24.01.2022 TARAGO DIARIES #37 ‘Truth’ Most of us at some point, will abandon the view that the Easter Bunny is real.... Like the virgin birth, it becomes pretty hard to argue, in the face of accumulated life experience. Fortunately most of us will come to accept that.. You’ve got to have sex to have children. But hey, you can never underestimate how hard some people will cling to a set of beliefs, long after the facts have proven them wrong. For many reasons. How long have they had them? How much of their life condition has been shaped by decisions that have arguably fucked them over... royally? If you’ve set up your entire life around a particular set of beliefs and you’ve invested everything in them, how hard would it be to let them go? Even when they’re clearly wrong? Your identity. Your self-respect. All at stake. What might other people think of you? If you start stirring your tea in the opposite direction to everyone else in the village? Far better to pull your head in lest someone lops it off! They might think you’re not a nice person. A heretic. A communist. Even evil. in fact, the collective stupidity may be so great that it is simply irresistible Put it another way. When a set of facts arrive that make a particular belief no longer personally useful, or even dangerous, like the idea that not vaccinating your children might kill them, or that testing people for corona virus actually causes more people to get infected, which appears to follow from recent comments made by the President of the United States, Trying figuring this: We have more cases because we have tested far more than any other country. If we tested less, there would be less cases, Did you get that last bit? You really have to wonder. Is human stupidity more widespread than you originally thought? I’m a long-time fan of human nature, but even I, in my do-gooder bubble, am gobsmacked by recent utterings. The other day, a bloke said to me.. on the cusp of compulsory masks.. Well, what I say to people is: A. The government wants to make as much money as possible. B. The government is giving money away C. So therefore, it follows the virus is real.. Fully loaded as it is, with a whole set of ridiculous assumptions about the nature of government, which this bloke has probably grown up believing because his parents did, well, at least he’s over the line. Right? And you know what? I can live with that. But the scary bit is right at the end.. He actually knows people who think the virus isn’t real! I mean, there could be thousands of them out there. So it may well be the case, despite mounting incontrovertible evidence, that some of us will need to be dragged, screaming and kicking, into the cold hard light of a greater truth.. Sometimes A DUCK is A DUCK! Mask up Comrades.

19.01.2022 #midnightoil Greetings Punters A short note to express my sorrow at the sad news that Bones Hillman has died. I remember bar hopping on tour with Bones in Paris in 1993..... We were quite close for a little while there. Bones was a good listener. He was a gentleman in the truest sense. You don't meet blokes like Bones too often. My heart goes out to the lads. It's a terrible loss for a band at any time but especially for the Oils right now.. with their latest offering of very powerful and important work.. 'The Makaratta Project' Many Australians will be grieving.. m

09.01.2022 'SOLITUDE' photo by Stuart Spence I was reminded yesterday of the many who live alone. ... How you or I might live, the choices we’ve made that got us there, the joy, fear and determination to survive under normal circumstances, Right now, for many.. those choices are gone. All those little flags of freedom.. tempered by the lockdown. There are people in your neighbourhood who’s best and only form of daily human contact may well have been little more than the local café, the library, or even the seven eleven. For some, solitude may well be close to unbearable. Little better than prison. And the walk ‘round the block all that they have.. their only link with the future.. Your smile, that soft ‘hello’.. might well be a daily life saver.. We are all social creatures. So be kind. Please
