18.01.2022 Well done to Councillor Lorna Buchan who is my fellow Comet Bay Ward Councillor at the City of Rockingham. Lorna is very dedicated and goes the extra mile for residents and the community. She is not afraid to question, learn and make tough decisions: https://youtu.be/ncbyRkaUyxw

17.01.2022 Exciting news - I was recently endorsed as the Liberal candidate for the State district of Warnbro. This includes the suburbs of Warnbro, Port Kennedy, Secret Harbour, Golden Bay, Singleton, Karnup and part of Baldivis (south of Sixty Eight Rd). I have been fighting for our community as a City of Rockingham Councillor and now I want to step up and represent Warnbro in State Parliament. Our community expects their local MP to fight for the issues that matter most to them. That...’s exactly what I will do. The WA state election is not until Sat 13 March 2021 (next year) so we have a fair way to go. For too long the State Electorate of Warnbro has been a safe Labor seat. This has resulted in very few projects being delivered in the area including: a) the construction of the Karnup Train Station (broken Labor election promise) and insufficient parking at the Warnbro Train Station, b) expanding urban development in the area without the identification of a future Police Station between Mandurah and Rockingham, c) protecting the remaining sand dunes in Golden Bay from inappropriate development, and d) the provision of much needed public infrastructure and effective management of the Port Kennedy Scientific Park and Rockingham Lakes Regional Park, especially with the recent sale of 22 hectares of public land in Port Kennedy for $29 million. I am passionate about serving and fighting for our local community. I believe in local solutions to local problems and will fight for the issues that matter most to you and your family. I have the work ethic, skills and experience to be a strong advocate for you and Warnbro in State Parliament. Please get on board and like my page. Thank you all for your support! https://www.facebook.com/Mark4Warnbro/

17.01.2022 Due to the COVID-19 restrictions the function room at the City is still be used for office space. Many people would be pleased that we purchased our own drinks after the Council meeting last night. It was good to have Andy Burns (previous Councillor) along to hear about many of the exciting plans for Tourism Rockingham.

08.01.2022 Electors in the City of Rockingham will be able to elect the Mayor directly at the next local government elections, after Council approved changes to the method... of filling the office of Mayor at its meeting on Tuesday 22 September 2020. Council resolved to introduce an ‘elector Mayor’, which will replace the current system whereby councillors elect the Mayor among themselves. This change means the community will be able to vote directly on who should fill the office of Mayor at the next local government elections, which are scheduled to occur in October 2021. Understand more about the change and what it means at https://rockingham.wa.gov.au//council-approves-change-to-m

08.01.2022 Do you think a $200 write-off to Council rates would help people experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic? Read on: Back in March when the Council directed the CEO to prepare the 2020/21 Annual Budget with no increase in rates as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a lot of uncertainly and unknown financial implications. There still is. The Council in preparing the budget needed to find ways to reduce expenditure, use savings or increase debt. Ord...inarily, an outer metropolitan local authority like Rockingham would be considering a rates increase around 2.5% to keep up with inflation, fund the necessary increase in staff, services and facilities to a growing population. The decision of the State Government NOT to defer the revaluation of properties for metropolitan local governments has muddied the water and made it extremely difficult for Council not to increase rates for all properties. In order to collect the same rates yield as last year, the model and rate in the dollar proposed by the City staff has resulted in the rates for the majority of ratepayers decreasing or staying the same. I acknowledge and I am not happy that 29% of ratepayers rates could increase. The generous financial support provided by the Federal Government in the way of Job Keeper, Job Seeker and other payments has provided a lot of relief to many people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully, people may have also been able to save some money with less travel, dining and entertainment options as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. This relief may be artificial and short term so I have recommended an addition to the proposed financial hardship policy (also being considered this month) to write-off $200 from rates to provide additional relief to those residential and small business ratepayers negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I am uncertain how many people are genuinely in financial hardship and have not received adequate financial support and/or lost employment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed addition to the policy acknowledges this and proposes to assist them even if their rates decrease, stay the same or increase. I am still considering the option to provide a concession to only those ratepayers whose rates may increase.

08.01.2022 It was pleasing to hear that the Premier also announced tonight some financial compensation for those businesses that have been affected by the lockdown.

08.01.2022 Wonderful to attend and present an award on behalf of the City of Rockingham at the Grade 6 Graduation Assembly at Rockingham Lakes Primary in Port Kennedy this morning. There were a few watery eyes from students, staff and parents. Well done to everyone involved in the school community. I encouraged the students to 1. keep learning each day, 2. smile & have fun and 3. look out and help others. It has been a pleasure attending all the graduation ceremonies this year.

07.01.2022 It was a pleasure to recognise and thank many of the volunteers that contribute so much to our City. We love our volunteers and so many services and activities would not be possible without them. Each community organisation that is based in the City gets to nominate 1 person each year.

04.01.2022 Good news for West Australians...

04.01.2022 Good news for Point Peron with funds secured towards coastal management.

03.01.2022 You can be involved in scientific research by taking photos of beaches from a fixed smartphone camera stand. These photos are then uploaded, emailed and/or shared via social media to a database where they are analysed to measure how the beach is changing. The closest ones are on the Mersey Point Jetty near Penguin Island and the Henson Street Reserve, Mandurah. The information will help us study coastal processes to better understand coastal dynamics. It can also be used by ...decision makers such as local governments in coastal planning and management. Furthermore, decision makers and coastal researchers can use this data to investigate how much the beach may change during extreme conditions, or in response to the long- term effects of climate change. I encourage beach users to get involved in collecting scientific data so that we can continue to enjoy the beaches we value. The Peron Naturaliste Partnership has partnered with the University of Western Australia to implement the first ‘CoastSnap’ project in Western Australia. CoastSnap, which started in NSW, is now a successful global initiative that is engaging and involving the community in scientific and environmental research to monitor our changing coastline. The sites include vulnerable coastal locations in each of the nine Partnership member Local government areas - Mersey Point Jetty, Rockingham; Silver Sands, Mandurah; Heron Point, Birchmont; Preston Beach; Binningup Beach; Eaton Foreshore; Dolphin Discovery Centre, Bunbury; Dalyellup Beach; and Busselton Jetty You can view photos submitted by citizen scientists on the CoastSnapWA Facebook page. For further information visit the Peron Naturaliste Partnership website: https://www.peronnaturaliste.org.au
