25.01.2022 It's going to be good weather for boating this weekend but if you usually fish on your local river, make sure you're home before sundown tomorrow to catch Reel Action TV - this week's episode is just for you. River fishing can be tough with big tides and constantly moving fish. Reel Action host Michael Guest says the secret is to fish the structure. Wayne and Riley Gordon join Guesty this week fishing from the salt upstream into brackish water targeting flathead, bream and ba...ss on soft plastics. Catch Reel Action TV on TEN Bold on Saturday from 5pm - and last week's episode is on repeat Saturday morning at 6am on TEN. Watch out for the Marine Rescue NSW safety tips during each week's episode.
25.01.2022 Congratulations to the Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Alpine Lakes, Les Threlfo ESM, who received his Order of Australia Medal (OAM) from the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), at Government House in Canberra last weekend. The award was well-deserved recognition for Mr Threlfos tireless service to his local community through his work as a member of the Alpine Lakes unit, Cooma State Emergency Service and Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue. A founding member of the first inland Marine Rescue NSW unit, which provides a dedicated marine rescue service on the hazardous Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene, Mr Threlfo has served continuously as Unit Commander since the units formation in 2011.

24.01.2022 Excitement is building at the Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking unit with their new 12 metre vessel BH30 getting closer to delivery. The new vessel will provide greater speed, maneuverability and operator comfort, enhancing our volunteers ability to respond quickly to emergencies and to be out on the water longer. The photos show BH30 after a deep clean following the completion of works by Yamba Welding & Engineering Pty Ltd.
24.01.2022 UPDATE: Two people have been winched from the water by a rescue helicopter after their boat overturned earlier tonight. The two people were found 4nm from the location where their boat was reported to have overturned, between Murrays Beach and Point Perpendicular. A crew from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay, who responded to the emergency on board Jervis Bay 40, are now searching for the boat between Callala Point and Hare Point.
24.01.2022 LIFE-SAVING BOOST FOR MARINE RESCUE CENTRAL COAST Volunteers from Marine Rescue Central Coast unit will be better equipped to respond to medical emergencies in the course of their duties, with Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch handing a new defibrillator to the unit. Mr Crouch presented the equipment, worth $2,500, to Unit Commander Duncan Coles and unit members on behalf of Emergency Services Minister David Elliott.... Our Marine Rescue Central Coast volunteers play a vital role in keeping our many, many local and visiting boaters safe, he said. This defibrillator will now help them save lives on both the water and shore when a patient needs to be revived in a serious medical emergency. Mr Elliott said emergency services members worked tirelessly to keep the community safe and with a record $1.7 billion budget, they would get every resource they needed. The State Government has invested $37.6 million over four years to deliver Marine Rescue NSW 38 new rescue vessels, improve volunteer facilities and continue upgrading the marine radio network. Advanced first aid equipment, including defibrillators and oxygen kits, are standard equipment on Marine Rescue NSW rescue vessels. The new defibrillator will be installed at the units rescue vessel base on Terrigal Haven. UC Coles thanked Mr Crouch and Minister Elliott for the life-saving equipment. All our volunteers are trained in advanced first aid and CPR, he said. This new equipment is a valuable asset for members of our community in need of immediate first aid assistance in a serious emergency, when minutes can mean the difference between life and death. We hope we dont need to use it but were better equipped now to respond to emergencies on land as well as the water. Photo: Hon. Adam Crouch MP hands the defibrillator to Marine Rescue Radio Operator and First Aid Instructor Sally Allen. Marine Rescue Central Coast vessel CC30 on the water.

