25.01.2022 Acknowledging the gift of a father, or a father figure, is the invitation of today. In Australia, we mark our gratitude in a special way for all of our fathers. The intimacy of Jesus’ tender address for God, as Abba, is a reminder of that everlasting and unique love that we glimpse in our own parents. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray for all people we name as fathers. May this prayer provide additional words to the intentio...ns of your heart. #sundaysignificance #fathersday #fathers #abbafather #maristlife #marist #fatherslove

23.01.2022 On this day, April 18, 1999, Marcellin Champagnat was formally canonised, recognised as a Saint in the Catholic Church. For Marists, the life of Marcellin was already remarkable and inspirational. Sainthood is, for many, the confirmation of the extraordinary nature of a person who created a movement that spans countries, communities and people for over 200 years. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with St Marcellin, seeking h...is intercession and guidance in your life. For Marists, it may take the form of being one heart and mind in the mission to make Jesus Christ known and loved. May you be a presence of goodness and light in the lives of people around you. #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #stmarcellin #champagnat #marists #communionofsaints

23.01.2022 The feast days of All Saints and All Souls offer two distinctive reflections. One recalls the titled believers of Jesus who call us to our best selves and to the promise of humanity. The other recalls those people who have been our personal experiences of wisdom figures, the embodiment of hope, and agents of love in our lives and have gone before us in death. Honouring their legacies and examples is important. When we feel isolated and alone, it is hard to remember that we a...re in communion. We are part of a community of believers across time and geography that are united in prayer, faith and love. These are the saints of the church: all people gathered in the name of Jesus building the Kingdom of God in our relationships, our witness and our faithfulness. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with the Saints and the saints, joining with their voices of praise, intercession and gratitude. May we continue to learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love. Bless their memories. #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #allsaints #allsouls #saints #walkinlove

22.01.2022 Whenever I see the word ‘Nativity,’ my heart beats a little faster with the idea of Christmas inching its way closer. Today’s nativity, however, marks the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The Church has celebrated the birth of Mary since the sixth century C.E. We rejoice with Anne and Joachim, her parents, as they received a child who plays her part in humanity’s ongoing journey to fullness of life with God. #mary #nativity #nativityofmary #maristlife #feastday

21.01.2022 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 The selfless and generous gift of service is one of the deepest and richest calls in our Christian tradition. Jesus witnessed, and challenged others, to the fullest sense of service. For Marcellin Champagnat, it was to be found in loving presence with young people and community, inspired by the example of the first Christians. In other spaces, whether serving one’s country or one’s commu...nity, these acts of love, solidarity and justice give witness to the best of our common humanity. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with the call to serve others in your life. How are you in relationship with your neighbours, especially those in need? What does the call to serve look like for you? Whose presence and help are you grateful for? #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #service #calltoserve #jesus #love #community

19.01.2022 The struggle with suffering and death is universal. Our newsfeeds and screens are full of stories of people hurt, in pain and dying. Mary understands this suffering. This day, September 15, marks her as Our Lady of Sorrows. Her response, however, is one of solidarity. She stands with all people who mourn, cry, suffer and grieve. She proclaims hope while standing in the reality of people’s lives. She stayed at the foot of the cross, when others ran away. On this day, may we ...also stand with those who suffer and are marginalised, weep and listen to others’ pain, and stay. #mary #ourladyofsorrows #solidarity #maristlife #stay

17.01.2022 God did not want the resources of this world to benefit only a few. No, God didn’t want this. We must learn to share in order to grow together without leaving anyone out. 14.01.2022 As Marists, days that honour Mary hold particular importance. August 15 marks the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary. The occasion marks the long-standing tradition that Mary entered the full experience of the divine with her body and soul at the end of her life. This mysterious gift of God to Mary is the hope of all of us: every aspect of our lives and our humanity is desired by God, and will continue in Love’s fullness. ... May today remind you of the deep and unconditional love of God, who wants to experience us in our totality. 13.01.2022 A longstanding Marist tradition holds October 28th as a watershed moment in the life of St Marcellin Champagnat and the birth of the Marist movement that he inspired. Known as Montagne Day, its story has given heart and body to the meaning and practical reality of educating the most marginalised young people in the world. Here is an excerpt from Australian Marist Brother Frederick McMahon, from his book Strong Mind, Gentle Heart: ‘Shortly afterwards occurred an event that w...as a sign to Marcellin that his idea of founding a teaching congregation was something that had to be pursued. He had been called to a carpenter’s home in Les Palais, a hamlet beyond Le Bessat, where a youth, Jean Baptiste Montagne was dying. When he found that the lad, sixteen years of age, was ignorant of matters of the Faith, Champagnat set about the task of instructing him, after which he heard Montagne’s confession and prepared him for death. After ministering to another sick person in the neighborhood, Champagnat returned to the Montagne home, only to learn that the lad had died. As he walked the long journey back to La Valla, the young curate decided to put his plan into practice. He would ask Jean-Marie Granjon to become the first member of a community of teaching Brothers.’ #maristlife #maristbrothers #montagne #education #thedyingboy

