19.01.2022 Stomach acid Your stomach acid is meant to be the hellfire that destroys all pathogens that enter the digestive tract. It also breaks down proteins that are later re-assembled to repair tissue, make neurotransmitters and hormones and act as enzymes. However many people have poor quality stomach acid due to poor diet, eating too quickly, not properly chewing food and diluting the acid by drinking while eating. This can lead to heartburn, reflux or indigestion and the temptatio...n to use antacids to treat the symptoms. Unfortunately the use of antacids and reflux medications in the long term only serve to increase the pH level of stomach acid making it even less effective at digesting. As well as heartburn and indigestion you may experience bloating, burping, constipation, diarrhoea, brittle nails, dry hair and skin and food sensitivities. Poor quality stomach acid can also lead to iron deficiency anaemia, pernicious anaemia (B12 deficiency), anxiety, gastritis, allergies, asthma, eczema, rosacea, osteoporosis and autoimmune conditions. This is why I always treat the gut (and stomach) when I treat any condition. I find enzymes and bitter herbs particularly helpful as well as education on how to eat properly. 13.01.2022 You’ve probably heard of the quote breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But is it true? Who said it and why? The phrase was coined by the American dietitian Lenna Cooper in 1944 and was part of an article she wrote for Good Health magazine. Actually it was a promotional piece for Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Dr John Kellogg, the inventor of Corn Flakes, was the editor of Good Health magazine. Clearly it was a successful marketing strategy because many millions of p...eople believe the statement to be true. If you believe that you can’t function properly without breakfast then maybe that saying has some truth. Personally I rarely eat breakfast; in fact I really eat till mid-afternoon. Having said that, I do enjoy bacon and eggs for breakfast on the weekends. Breakfast cereals are touted as a healthy and nutritious morning meal. The reality is that they are full of sugar, artificial preservatives, artificial flavours and colours and then topped with milk and sugar, both of which are highly inflammatory. The only cereal I would recommend is steel cut rolled oats to make porridge. Eggs, fried, poached or scrambled, or a vegetable omelette is ideal. But skipping breakfast as part of an intermittent eating plan is fine. There is no universal law that says that you must eat breakfast. Today I challenge you to only eat fresh food that you have prepared yourself from scratch using only natural ingredients. This means no processed food, nothing out of a packet and no junk food. 11.01.2022 Men are just as likely as women to have a mental health condition. In fact, 75% of deaths by suicide in Australia are by men. Whilst women are likely to both talk to their circle of friends and seek a medical help about mental health issues, men are less likely. They are more inclined to try to fix a personal health issues themselves because many view it as a personal failing or weakness. That’s why it is important for women to encourage their male loved ones to open up about... their struggle and seek help. Fortunately, more and more male celebrities are coming forward and talking about their mental health struggles. Talking about mental health is a great place to start but there may also be bio-chemical pathways that need to be addressed. Neurotransmitters that are used in the brain and body are made from the proteins in our diet. Dietary proteins are broken down into Amino Acids and then reassembled in whatever sequence the body needs. If the gut isn’t functioning at an optimum level, those amino acids, along with the minerals and vitamins needed as co-factors for these bio-chemical pathways may become dysfunctional. In my experience most people struggling with anxiety also have gut problems such as reflux, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. This is common in conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Cortisol acts on the central nervous system, metabolic system, and immune system to modulate the stress response There is an increase in the risk of autoimmune diseases in individuals with PTSD compared to those without any psychiatric illness PTSD is associated with low levels of morning cortisol and elevated levels of norepinephrine Excessive activation... of the HPA axis in response to trauma and sustained increases in corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) downregulate CRF receptors in the pituitary gland leading to downstream reduction in cortisol signalling, decreased secretion of cortisol, and subsequently increased cortisol sensitivity (Adrenal Fatigue) This leads to increased cytokine production (inflammation), fostering the hyper-inflammatory state frequently co-morbid with PTSD Inflammation may predispose an individual to PTSD, and inflammation may even form the biological basis of stress sensitization that precipitates PTSD after trauma exposure Chronic inflammation is a pathological feature of multiple somatic diseases that are highly co-morbid with PTSD including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, psoriasis, metabolic syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndromes and hypothyroidism. We wear rubber soled shoes that insulate us from the healing power of the earth’s natural supply of negative electrons. We have replaced natural sunlight with artificial light. We surround ourselves with damaging blue light emitting devices. We bathe in a constant sea of Wi-Fi and electromagnetic frequencies.
