02.01.2022 Making a mountain out of an (ant)hill? Since its opening in the 1980s, the Argyle Mine in Australia has produced some of the worlds most famous red and pink di...amonds. One of them is the 2.11 ct Fancy Red Argyle Everglow. Red diamonds are among the rarest of all fancy colored diamonds, and red diamonds without any color modifiers (such as brown) are even rarer. Their color comes from lattice defects caused by stress during the diamonds formation. This defect causes light to bend in a particular way that contributes to the red color. According to certain lore, diamond explorers first found the seam soon to become the Argyle Mine when they noticed shards glinting next to anthills; ants had pushed the shards out as nuisances while tunneling their homes.
