10.01.2022 First Aid and Marine training courses are still being offered during the Covid 19 restrictive period at the Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre (Sailing club). Attending education is an allowed activity under current restrictions. The training has been modified where required to comply with all current requirements, including personal distancing, hygiene and other requirements. Some courses now have study from Home/Work options to allow your people to be productive whilst i...solating with shorter duration practical sessions as required. We are finding there is a demand for this training to allow a seamless transition back to normal operations after the restrictions. Many are using their free time to up-skill to allow for progressions in their workplace. First aid will continue on a regular basis with study from home/work options and a very short 20 min practical session limited to 2 persons at a time. A Shipboard safety skill set course will be conducted next week on the 16th and 17th April. After the course sign in at the club, participants will be given resources to complete at home/work on the first day with the practical sessions taking place on the 2nd day. A Coxswains course is being run with limited numbers from the 20th of April. A Master <24, Master <35 and a MED 2&3 are also planned in the near future. Please feel free to contact the training centre on 49466138 for enquiries and bookings or alternatively, email [email protected]

08.01.2022 Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre is still standing after the fury of Tropical Cyclone Debbie ripped through Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays area. Our training vessel has copped a bit of damage so it is out of action for a couple of weeks until we can get it repaired. The training rooms are without power and water, which should be restored over the next few days, and we have a fair bit of cleaning up to do. However, we are hopeful we can still offer some of our scheduled c...ourses. The following courses are cancelled: BoatSafe 1 & 8 April Jetski 2 April We expect to be available answering any queries by Monday 3 April. Please contact Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre on 07 4946 6710 or [email protected]

03.01.2022 VALE RON GARDNER It is with great sadness that we have heard from Ron’s wife Annie Gardner today that our highly esteemed instructor Captain Ron Gardiner has passed away surrounded by his family. Ron was a legend to us at the Sailing Club and Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre where he was a Head Instructor for our commercial Maritime qualifications from 2013 until last year. Ron as head instructor was fulfilling his passion for passing on his nautical knowledge, ability, ...experience and of course sailing adventures to the many students that he taught. It was a standing joke in the training office when telephone enquiries or enrolments were received especially from the sailing and boating fraternity here and all along the coast that we know Ron Gardner - he was our Captain on Solway Lass or Camira or yes, he taught us or we have known Ron for years or they had met Ron at a party. We know firsthand that Ron was rather partial to parties and gatherings with his wife and many friends where they enjoyed playing musical instruments and having a great time. These times were recalled when Ron came in to the club rather quietly on a Monday morning. Ron’s passion for maritime commenced in 1979 where he owned and operated Rucuda Luxury Sailing Cruises at Fraser Island and Tin Can Bay. He graduated to the Whitsundays in 1988 where he owned and operated charter boats and water sports operations in Airlie and the Islands. Ron was also known to get quite excited when he was about to slip away to be the Master out of Cairns on MV Phoenix, the supply vessel to Willis Island for Australian Weather Services with several return trips per year. To Ron’s family from the Committee, staff and members it was a pleasure and privilege to know Ron as a member and friend. Our training team, Kaye, Leonie, Graham, Lydia and Instructors, Andrew Carr, Cal Callaghan, John Lathan, Adrian Bram, Doug Cross, Chris Green will look forward to hearing some more stories of Ron and telling a few. Ron’s celebration of his life has been arranged at Whitsunday Sailing Club on Thursday 26th November at 3pm, all invited, come in your Jimmy Buff et tropical apparel and become a Parrot head for the afternoon.