23.01.2022 MARINE ROO-SCUE AT BALLINA Our Marine Rescue Ballina volunteers spied an unusual rescue from their radio tower yesterday. A wallaby had run into a bit of trouble crossing the river against the tide.... Using a surfboard, the tiring wallaby was helped by local resident Cooper to get to safety. Another local, Lenny, gave a hand to lift him up onto dry land, while our members called the local WIRES team. After a quick once over, the healthy, but tired, wallaby was released into the scrub around the base where it had come from. Thanks to all involved, especially local legends Cooper and Lenny. 23.01.2022 Volunteers from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay have recovered a 4.5 metre fishing boat that overturned in rough conditions at sunset last night, throwing two fishermen overboard off Point Perpendicular at the entrance to the bay. NSW Police Force report that the two 31-year-old men were fishing when a large wave hit their boat, capsizing it. The men called Triple Zero (000), sparking a sea and air search off Jervis Bay. A crew from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay on board Jervis Bay 40 ...immediately deployed to search between Murrays Beach and Point Perpendicular. The missing men were located by the Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopter and winched to safety about 6.40pm. Police said neither man was wearing a lifejacket at the time they were rescued. Jervis Bay 40 continued to scour the water for the upturned boat feared to be floating just below the surface, posing a navigation hazard to other boats in the area - before the search was suspended last night. Two vessels from MR Jervis Bay headed out early this morning to resume the search. The fishermens boat was located offshore by a Navy vessel before JB 40, with Unit Commander Tony Dagger at the helm, retrieved it and returned it to shore. UC Dagger said the rescue underscored the vital importance of wearing a lifejacket when out on the water. But for the quick response of the emergency services, this rescue could have had a very different outcome, he said. With the summer boating season upon us, its vital that everyone on every boat heading out on the water is wearing a lifejacket. Photo shows crew members Lew Smith and Brian McFarlane securing the boat to JB40 Remember, if youre the skipper, your safety, and that of everyone on your boat, is your responsibility.

22.01.2022 Despite the fierce conditions out on the water today, with heat and gale force winds, a few hardy souls are out making the most of the conditions. That's providing a little work for our volunteers with our Marine Rescue Shoalhaven vessel SA 30 responding to a mayday call south south east of the entrance of the Crookhaven River near Nowra this morning. In difficult weather conditions, SA 30 quickly reached the vessel and its two occupants, and placed the vessel under tow. The... video shows the view from land as SA 30 tows the vessel to safety. With conditions on the water in many parts of the state continuing to deteriorate, please ensure your vessel and your skills are adequate for the conditions if you are heading out on the water.
22.01.2022 A crew from Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking has joined the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in an operation to try to free an entangled whale off Sydneys Royal National Park. The crew of Port Hacking 30 is on scene about 300 metres off Wattamolla, south of Port Hacking, with NPWS and NSW Maritime vessels. The whale is believed to be anchored to the seabed, possibly by fishing debris, but is still alive and breathing.... The crew of PH 30, Unit Commander Noel Parkinson, Jeff OBrien and Greater Sydney Regional Operations Manager Glenn Evans, will provide all possible support to the National Parks personnel in a bid to free this giant of the deep.
22.01.2022 Our Marine Rescue Middle Harbour vessel MH 30 and Marine Rescue Port Jackson vessel PJ 20 looked mighty fine at the Summer Safety launch yesterday at the Man O'War Steps next to the Opera House. Both vessels, along with all others in our fleet, are ready to assist today as deteriorating weather with rising seas and increasing wind make for challenging boating conditions. Please ensure you check the latest weather conditions before setting out, Log On and Log Off with Marine R...escue on VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue App, and wear a life jacket at all times while on the water. 22.01.2022 Off Ballina on the NSW North Coast this morning our Marine Rescue Point Danger vessel PD 20 was accompanied on its journey between Yamba and Tweed Heads by a pod of dolphins. How cool was that?! Dolphins don't need to Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue NSW, but if you're heading out this weekend, please remember to Log On and Log Off on VHF Channel 16 or via the free MarineRescue App.
