25.01.2022 Hay Point Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) operator Warren Bath won the Australian Vessel Traffic Service Award last year for his coordination of an incident involv...ing a bulk carrier that had drifted off the berth in the middle of the night. The award recognises an outstanding contribution by a VTS beyond their normal operational scope. 25.01.2022 Another new rescue vessel has officially joined the Marine Rescue NSW fleet today, with the commissioning of the $613,000 Broken Bay 30. Police and Emergency Se...rvices Minister David Elliott, Planning and Public Spaces Minister, Pittwater MP Rob Stokes, and Federal Member for Mackellar Jason Falinski joined volunteers of Marine Rescue Broken Bay for the vessel commissioning and naming ceremony at the Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay. MRNSW Directors, Commissioner Stacey Tannos, Deputy Commissioner Alex Barrell and representatives of neighbouring units also were on hand. Mr Elliott said the NSW Government had provided MRNSW with a record budget, the largest investment it had ever made in the organisation. "I make no apology for that. It creates a unique opportunity for a new generation of facilities, equipment and capability," he said. "This will be an extremely busy summer as Australians try to enjoy our own backyards and staycations. There will be more pressure on our waterways and more pressure on you. Australians are reassured you're out there." He said the modern new vessel was a significant investment in boating safety on Sydney's busy northern waterways. Mr Stokes said it was in many ways a historic day, recognising where MRNSW had come from and where it was going. He recalled the time when the Krait - famous for the Z Force raid on shipping in Singapore Harbour during World War II - had been the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol flagship on local waters. Mr Stokes announced a $100,000 Community Building Partnerships grant towards a replacement for the current Broken Bay unit base at Rowland Reserve, ensuring the unit would have the capability to continue providing the service on which the boating community depended. Commissioner Stacey Tannos thanked the State Government for its support, with its $37.6 million investment enabling the service to provide its volunteers with state of the art vessels and facilities. "It was a game changer for our organisation. It was recognition by the government of how proud they are of the work of our volunteers," he said. He said Broken Bay 30, a 10 metre Naiad, was the 103rd boat delivered to MRNSW volunteer units over the past decade. "We take great pride in building all our boats in NSW, supporting regional jobs and the regional industry," he said. Unit Commander Jimmy Arteaga announced the vessel would be named after long-time member Michael Seale, who had committed 30,880 days or 38 years' service to MRNSW and the RVCP. He said the naming was richly deserved, recognising Mr Seale's record of service and input in many roles, including as a vessel Master, a Director and Chair of the RVCP, his involvement in the purchase of the unit's vessels, a Director on the initial Board and Fleet Committee of MRNSW, Deputy Unit Commander and Administraion Officer. Mr Seale said he was both surprised and honoured by the naming. The First Bayview Sea Scouts also attended the ceremony, performing the national anthem and later getting a tour of the new boat.

24.01.2022 Congratulations to Vic Lawrence for attaining his 15 year service medal with the Broken Bay unit. Regional Operations Manager Glenn Evans was on hand to present Vic with his medal. Thankyou for your service to the community.

16.01.2022 Bring out your expired flares for safe, easy disposal; Boaters across NSW will again be able to dispose of their expired flares safely and easily with 46 collection points launching this month. This year, the NSW Maritime collection program will increase from two to three stages, with mobile collections up and down the NSW coast from 20 to 30 November, 8 to 17 January next year and 1 to 18 April. ... Expired flares are classified as Class 1 explosives under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and require authorised disposal, NSW Maritime Executive Director Mark Hutchings said. Flares are to be used when you’re in trouble. They provide an exact location for searching aircraft or vessels and they are only to be lit when rescuers are in view, he said. Most flares have a use-by date of three years and they must be replaced before the expiry date, with penalties applicable for those found to be using or carrying expired flares. This collection program provides the boating community with an opportunity to safely dispose of their out of date flares, particularly as flare collection is not permitted at Service Centres, Registries or Maritime sites. Mr Hutchings said flares were an important component of required safety equipment. NSW Maritime Boating Education Officers will be available to assist boaters at some of the flare collection points, with advice on flares and other safety equipment such as life jacket servicing and to answer any questions about boating safety rules. NSW Maritime expired flare collections will be provided from Monday 20 November to Monday 30 November with locations listed in image attachments. For more information on the expired flares program or to look up a location near you, visit https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//safety-equ/flare-disposal.html

Elections were this year due to be ...held for the positions of Greater Sydney, Illawarra and Monaro Regional Directors and a General Director. Two nominations were received for the General Director’s position, with Pat Fayers returned for a three-year term. The other candidate was former MR Ballina Deputy Unit Commander Phil Causley. Today’s AGM was held at State Headquarters and also via Zoom. It was the first to be live streamed on YouTube in a measure that supported the organisation’s COVID-19 social distancing requirements and encouraged greater volunteer engagement. Chair Jim Glissan, attending via Zoom, said this was an unusual AGM in the most unusual year any of us have ever experienced.
