #marinemammalfoundation