22.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day, held each year on World Suicide Prevention Day. With the bushfires and COVID-19 its been a tough year for a lot of us. Something as simple as asking "Are you OK?" can help build connections and start a potentially life-saving conversation. For more information, visit the RUOK website: www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day
21.01.2022 This video from ABC Mid North Coast shows lots of debris in the water on the Hastings River. All rivers on the North Coast and Mid North Coast have high debris loads from the recent flooding. Consider delaying heading out on the water until river and estuary conditions improve. When you do head out, keep a close watch for debris, and remember it can be submerged.... Log On with Marine Rescue when you head out on VHF Channel 16 or via the free Marine Rescue NSW app, and always wear a life jacket.
21.01.2022 The busy summer holiday season is underway, and during December Marine Rescue NSW crews launched 435 rescue missions, returning 892 adults, 150 children and 12 animals to safety. Flat batteries accounted for 46 rescues, with groundings (28) and capsizes (18). Holiday season is family time, and if you are taking them out on the water, these rescues are a timely reminder of the importance of boating safely and carrying safety gear on board. ... Everyone on board should be wearing a life jacket, and you can even get one for your dog. Flares, a VHF marine radio, V-sheet and an EPIRB are other important safety items, especially if you are heading offshore. During December, the busiest MRNSW units on the water were Lake Macquarie (58 missions), Botany Port Hacking (40), Port Stephens (31), Port Jackson (24), and the MR Terrey Hills radio team who coordinated the response to 40 incidents. Thanks to all our volunteers saving lives on the water.
21.01.2022 Did you know that Marine Rescue NSW uses Rescue Water Craft (RWCs) to undertake rescues? The quick response and manoeuvrability of these craft make them particularly well suited to working on hazardous coastal bars and shallow waterways hard for our rescue boats to access. Last weekend volunteers from Marine Rescue Brunswick undertook vital training on the Brunswick River to practice the skills required to use RWCs safely and effectively. Great work by our Brunswick volunteers!
21.01.2022 A woman being swept out to sea near the Norah Head lighthouse tonight has been rescued. A crew from Marine Rescue Norah Head was tasked to respond to reports of a female in the water under the lighthouse being carried approximately 300m out to sea about 8.40pm. The crew of rescue vessel Norah Head 20 was set to deploy when the Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrived on scene, locating the woman and winching her to safety.

20.01.2022 Emergency services are under way to rescue a boat that activated an EPIRB and may have overturned 22 nautical miles off Sydney Heads. The radio operators at Marine Rescue Terrey Hills deployed a crew from Marine Rescue Middle Harbour on board rescue vessel Middle Harbour 30 after receiving a Mayday call from the vessel, ESE of the heads. A vessel from the Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force also is responding and there are a number of private boats in the area, about 6nm from the vessel, which might be able to provide immediate assistance until rescue crews are on scene.
20.01.2022 While our Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking vessel BH 31 was busy on Botany Bay, its sister vessel X-Ray 22 was just as busy rescuing boaters on Port Hacking. This family was pleased to be rescued after their jet ski failed to start near Deeban Spit this afternoon. The jet ski was towed to Gannons Bay. Great work Botany Port Hacking team!
20.01.2022 Two crews from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay are resuming a search this morning for a boat that overturned late yesterday afternoon, throwing two men on board into the water. The two men were winched from the water by a Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopter after spending about 90 minutes in the water at the entrance to Jervis Bay. Emergency services were called to the water between Bowan Island and Point Perpendicular following reports a boat had capsized about 5pm yesterday (Septemb...er 10). Police were told two men both aged 31 had been fishing when their boat capsized after being hit by a large wave, throwing them into the water. The men managed to contact Triple Zero (000) on a mobile phone. Officers from South Coast Police District, assisted by Marine Rescue Jervis Bay and the Toll Ambulance helicopter attended, with the men retrieved from the water around 6.40pm. They were both treated for mild hypothermia and some cuts and abrasions before being taken to Shoalhaven Hospital. Neither man was wearing a life jacket when rescued. The crews of rescue vessels Jervis Bay 40 and Jervis Bay 40 are about to head out to search for the small white aluminium dinghy, which could be floating just under the surface, posing a navigational hazard to other vessels. Boaters in the area should keep a careful lookout for the boat.
