17.01.2022 This was posted a year ago on my personal account. This is my son Declan.... A proud moment for me. I'm going to tell you a story about Will and Determination.... Everyday Declan watched me at night put my running gear on and leave the house, Day after Day after Day. He seen me leave to go to races and come home happy. Then one day he said to me "Daddy I want to run in a race" So I said ok mate but your going to need to train hard with me. I said I will be your trainer. 3 times a week he would get ready with me and run 3 to 5km...... He is only 5 years old and Autistic. He would train in the dark and the cold - it didn't stop him. Race day came - Hanging rock 3km kids race. We arrived and he was the youngest and smallest kid on the track. It was 2 laps around the race course. As it was his first race I promised Declan that I would run with him. We lined up, wait and bang the starters gun fired and off everyone went, kids passing us who were alot older and faster.... Before you knew it we were coming last and running on our own. Declan didn't care and he kept running. We finished the first lap, he was tired and then tripped over, he was shaken up and sore so I offered him a way out. I said "Declan would you like finish now?" And he shouted without stopping "No I want to keep going in the race" To Declan it wasn't about winning or even getting a place it was about the process and giving it 100% without quiting. 5 years old with the Will to achieve what he wanted to do.
