25.01.2022 Skipper Juergen becomes an Aussie on Australia Day On Australia Day 2020 we attended the Port Douglas Community Centre to support Skipper Juergen on his naturalisation Juergen made a very touching speech - something along the lines of "I have lived in Australia for 25 years and my colleagues at Marine Rescue finally told me that if I didnt become an Aussie they would kick me out!"... Some doubt the veracity of this claim - but a good time was had by all.. After the ceremony Marilyn presented Juergen with some genuine Aussie gifts to commemorate the occasion Well done Aussie Juergen. Pics are 1. Juergen receiving his certificate from Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu and 2. 24.01.2022 At around 1000 we received a call from Cairns Coast Guard about a 38 ft vessel broken down at Mackay Reef - about 50km from Port Douglas It took about 30 minutes to assemble a crew as many people were committed and quite a few injured! But after 30 minutes Colin, Shaun and Fred were ready to go and heading out of Dickson Inlet.... This is quite a long tow for us - about 50 km. Its quick to get there in the RV Port Douglas - but with a boat this size in tow we can only do about 15 kmph on the return journey. With the rain bucketing down the team returned home at around 1600 and secured the tow at the Port Douglas Yacht Club. Well done Col, Shaun and Fred! 20.01.2022 Callout toward Snapper 0800 18 April 2020 We received a call around 0800 of a 4.3m fishing tinny broken down out of Cooya heading to Low. A team was assembled and we were on our way at 0830. It was a magnicent boating day in paradise! ... The car park at the boat ramp was full of trailers as locals enjoyed the break from lockdown The seas were calm and the trip out and back was brisk - 60kph out and 40kph back - the whole exercise took about an hour to return the vessel to the Dickson Inlet boat ramp. 08.01.2022 We were out on a training exercise with some of our Mossman State High School (MSHS) students and got to see a spectacular front rolling over Port Douglas with lightning and thunder. One of our students took some snaps from the front of the boat when we were heading back into Port. Our expanded MSHS program is in its 5th week - with 14 enthusiastic members undertaking a Coxswain training program every Friday throughout this year Join Marine Rescue Port Douglas at https://www.marinerescueportdouglas.com.au/1/join-mariners/
07.01.2022 Callout 1000 14 June 2020 A callout to the far side of Tongue took a while to locate as the owner had trouble giving us accurate coordinates.. some suggestions were past the outer reef! Anyway with the assistance of Cairns Coast Guard radio room, we eventually located them and brought them safely home.... With a bit of whale watching enroute (look closely at the centre of the video) Thanks to all for another great effort.. 07.01.2022 At 1430 The RV Port Douglas was in the yard finalising an engine service and some repairs to the front tubes when we got a call of a Mayday from Cairns Coast Guard (VMR409) for a 46ft yacht with engine failure just off Island Point and drifting towards the rocks. Fortunately the owner manage to secure the vessel with an anchor and so the call reverted to an assist. We were just about done with the repairs - and so we relaunched and went to assist.... MRPD member Col climbed aboard the vessel to help the owner secure the tow and raise the anchor. What a guy! We towed them into the Crystalbrook Marina and they set about fixing their fuel problem. The owner was a member of the Port Douglas Yacht Club and so there was no charge for the assistance. As you can see - this was a bit slower tow that some of our recent planing hull efforts! 02.01.2022 First tow in skippering for Mossman High student Floyd During a training session on Thu 16 Jan 2020 a phone call was received from the Cairns Water Police asking us to attend to a broken down vessel near Oyster Reef and tow it into Yorkeys Knob. Steve, Col and Floyd left at 1100, completed the task and had the RV Port Douglas refueled and moored by 1530. ... The weather was kind with a light nor-easterly. It was a milestone for Floyd, being the first time he participated in a rescue as a fully fledged Competent Crew and he skippered the tow home as can be seen in the video. 02.01.2022 Batt call out 1630 Friday 27 March 2020 At 1600 we received a call from the Cairns Water Police about an 8m vessel broken down southwest of Batt Reef. A quick ring around saw 3 GHD originals (Terry, Shaun and Ross) heading into a 2m chop at around 1630.... The ride out was directly into the chop and quite bumpy. The vessel took a while to locate as it had dragged its anchor and drifted a couple of miles before we got there. The trip back to Port with the vessel in tow was more comfortable as we were rolling with the weather. 01.01.2022 The mighty Mossie returns to service! The RV Mossman was commissioned 20 years ago and operated for many years as Marine Rescue Port Douglas (MRPD) primary vessel. It has been refurbished and is returning to service. The refurb was undertaken by BME NQ PL in Cairns https://bmenq.com.au/ and the signage was generously donated by Mickey Ink Marine https://www.facebook.com/MickeyInkMarine... MRPD President Ross Wood said, The RV Mossman is our second vessel and complements the larger RV Port Douglas. It provides great flexibility in Dickson Inlet and will be a valuable addition to our Mossman State High School Coxswain training program. "MRPD now has two fully functional rescue vessels and a strong team of volunteers ready to support the community in these difficult times", he added. Volunteer Marine Rescue has been designated a Essential Service by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services The video shows volunteers taking the refurbished Mossie for a sea trial on March 25 2020.