19.01.2022 Members of Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie have today celebrated the official opening of their new landmark Search and Rescue Coordination Centre on Swansea Head, which has been purpose-designed to keep boaters even safer on local waterways. Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott opened the $1.8 million facility, which is the first new volunteer operations base developed thanks to the State Government’s four-year investment of $37.6 million in Marine Rescue NSW. MR...NSW Directors, Commissioner Stacey Tannos and Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell, Yasmin Catley MP for Swansea, Greg Piper MP for Lake Macquarie, Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser, Carol Proctor from the Bahtabah Aboriginal Land Council and members of the local emergency services and community joined the unit’s volunteers for today’s event, which began with a smoking ceremony. Mr Elliott said the facility meant the Lake Macquarie volunteers now had an operations base that was specifically designed to support them in their work to keep watch over the boating community and save lives on the water. It is fitted with the very latest marine communications and search and rescue technology, significantly enhancing their ability to listen for distress calls from boaters in trouble and respond to emergencies around the clock, he said. The NSW Government is proud to support the volunteers from Marine Rescue NSW and especially to provide them with the facilities they need to provide an even greater service to the boating community on the Hunter and Central coasts and Lake Macquarie. The new centre replaces the unit's former cramped and ageing radio base, in which its volunteers had operated for decades. It is equipped with the latest generation of online marine radio technology for four radio operators and dedicated command and control facilities for planning, managing and coordinating extended and multi-agency search and rescue operations. MRNSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos thanked the State Government for its four-year investment in new and refurbished operating facilities, 38 new rescue boats and continued upgrading of the State’s marine radio network. This funding is boosting our rescue capability and ensuring our volunteers have fit-for-purpose facilities designed and equipped for modern emergency management and that means greater safety for our boating community, he said. Unit Commander Malcolm Druce said the new building was the culmination of extensive planning and input by the unit’s volunteers. This new centre is already enhancing our operations and providing our members with a safe, secure working environment. We are confident that such first-rate facilities will also help us encourage new members to join the unit, he said. Photos: Brad Whittaker
19.01.2022 Do you have a Personal Water Craft (jet ski)? Did you know that Logging On and Logging Off with Marine Rescue NSW is not just for boats? 18.01.2022 A year has passed since last year's devastating fires on the South Coast, and although the weather has turned from fires to floods, the service of the many volunteers who contributed to the bushfire response has not been forgotten. This week it was the turn of volunteers from Marine Rescue Bermagui to receive the NSW Premier's Bushfire Emergency Citation. Members of MR Bermagui provided support for evacuees at the Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club in various roles. Throughout Ja...nuary the fires continued to burn and MR Bermagui members continued to help out at the surf club and the Emergency Management Centre in Bega, as well as providing support at the RFS radio room in Bega to give their radio operators a well earned rest. Pictured are Lauren Lowder, Denis Walker, Lynda Bailey, Caron Parfitt, Debbie Worgan and Steve Knight with Unit Commander Caron Parfitt. Congratulations and thank you for your service.

18.01.2022 Its Weather Wednesday! If you have a barometer on your boat, did you know that the Bureau of Meteorology now offers a service to allow you to calibrate it? For NSW youll need to be in Sydney, Port Kembla or Newcastle. You can access the page here: http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/portairpressure.shtml A table provides links to the closest Automatic Weather Station for key ports around Australia. These weather stations update their barometric observations every half hour.... You can then calibrate your marine barometer in real time and at regular intervals.

A Marine Rescue Cottage Point crew headed north to take the boat under tow, rendezvousing with a crew from Marine Rescue Central Coast at Box Head. The crew of Central Coast 21 took over the tow from Cottage Point 30 and returned the 15-tonne catamaran to safety.