13.01.2022 What does it take to produce good fruit? Jesus was a fan of taking ordinary parts of life and transforming them. Vine, branches, pruning and fruit. A simple process of harvesting becomes a profound question of meaning: how is your relationship with God, the ultimate loving presence, shaping everything you are?! What a question! This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with Jesus, the true vine, to remain. Remain in Jesus. Remain in... God. To bear fruit. #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #truevine #remain #prune #beargoodfruit

13.01.2022 Pope John Paul II, in Alice Springs in 1986, spoke directly to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this land: ‘You are part of Australia and Australia is part of you. And the Church herself in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others.’ NAIDOC Week is an annual week-long celebration ofAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander... history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity for us to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. This year, the week was postponed until this week, from November 8 to 15. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, opening our hearts, minds and ears to their voices into our lives. We pray in gratitude for their stewardship, culture and history over tens of thousands of years. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us all to greater reconciliation, justice, and peace. #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #alwayswasalwayswillbe #naidoc2020

12.01.2022 The Marist Brother: Mission The mission of the Marist Brother remains as relevant and urgent as ever. In Marcellin Champagnat’s time, the need to witness to young people the love of God and to provide education to the poor galvanised the first Marists. In our time, the ongoing mission to educate young people as people of faith, justice and integrity, especially with the marginalised, takes on contextual and broad forms. ... While the Marist Brothers have historically expressed ourselves as teachers, the new ways of being educators and witnesses to our discipleship of Jesus continues to call us to walk in communion with others. 11.01.2022 Transitions are hard. Our world continues to live in the ever-present tension of change. The seasons are a physical reminder of the transitional nature of life, from life to death, and new life again. And with change comes waiting: the waiting of what is to be, and the waiting of things passing. Scripture can offer solace and challenge in these spaces of transition. If helpful, you may like to use these passages in your prayer during these times: Jeremiah 29:11; Joshua 1:9;... Deuteronomy 31:8; 2 Peter 3:9; Philippians 4:6-8. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray, mindful of that ever-present tension of change, and waiting. May the ever-present presence of God be felt and experienced more generously in your prayer. #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #transition #change #waiting #God

08.01.2022 We continue to pray for the people of Lebanon. We are mindful of our Marist communities in Lebanon during this time. Our General Council, through our Superior General, Br Ernesto Sánchez Barba, expressed their wishes and prayers for the situation there: We are pleased with your attitude of support towards people who have lost their homes. You have made available the classrooms of the Marist schools in Champville in Deek-El-Mehdi, and Notre Dame de Lourdes in Jbeil, for fami...lies who, in this situation, need a roof. We are also aware of the social work and support done by the Scouts and Roadmakers, who worked together to clean up neighborhoods around the Port of Beirut, and Christian life groups (GVX), the Eucharistic movement of Youth (MEJ) and groups of youth and alumni, who collected aid for those affected by the explosion. 07.01.2022 The Catholic community in Australia marks Child Protection Sunday in 2020 on September 13-- at the conclusion of National Child Protection Week. This occasion invites people to pray for those harmed by abuse directly and indirectly. 06.01.2022 We are called to restore the Body of Christ by making mental health a key priority, acknowledging and including people living with mental ill-health within our communion and the heart of Australian society. This Sunday marks Social Justice Sunday across Australia. The Social Justice Statement 2020-21 is titled, To Live Life to the Full: Mental health in Australia today. It encourages faith communities, governments and each one of us, to make mental health a priority. ... The celebration of Social Justice Sunday is a long tradition in the Catholic Church in Australia. For almost every year since 1940, our bishops have joined together to issue a major social justice statement at this time. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with this statement, and the formal words attached to its release. 06.01.2022 Each of us is deeply and unconditionally loved by God. Out of this love, we are called to be our best and truest selves. This is our vocation. It grows out of our identity and is fostered by our choices and relationships. The gift of your vocation is that it is found in the unions of two wills: yours and God’s. You are always enough, as you also grow deeper into your loved self. These expressions of your vocation may come into fruition in your relationships status, the profes...sions you choose, in the ways you live out your discipleship, and in your daily choices. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray in a spirit of openness, listening and invitation to the callings in your life right now. 04.01.2022 One of the oldest traditions in the Marist Brothers is the use of the Salve Regina in community and personal prayer. While some of its theology comes from a particular period in Christian history, the sharing of prayer with Mary is a beautiful space. This variation on the Salve Regina draws inspiration from the deep sense of care for our common home, expressed throughout the entirety of our Judeo-Christian story, including in the contemporary words of Pope Francis. This Sund...ay night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with Mary to God, joining with her prayer and the prayer of others, in a spirit of solidarity and deep reverence. 03.01.2022 There are very few people who were able to change Jesus’ mind. Today’s Gospel gives the account from Matthew where a displaced outsider, and a woman, gives Jesus the opportunity to broaden his understanding, and to enact an expansive and loving deed of mercy. The equivalent passage in Mark names the woman as Syro-Phoenician, but the story, and result, are the same. It is a story of vulnerability and compassion. Matthew 7:21-28... The Faith of a Canaanite Woman Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly. Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us. He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. The woman came and knelt before him. Lord, help me! she said. He replied, It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs. Yes it is, Lord, she said. Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table. Then Jesus said to her, Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted. And her daughter was healed at that moment. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with Jesus, and the Canaanite woman, and allow the gift of the words of the story and its protagonists to deeply enter your heart. It is an invitation with contemporary implications. May your heart be free of prejudice and prepared for transformation. #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #jesus #canaanitewoman #transformation #change

