23.01.2022 We are into the last two weeks of the "Pics on the Rig" video installation on the May Queen. So please, if you haven't seen it, come along on one of our lovely spring evenings to see these films projected onto the rigging of our dear friend, May Queen. For those of you who have seen it, we would love to hear your thoughts and comments about the images and the installation. If we get a positive response to this, we may be able to host further imagery in the future. The installation comes down on the 17th!! So be quick

21.01.2022 "Under the spell of the Sea" - that is the title of our wonderful exhibition on the work of well-known maritime artist Bill Mearns. Sadly, Bill passed away in January, but he and his family had been able to come and see the exhibition installed and completed. Many Tasmanian homes and clubs display examples of Bill's art work. He was a prolific artist, with a keen eye for proportion, light and detail. However, people may not be aware of his beginnings in faraway Scotland. His family life and upbringing had a deep influence on his craft. Bill was not just a watercolour artist, he also did beautiful sketches and drawings, made model boats, constructed ships in bottles and carved wood. Our exhibition looks across all his craft. It is something not to be missed.

19.01.2022 AHOY THERE!!! BREAKING NEWS. Our new Permanent Exhibition on Tasmania’s Maritime History has opened in the Carnegie Gallery. This has been a major project for the Museum volunteers and staff over the past year. And we are so EXCITED (and more than a little exhausted) to be finally here. ... You will see hundreds of objects, artwork, photos, artefacts and stories from our wonderful collection. Many objects have NEVER been on display before. So come on in to see this SIGNIFICANT EXHIBITION. We are open everyday from 9-5 (except Christmas Day and Good Friday).

19.01.2022 There are many interesting stories to see in the newly reopened Maritime Museum. Come in and see our brand new ground floor galleries. The following images describe just some of them. Apologies but our upstairs gallery is still receiving its makeover treatment. However, we have a special discounted entry fee at the moment. $5 will get you in. that's cheaper than most good coffees these days, or a burger and definitely cheaper than most other attractions around Hobart.

11.01.2022 The Parade of Sail was held on Sunday partly in lieu of the AWBF. T’was a lovely day for sailing on the Museum’s own boat, the Westward with our trusty crew. Here are some pics from a grand day.

11.01.2022 Here's a great story from our good mates at the Wooden Boat Festival. Just shows why our maritime heritage is so special. Built in 1898 off Flinders Island, Tasmania, the wooden trading vessel, Britannia has been owned by five generations of the Davis family. Fourth generation Davis, Anne Laughton, shares her stories of Britannia and why the classic trading vessel has been so important to her.

07.01.2022 "WE'RE BACK!!!" And not in a scary Jack Nicholson sort of way. But in a "THANK GOODNESS, AFTER 10 MONTHS AND A COVID-INDUCED HAZE OF REDEVELOPMENT MADNESS, WE ARE FINALLY REOPENING". Yes, The Museum is opening it's doors NEXT MONDAY, 1 FEBRUARY 2021. We are really excited about this as we have two special exhibitions to entice you with - "Under the spell of the Sea", a retrospective of esteemed Hobart marine artist, Bill Mearns, and "Writing and the Sea", an exhibition sho...wcasing artefacts and stories from the Museum’s collection. Here's a few pictures to get you interested. We will be open 9 to 5 every day and our band of volunteers can't wait to welcome you. Our shop has been restocked and there are plenty of great buys. As you can imagine, we need to raise much needed funds to keep the Museum afloat so your support would be much appreciated. Come in and be part of the Museum's "rebirth"!!

06.01.2022 Aaarrggghh!!! Sorry to sound like a broken record but due to more high winds we have had to cancel tonight’s showing of Pics in the Rig. Our deepest apologies AGAIN.

05.01.2022 Our School Holiday Program is back on this January. This month our theme is "Maritime Medical Emergencies!" And we still have some limited places available on Wednesday 20th, Thursday 21st and Wednesday 27th. On each day our program runs from 10am to 12 noon. Cost is $6 per child. Bookings by email to: [email protected] Medical emergencies are never nice. History shows us that when bad things happen at sea, you really need to have a good plan. So, we thought th...is would be a good opportunity to learn about handling emergencies at sea. Do you know how they used pigeons in Tasmania to help sick people get treatment? How did they deal with infectious diseases onboard sailing ships? What flags did ships use to signal they had an emergency? If you were a ship’s captain, how would you control an onboard emergency? We have come up with some FUN activities that will help you learn about medical emergencies, and more importantly HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM. We will be outside on the waterfront if the weather is kind, so we expect that all parents/carers come prepared to participate and provide supervision for their own children. We will have small groups and will be abiding by current guidelines for social distancing etc.

01.01.2022 Aaarrggghh!!! Sorry AGAIN. !!!! But due to more high winds we have had to cancel tonight’s showing of Pics in the Rig. Our deepest apologies AGAIN.
