15.01.2022 A busy day on Jervis Bay today. First call of the day was a five metre runabout that had engine issues and needed to get back to Callala Bay, the second job for the day was an eight and half metre catamaran that lost its engine and struggled to manoeuvre onto a mooring. Add to this a couple of jet skis that required assistance and it added up to pretty full day.

14.01.2022 VHF is the technology of choice for safer boating. It gives you greater range, better reception and is less susceptible to static and interference than the olde...r technology of 27MHz. If you need help on the water, call Marine Rescue NSW on the international distress channel - VHF Channel 16. We're listening around the clock. Not only will we hear you but so will nearby boaters, who might be able to provide immediate assistance while a rescue crew is on the way. VHF - make the switch today.

12.01.2022 At around 630am on December 2nd, Marine Rescue Jervis Bay vessel JB 40 was tasked to rescue the occupant of a 5.5 metre vessel aground on rocks at Dart Point near the entrance to Jervis Bay. Hidden by an unusually high tide, the vessel had become grounded when trying to cross a submerged reef. The sole occupant reported they were safe, in no imminent danger, were wearing a life jacket with EPIRB at the ready and had anchored the vessel to stop it being dragged further over th...e rocks. On arrival, the crew of John Gallimore, Brian McParlane, Daniel Pauperis determined that dragging the vessel off the rocks would likely result in further damage. The occupant of the vessel made their way to a nearby beach where they were assisted by Naval vessel ‘Sycamore’. As JB 40 could no longer provide emergency assistance, the vessel was left to be salvaged. The incident is a reminder of carefully planning your journey including knowing how to correctly read maritime charts, and to take into account the effects of higher than normal tides in covering normally visible hazards.

10.01.2022 This afternoon (Sunday 8/11), at 3:30pm, we received notification from Bruce Mitchell (Illawarra Regional Operations Manager) of a person in the water at Moes Rock off Cape St George. JB40 was patrolling the Southern end of Jervis Bay and was immediately tasked and made full speed towards Jervis Bay heads and out to open waters towards the target area. JB40 arrived on the scene within twenty minutes and was met by two helicopters that had also been tasked to the incident. ...A search pattern was immediately started by JB40 from the location details provided. Shortly after initiating the search pattern, one of the helicopters located the person in the water and proceeded to perform a rescue, they were then lifted out of the water. A great example of multi-agency cooperation. Marine Rescue provided an important component for ensuring two separate search areas could be covered at the same time, and although the person was located outside our designated search area, we were still able to make a major contribution to the overall effort. The pictures shows one of the rescue helicopters sweeping past JB40 on their way to Moes Rock. JB 40 was skippered by Greg Atkinson and ably supported by crew: John Dawson, Mike Bardon, Craig Marsh and Ernie Panucci.

05.01.2022 BOATING SAFETY ALERT The issue with VHF marine radio interference along the Illawarra coastline has been resolved. A radio had been transmitting for more than 2...0 hours, potentially preventing Marine Rescue NSW bases at Port Kembla, Shoalhaven, Jervis Bay, Sussex Inlet and Ulladulla from hearing distress calls. The source was successfully located on land late this afternoon. Tracking down a signal on land with a vessel-based Radio Direction Finder is challenging, as this makes triangulation more difficult. Thank you to the Illawarra media and boaters who cooperated with our public appeal to check their boats’ radios.

SROCP (short range operator certificate of proficiency) is the same as above but focuses on VHF radio's and not MF/HF. Our course will cover both LROCP & SROCP material, it is up to you which exam you choose to sit. COURSE DELIVERY: Will be via zoom on the evenings of 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th of March. 02.01.2022 BOATING SAFETY ALERT Boaters in the Jervis Bay area have been asked to double-check that their VHF radios are switched off as a matter of urgency. A boat’s radio has been left on since early yesterday evening, meaning it has been transmitting non-stop for about the past 20 hours, which is interfering with VHF marine radio transmissions along the Illawarra coastline from Port Kembla to Ulladulla. ... This is a public safety issue for boaters on these waters as the interference may mean radio operators at the Marine Rescue Jervis Bay radio base cannot hear distress calls or other contacts from other boaters. This is particularly problematic if the boat with the radio switched on is sitting between the radio base and another boat in trouble. Boaters are urged to check their radios as soon as possible.

02.01.2022 Marine Rescue Jervis Bay conducted an emergency response exercise over the weekend to ensure we're rescue-ready for the peak boating season. A crew from WIN TV was on board to capture the action.