03.01.2022 Article 1. The story of our spirituality is one of passion and compassion, passion for God and compassion for people. One of the seminal documents of the Marist Brothers is Water From the Rock. The text provides an articulation of some key themes and reflections of the spirituality of men and women who follow Marcellin Champagnat’s model of discipleship of Jesus, in the way of Mary. This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with al...l people, past and present, who express their spirituality with Marist influences and tones. 02.01.2022 International Day of the Religious Brother is marked on May 1. Unique in the Church, the vocation of a Brother remains a vital part of the living mission of God in the world today. First, being Brother is a relationship. It is a way of being with all people in a familial and loving way, especially with people who experience marginalisation in their societies. Secondly, it is choosing to be radically available to people, immersing into the realities in our times. Thirdly, it ...is witnessing to one’s discipleship of Jesus, freely living and building the Kingdom of God. As Marist Brothers, the call of Marcellin Champagnat to make Jesus Christ known and loved is as urgent and momentous as ever. May today be a reminder of the call of God in your life, seen in the lives of Brothers living their call today. #maristlife #maristbrothers #brothers #religious #relationship #radicalavailability #jesus #celebrateabrother

02.01.2022 What is my purpose? Our need for purpose and meaning in life is arguably one of the most defining characteristics of human beings. God has a plan and purpose for each of us. God creates us with unique gifts and talents and calls each of us by name. Discerning your vocation and calling though, can often feel overwhelming. Especially today, when our lives are so full of noise and busyness. We have so much competing for our attention and trying to speak into our lives, whic...h can often leave us feeling confused and lost. Our Christian tradition has always invited us to embrace silence, that sacred space where God keeps speaking to our hearts. Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, We need to find God and God cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. Silence is a gift. When we remove all distractions and noise, we deepen ourselves in God. And when we find God, we find our purpose. It is in silence, God speaks. #maristlife #vocation #discern #purpose #god #silence

02.01.2022 Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. Pedro Arrupe The posts this Vocations Awareness week have highlighted the gift and breadth of the vocational life of the Marist Brother in Australia. Your vocation is to be the best version of yourself grown in deep and unconditional love. The expressions of your vocation may lead you to places and people where you are most alive and stretched beyond measure.... Entering into this question may be for you: is God calling me to live as a Marist Brother, as an expression of my life? It can be a scary question to ask oneself. That’s ok. The invitations in discerning one’s vocation are threefold: to engage in prayer, reflective practices and accompaniment. These activities can help you deeply listen to your heart and God’s whisper, in growing into the trust sense of yourself. The complementary invitation is to walk with someone else as you discern: if you are looking for support in your discernment, please feel free to message us. Living one’s vocation is a lifelong enterprise. May you embrace yours with courage, faith and love. God is with you every step on the way. #maristlife #maristbrothers #themaristbrother #religiousbrothers #vocation #catholic #nvaw2020 #discernment #prayer #reflectivepractice #accompaniment

01.01.2022 Mary continues to be our model of discernment and action. This image by Stephen B Whatley evokes the activity of Mary as she moves into the present, and in haste. Here is a modern interpretation of the Magnificat that offers both challenge and reflection: My soul sings in gratitude.... I’m dancing in the mystery of God. The light of the Holy One is within me and I am blessed, so truly blessed. This goes deeper than human thinking. I am filled with awe at Love whose only condition is to be received. The gift is not for the proud, for they have no room for it. The strong and self-sufficient ones don’t have this awareness. But those who know their emptiness can rejoice in Love’s fullness. It’s the Love that we are made for, the reason for our being. It fills our inmost heart space and brings to birth in us, the Holy One. from Joy Cowley Modern Magnificat This Sunday night, I invite you to take a moment or a few minutes to pause and pray with Mary in a spirit of openness to God’s calling for action in your life. Where can you bring life? Where is justice pleading for you to be present? #sundaysignificance #maristlife #prayer #maristbrothers #mary #marian #Magnificat