18.01.2022 NSW Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott today formally opened the new $84,000 Marine Rescue Brunswick training and meeting centre beside the town’s boat harbour. Mr Elliott said the new facility had been developed with a $30,000 contribution from the State Government’s four-year investment of $37.6 million in Marine Rescue NSW. The Minister joined MRNSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos, Northern Rivers Director Darcy Henriksen and Brunswick unit members to official...ly open the doors to the facility. This new centre means the Brunswick volunteers for the first time have their own dedicated space for their training activities to ensure they are ready to keep watch over the large number of local and visiting boaters here on the coast, Mr Elliott said. The NSW Government is proud to support the volunteers from Marine Rescue NSW and especially to help provide them with the facilities they need to provide an even greater service to our boating community. The Brunswick unit also has recently expanded its capability with the addition of two Rescue Water Craft jet skis which will help ensure its members are quickly on the scene of an emergency, particularly on the treacherous Brunswick bar." Commissioner Tannos thanked the State Government for its four-year investment in new and refurbished operating facilities, 38 new rescue boats and continued upgrading of the State’s marine radio network. This funding is boosting our rescue capability and ensuring our volunteers have fit-for-purpose facilities for modern emergency management and that means greater safety for our boating community, he said. The remaining funding for the building came from a $50,000 bequest from the estate of local medical practitioner Dr Suresh Rananavare. Unit Commander Jonathon Wilcock said the new building was the culmination of extensive planning and input by the unit’s volunteers. We previously had to rent a local hall for our unit meetings and training. The funding from the NSW Government and the generous bequest from Dr Rananavare’s estate has enabled us to have our own dedicated space, he said. We also were fortunate to receive an Emergency Volunteer Support Scheme grant for almost $4,400 to help us fully equip and fit-out the centre with the audio-visual tools, IT resources and furniture we need for our training. The new facility is already enhancing our operations and providing our members with a safe, secure working environment. Our unit has trained extremely hard to develop its skills and we maintain our equipment at the highest level to be rescue ready 24/7. We are confident that such first-rate facilities will also help us encourage new members to join the unit.
17.01.2022 A beautiful day in Pittwater sees our BB20 crew helping a 4.8m runabout back to the Bayview boat ramp from Lion Island. Our members get a thrill when we can help our community.
17.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW crews are ready to save lives around the clock. Last year, our crews launched 266 rescue missions between 6pm and 5am. Night operations are inevitably more challenging and potentially hazardous. That's why our teams dedicate extra time throughout the year to night training exercises to help build their navigational skills and situational awareness in the dark.... Both rescue vessels from Marine Rescue Port Jackson were out on Sydney Harbour last night.

17.01.2022 Crews from Marine Rescue Cottage Point and Marine Rescue Hawkesbury are continuing to search for a kayaker missing on the Hawkesbury River since Saturday. A search on the water and riverbanks yesterday failed to find any trace of the man and the two crews have headed out again this morning with Broken Bay Water Police. Police have appealed for public assistance to locate Stephen South, 52, who was last seen about 8.30am on Saturday at his workplace on Kowan Road, Mooney Moone...y. Officers from Ku-ring-gai Police Area Command were notified of his disappearance after he failed to return home after going out on his ocean ski on the Hawkesbury. The blue and red ski he was using was located on the northern side of Long Island on Saturday evening. Stephen is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall with a slim build, bald head and short grey facial hair. He was last seen wearing long blue pants and a blue top. Police and family hold concerns for his welfare as his disappearance is out of character. Anyone who sees Stephen, or believes they know his whereabouts, is urged to contact Ku-ring-gai Police or Crime Stoppers. Photos: Sarah Adair, MR Hawkesbury.

14.01.2022 Heres the WIN News story on Marine Rescue Jervis Bays retrieval of a 4.5 metre boat that overturned last night. Great work by our dedicated Jervis Bay volunteers.
