20.01.2022 The Marine Rescue NSW Search and Rescue Exercise is continuing at Bermagui today. Volunteers from Marine Rescue Batemans Bay, Marine Rescue Tuross, Marine Rescu...e Bermagui, Marine Rescue Merimbula, Marine Rescue Eden, Marine Rescue Moama and Marine Rescue Narooma this morning held a debrief of yesterday's search exercise. This is an important component of a SAREX, identifying what participants learned about responding together with numerous search assets on the water and in the air, what worked well and what they might do differently next time. Director Operations Andrew Cribb thanked all participants for giving up their weekend. He congratulated everyone on their constructive approach, particularly applauding the efforts of rescue vessel crews during yesterday's search, who set a new search pattern for the last sweep of the day in just four minutes. Today's program also includes learning more about the operations and capability of our partners from Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force, Australian Maritime Safety Authority - AMSA, Surf Life Saving NSW and Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopters.

19.01.2022 Tuross Marine Rescue hosted a heart-warming medal ceremony today. The awards were given by Monaro Regional Operations Manager Glenn Sullivan, looking very dappe...r in full dress uniform. Glenn made an excellent speech highlighting Marine Rescue’s appreciation of Mike Byron’s decades of service to the Australian community both as an active member of the Rural Fire Service and of Marine Rescue, as he presented Mike with a 15 years’ service National Medal. Mike said he really appreciated receiving the recognition, particularly as sometimes the outcomes of the emergencies he attended weighed heavily. Glenn also highlighted MR Tuross’ positive contribution, and made all unit members feel appreciated. Five of our members, UC Alan Blessington, DUC Paul Carter, Wayne Ellison, Greg Krywiel and Blaise Madden, received a NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation, as well as a peaked cap featuring the state’s floral emblem, the Waratah. Not only did MR Tuross send in volunteers to help, it was interesting to learn that it was the MR Tuross generator that powered the Narooma Club which gave sanctuary to so many, making us reflect on the many small contributions, which together created the fabulous community response to the fire crisis.

18.01.2022 Marine Rescue and other specialists from the NSW Far South Coast are arriving in the town of Bermagui this afternoon, ready to take to the waters off the seasi...de community tomorrow to search for victims missing at sea as part of a major capability exercise. The search is the focus of a two-day regional Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) designed to test agencies’ marine search and rescue practices and coordination. MRNSW Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell said more than 80 volunteers from seven MRNSW units would be among more than 100 specialists taking part in the first of the 2021 SAREX series. Members of the Bermagui, Batemans Bay, Tuross, Narooma, Merimbula, Eden and Alpine Lakes units will take part, along with personnel from the NSW Police Force Marine Area Command, Australia Maritime Safety Authority, Westpac Helicopter and Surf Life Saving NSW. These exercises are staged along the coastline each year to hone marine rescue search and rescue skills and cooperation between agencies to ensure we can all operate seamlessly in an emergency, Deputy Commissioner Barrell said. This weekend’s event is a major component of our ongoing professional training program for our volunteers in this busy boating region. Our volunteers are trained to the highest standards for their roles and the on-water experience they gain from a SAREX helps keep them rescue-ready around the clock. The search exercise is based on a scenario in which a plane crashes offshore from Bermagui, with the rescue crews challenged to locate the wreckage and search for survivors and victims. The search starts about 8.30am on Saturday, with rescue vessels from the Marine Rescue Bermagui, Narooma, Merimbula and Batemans Bay units and a NSW Police vessel heading offshore from the harbour. Rescue Water Craft from Marine Rescue Tuross and Surf Life Saving jet skis will search close to the shoreline. Lifesaver which helicopter will drop search mannequins as targets. Volunteers from all seven units will be undertaking incident management exercises on shore. Deputy Commissioner Barrell said the SAREX series helped strengthen joint agency capability. This is essential to ensure that we have the best possible chance of finding and rescuing someone in the water as soon as possible in an emergency, when time is always of the essence, he said.

13.01.2022 Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott today announced a new $1.4 million operations centre for Marine Rescue NSW volunteers who help keep boaters... safe on Sydney’s iconic harbour. Mr Elliott joined Member for North Sydney Felicity Wilson, Mosman Mayor Cr Carolyn Corrigan, Marine Rescue NSW Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell and volunteers to inspect the plans for the new Marine Rescue Middle Harbour base, at The Spit. Ensuring these volunteers have the purpose-designed facilities and resources to support their vital work will improve boating safety on the harbour, Mr Elliott said. Sydney Harbour is the busiest waterway in the country, with thousands of commercial, passenger, sporting and recreational vessels out every day, along with ever-increasing numbers of paddleboards, kayaks and similar craft. The professionally trained and equipped volunteers at Marine Rescue Middle Harbour and the neighbouring Port Jackson unit are ready 24/7 to respond to boaters in trouble. In the past 18 months, Middle Harbour crews have launched more than 220 rescues, including over 20 in response to life-endangering emergencies, returning 600-plus boaters safely to shore. The NSW Government is proud to support our emergency services volunteers. We have invested $37.6 million to provide Marine Rescue members with modern facilities, 38 new rescue vessels and improved marine radio infrastructure. The new building will be an airy, light-filled construction with views over the busy surrounding waters through floor to ceiling windows. It will include dedicated training, meeting and store rooms, offices, a communications area, a crew ready room, lockers, bathrooms and kitchen. Ms Wilson said the modern base would ensure the volunteers had the facilities to plan and coordinate their operations to respond to emergencies and support the annual big events on the Harbour, as well as their training activities to keep crews rescue-ready. The existing building has been home for more than four decades to the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Marine Rescue Middle Harbour and for a time, the MRNSW Headquarters. In fact, in years gone by, volunteers would sleep upstairs during weekend shifts, she said. The age and advanced deterioration of the building now means it needs to be replaced and I am pleased the NSW Government has been able to invest the funding to ensure our volunteers have the facilities they deserve and need. Deputy Commissioner Barrell said the construction of the new building was only possible thanks to the State Government’s $37.6 million support for the organisation’s volunteers and life-saving work. For the first time, we are able to ensure more of our volunteers have fit-for-purpose facilities to plan and coordinate their operations, he said. Discussions about the plans are currently under way with Mosman Council. Work is expected to begin in mid-2021. Photos: Existing 1963 building Dignitaries with the plans Architect's concept diagrams

07.01.2022 Boaters have been encouraged to ensure they're ready for the summer. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos and Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell this morn...ing this morning joined Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott and other senior members of the emergency services to deliver important summer safety advice to the community. Volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Jackson and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour also attended on board rescue vessels Port Jackson 20 and Middle Harbour 30. Mr Elliott urged boaters to Log On and Log Off with MRNSW when heading out on the water and to ensure everyone on board was wearing a lifejacket. Residents were also reminded to prepare their bushfire survival plan, not to drive through floodwater, to swim between the flags and make sure their home was fire safe this summer. Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic. Last year, we had a horror bushfire season. This year, we’re expecting a wet and wild summer. But bushfires and storms are not the only threats we face, Mr Elliott said. I urge you to use the start of summer as a start of a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for seasonal hazards. Especially this year, as experts warn of a La Niña summer. Commissioner Tannos said the service's volunteers were ready for a record summer on the water as more people stayed home instead of heading overseas on holidays. Boaters should always Log On with Marine Rescue when heading out and Log Off when they return on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return, he said. Find out more about the steps you can take to Get Ready for summer at https://resilience.nsw.gov.au/prepare.html
