09.01.2022 Tuesday Trivia Grace Horsley Darling, an English lighthouse keeper's daughter, was born November 24, 1815 in Bamburgh, Northumberland, and grew up in the various lighthouses of which her father was keeper. Grace gained heroine status early in the morning of 7 September 1838, when the steamship Forfarshire ran ashore and broke in two on the rocks by the lighthouse situated in the North Sea. Grace and her father rowed out in difficult, stormy conditions to the stricken steamship: her actions saved the lives of nine people - four crew and five passengers. Tragically, forty other people died in the accident. Grace never married, dying of tuberculosis in 1842. The parish church at Bamburgh contains a memorial in her honour.

02.01.2022 S.T.o.W. Dangerous Cold Water Safety Warm air doesn’t always mean warm water. Survival time is greatly diminished in water below 21 deg C. (16-21 deg: 2-7 hrs before loss of consciousness; 2-40 hrs survival time) Cold water drains body heat up to 25 times faster than cold air. When cold water makes contact with your skin, cold shock causes an immediate loss of breathing control. This dramatically increases the risk of sudden drowning even if the water is calm and you know how to swim. The danger is even greater if the water is rough. Immersion in cold water is immediately life-threatening for anyone not wearing thermal protection, like a wetsuit or drysuit, and not wearing a life jacket.
