05.01.2022 Vitamin D Today is Vitamin D Awareness Day! Vitamin Ds main role is to maintain calcium levels in the blood to maintain a wide variety of functions in the body, including bone health. A large number of studies published in 2007 suggest that the vitamin may play a role in the prevention and treatment of a wide range of other conditions diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer, falls, asthma, epilepsy, pre-menstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, hypert...ension, and lipid levels. Vitamin D is produced in skin in response to ultraviolet light (UVB) and heat. Production of vitamin D depends on skin pigmentation, those with darker skin, both natural and caused by tanning are at risk of deficiency. Sunscreens and glass block UVB and vitamin D production. Nearly 1 in 3 Australians are now vitamin D deficient. Risk of deficiency increases with age and is more common in women. Australians are twice as likely to be vitamin D deficiency in winter when sunlight exposure decreases. Being overworked and too busy is the biggest reason most Australians dont get the recommend amount of sun exposure during the day. Nearly a third of the workforce regularly skips lunch or eats at their desk due to work pressure. Supplementation is often the simplest and most effective way of obtaining adequate vitamin D. There are many commercially available forms of vitamin D available at pharmacies and supermarkets. Generally the maximum dose available over the counter is 1,000iu. While this may be adequate for vitamin D level maintenance in those with levels in the normal range, larger doses may be needed where there is a deficiency. At Marion Compounding Pharmacy we can make up vitamin D in any sized dose that your doctor may order. Speak with your GP about taking a vitamin D test if you feel that you may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency.