14.01.2022 Boaters need to exercise extreme caution if they are thinking of heading out on the water in coming days. Heavy rain continues to fall on the North Coast and the Illawarra is also being drenched this morning. Flood debris - such as this vegetation being torn from the dunes behind Byron Bay's iconic beach - will pose a serious navigation hazard to boats, particularly when submerged.... Navigation markers may have been dislodged on coastal waters and channels and sand banks may have changed so a careful watch is required. The hazardous Nambucca bar requires skippers to exercise caution at the best of times but was being belted by a large swell yesterday afternoon. Remember the boating rule: if in doubt, don't go out. If you do go out, ensure you Log On with Marine Rescue NSW via VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue App and that everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket. Photos: Marine Rescue Cape Byron Unit Commander Terry Sandon and Marine Rescue Nambucca Unit Commander Gary Nichols.
14.01.2022 Four men have been returned safely to shore after their boat sank 20 nautical miles off Sydney Heads this morning in an emergency that demonstrated the safety value of VHF marine radio. The boaters a father and son and two mates - had been on a fishing trip when one of their 8m boat’s engines stopped. When they went to investigate, they found the engine bay rapidly filling with water. The men began bailing but realising they couldn’t keep up with the inflow, made a Mayday c...all on VHF Channel 16 as the boat overturned and sank swiftly beneath them. They had no time to grab any of their belongings on board. A boater who was 6nm away heard the Mayday call and relayed the details to Marine Rescue Terrey Hills, before heading to the latitude and longitude the men had broadcast and retrieving them from the water. A crew from Marine Rescue Middle Harbour was quickly under way on board rescue vessel Middle Harbour 30 in response to the Mayday just after 11am, along with a Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force vessel. MR Middle Harbour Deputy Unit Commander Ben Crowther, Bill Keleher, Mick Stott, Altan Kececi and Ron Van Leer were on board MH 30, with Dean Mills providing communications support at the unit’s base at The Spit. DUC Crowther said conditions had been unpleasant: a 1.5-2m swell and choppy between the swell. He said on arrival at the scene, the police had determined the conditions were not suitable to transfer the four men from the recreational boat, which had then returned them to shore. The crew of Middle Harbour 30 remained on location to calculate the drift of the sunken boat so MR Terrey Hills could broadcast Securite warnings to alert other boaters in the vicinity to keep watch for the navigational hazard, before returning through the Heads about 3pm. Discovering the four men had been delivered to the Middle Harbour Yacht Club, near the Middle Harbour base, the crew then located the men and ferried them back to the Roseville boat ramp, returning to base just before 4.30pm. MRNSW Greater Sydney Regional Operations Manager Glenn Evans thanked the boater who had gone to the men’s rescue. This emergency highlights the safety benefits of VHF marine radio, he said. We always encourage boaters to leave their radio on VHF Channel 16 so if a boater nearby is in trouble and calls for help, they can go to their aid while rescue crews are on the way. The men on board the sinking boat did the right thing to maximise their chances of being rescued they made a Mayday call on VHF 16 and gave their accurate coordinates so not only the emergency services but also the Good Samaritan boater knew where to locate them. He said the MR Middle Harbour crew had responded rapidly and their skill in calculating the drift of the overturned boat in the current had helped keep other boaters safe. Add to Your Post
13.01.2022 A large sailing catamaran made a Mayday call when it lost power and steering as it was crossing the Tweed bar in rough conditions this morning. The 38 foot catamaran, with two people on board, was hit by two large waves, which spun it around and washed it back into the river. The skipper managed to anchor close to the southern wall of the bar, with a crew from Marine Rescue Point Danger and a Police vessel quickly on the scene.... The catamaran was manoeuvred to safety at the pump out jetty in Boyds Bay. The Mayday call was answered by Point Danger radio operator John Bullock, with additional communications support from Graham Challender. The crew on rescue vessel Point Danger 30 was Glen Hatton, Christopher Quinn and Keith Smith.

