13.01.2022 Marine Rescue Shellharbour hopes everyone enjoyed the long weekend but strong winds are still being forecasted so please be careful

12.01.2022 Crews from Marine Rescue Port Kembla and Marine Rescue Shellharbour are deploying to search for a possible missing person in the water after an unattended kayak... was located at Honeycomb Rocks at Port Kembla. Rescue vessels Port Kembla 30 and Shellharbour 30 are joining the Port Kembla Water Police to search the area, which is beneath the Port Kembla unit's HIll 60 radio base. It is understood no one has been reported missing at this stage and the kayak could have been blown into the water by yesterday afternoon's southerly buster.

12.01.2022 WEAR IT Safe boating means wearing a life jacket - the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. 11.01.2022 BOATING SAFETY ALERT The issue with VHF marine radio interference along the Illawarra coastline has been resolved. A radio had been transmitting for more than 2...0 hours, potentially preventing Marine Rescue NSW bases at Port Kembla, Shoalhaven, Jervis Bay, Sussex Inlet and Ulladulla from hearing distress calls. The source was successfully located on land late this afternoon. Tracking down a signal on land with a vessel-based Radio Direction Finder is challenging, as this makes triangulation more difficult. Thank you to the Illawarra media and boaters who cooperated with our public appeal to check their boats’ radios.

11.01.2022 PLAN FOR SURVIVAL THIS BOATING SEASON With National Safe Boating Week and the start of the boating season upon us, there’s no better time to make sure that you and your vessel are prepared if the worst happens. For Guy Peluso and partner Colleen, their sailing trip down the northern New South Wales coast became a dramatic struggle for survival. They were saved not just by the exceptional efforts of the emergency services who responded to their distress call, but by their own...Continue reading

10.01.2022 BOATING SAFETY ALERT Boaters in the Shellharbour area have been asked to double-check that their VHF radios are switched off as a matter of urgency. A boat’s radio has been left on since early yesterday evening, meaning it has been transmitting non-stop for about the past 20 hours, which is interfering with VHF marine radio transmissions along the Illawarra coastline from Port Kembla to Ulladulla. ... This is a public safety issue for boaters on these waters as the interference may mean radio operators at the Marine Rescue Port Kembla Hill 60 radio base cannot hear distress calls or other contacts from other boaters. This is particularly problematic if the boat with the radio switched on is sitting between the radio base and another boat in trouble. Boaters are urged to check their radios as soon as possible.

10.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW has appealed to boaters along the NSW coastline to stay off the water this weekend. Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell said conditions in many a...reas along the coastline were not safe to head out on boats, jet skis or other craft such as kayaks or canoes. We really do urge boaters to stay off the water until conditions clear, he said. There will be huge amounts of debris in the water, both floating and submerged, such as large trees and dead animals, caravans and garden sheds. You don’t want to be hitting anything like that. Not only is it going to damage your boat but a collision can easily fling those on board into the murky and polluted water, risking their lives and their health. Channel markers and other navigational aids will have been washed away or displaced in floodwaters and channels and sandbanks can have completely changed shape since the last time you went out. Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour is warning local boaters of a build-up of sand outside of the boat ramp mouth that is causing boats to bottom out or catch their props as they head out or return. On Thursday night, a crew from Iluka Yamba deployed to save a solo sailor on a yacht with engine failure who was trying to cross the bar into the Clarence River under sail but kept being pushed back out to sea by the murky floodwaters pouring downstream, Deputy Commissioner Barrell said. He thanked MRNSW volunteers who had been working since late last week to support flood operations, many in areas far from home. They have evacuated residents and their pets, filled sandbags, conducted welfare checks and in one case, ensured an elderly woman received food and other essential supplies after rescuing her son and a mate from a tree after they got stuck trying to reach her in a kayak on the flooded Manning River, he said. We thank them all for the commitment to serving the community, whenever and wherever they are called upon. Photo by Sam Hennigan via @9NewsAUS