12.01.2022 JET SKI NEAR MISS FORSTER Marine Rescue Forster Tuncurry have stood down after two persons, male and female, who were swept out to sea after falling from their jet ski near the mouth of the Coolongolook River at Forster on the Mid North Coast, were able to recover and safely reach a local beach. The two persons, who were wearing life jackets, were swept 250 metres offshore in rough conditions. The driver of the jet ski was able to eventually reach it, restart it, and collect ...his female passenger. She was unable to climb aboard and had to be towed to shore. The incident is a reminder that conditions are still hazardous on the NSW Mid and Far North Coasts and that water activities should be postponed until conditions have eased. It is also a reminder of the importance of wearing a life jacket (mandatory for jet ski users) - in this case they possibly saved two lives.

10.01.2022 Boaters have been encouraged to ensure they're ready for the summer. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos and Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell this morning this morning joined Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott and other senior members of the emergency services to deliver important summer safety advice to the community. Volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Jackson and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour also attended on board rescue vessels Port Jackson 20 an...d Middle Harbour 30. Mr Elliott urged boaters to Log On and Log Off with MRNSW when heading out on the water and to ensure everyone on board was wearing a lifejacket. Residents were also reminded to prepare their bushfire survival plan, not to drive through floodwater, to swim between the flags and make sure their home was fire safe this summer. Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic. Last year, we had a horror bushfire season. This year, we’re expecting a wet and wild summer. But bushfires and storms are not the only threats we face, Mr Elliott said. I urge you to use the start of summer as a start of a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for seasonal hazards. Especially this year, as experts warn of a La Niña summer. Commissioner Tannos said the service's volunteers were ready for a record summer on the water as more people stayed home instead of heading overseas on holidays. Boaters should always Log On with Marine Rescue when heading out and Log Off when they return on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return, he said. Find out more about the steps you can take to Get Ready for summer at https://resilience.nsw.gov.au/prepare.html

10.01.2022 The training our volunteers undertake means they are always ready for the unexpected - even when they are training! For Marine Rescue Point Danger unit the day started with Point Danger 20 undertaking offshore search and rescue training, with trainee Keith Smith generating a sector search, and recently accredited crew member Gavin Bond at the helm. A north-westerly wind, plenty of white caps, a two knot current and north-easterly swell provided ideal conditions for navigatio...n training and understanding the impact of conditions on steerage. Good communication and regular adjustments to the prevailing conditions resulted in a successful outcome and was followed by an on-water debrief, in which the vessels drift vector in the conditions was calculated. On return to the river an emergency call came through tasking Point Danger 20 to assist a jet ski with mechanical failure located 15 nautical miles up the Tweed River. This provided an opportunity for the crew to test their navigational awareness and risk assessment as they navigated the upper estuarine reaches of the Tweed River as far as the weir. The stricken jet ski was quickly located and towed back to Tweed Heads. Great work by the Point Danger team! Photos: location of jet ski near weir, search and rescue training pattern, jet ski under tow with Mount Warning in the background

09.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW Senior Chaplain, Reverend Richard Wrightson, has today been made a Life Member of the organisation. Rev Wrightson is a volunteer with Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie. Hunter/Central Coast Regional Director Jim Wright presented Rev Wrightson with his Life Membership at the official opening of the unit's new $1.8 million Search and Rescue Coordination Centre this morning.... Mr Wright said Rev Wrightson was worthy of the service’s highest honour, awarded in recognition of his sustained and valuable contribution, both operationally and in his chaplaincy role. We extend our thanks to Rev Wrightson for his lengthy service as a crew member and watch officer but perhaps more importantly, for his contribution to the pastoral care of our members and their families, particularly during times of tragedy, he said. He has extended great compassion and care to his fellow members, not only those who have lost their own loved ones but also those who have taken part in traumatic and troubling operations, available at all hours to provide careful counsel and support. I know each individual is grateful to him for this. Rev Wrightson, who is soon to retire as Chaplain, was one of the founding chaplains to officiate at the annual Emergency Services Volunteers Memorial Service, taking part in his last service in October this year.
