22.01.2022 Is this as good as it gets? There have been some comments recently that we should stick with our current Councillors because they have more experience at being Councillors. By that logic we should never ever worry about elections because someone else might get in. If you are absolutely fine with the way things have been run and there’s nothing that you would do differently then keep your current representatives. But if you disagree with the the decisions that have been made ...and the way things have been done then it’s also okay to look for someone who might produce a better result for you and your family. I have seven years experience working in the Senate, three years in the House of Representatives, four years working in State Government and seven years working for a major financial planning firm. At a time when our Council is going to have to work with Federal and State Governments, I have more experience than any other candidate. The Whitsundays can be better. 17.01.2022 Two questions this week from the Whitsunday Times. Feel free to leave your comments or further questions below. In what ways would you support the region in dealing with or recovering from the impacts of coronavirus? Two of our four industries agriculture and tourism will be profoundly affected, with a huge drop in tourism demand and labour shortages in seasonal agriculture.... So here are some suggestions where Council can make a real difference: - Bus transport subsidies to take residents between low-work and high-demand areas; - Rate relief for local businesses; - Reduce Council payment terms from 30 days to 7 days after invoice for local suppliers; - Increased funding for tourism advertising within Australia; - Examine all fees and charges and remove or reduce those that impede job creation; - Pause all Council enforcement activities except for the worst breaches. Parking across two disability spaces will still get you a ticket, overstaying the time limit by half an hour won’t. Council is going to have to work effectively with Federal and State governments to target relief, forgoing some revenue and making some very tough decisions on expenditure. From your understanding, what do the people in your division want and how will you help deliver this? There are a number of concerns that people have raised with me including vegetation, business confidence, parking and the vibe. - Let’s plant more native trees for shade, for wildlife and to improve the visual amenity of the town; - Business needs certainty and the belief that Council is working for them, not against them; - Part of that confidence means making it easier for people to shop and making it easier to park. We need to plan for temporary parking while we’re looking at long-term solutions for the area, including the introduction of resident parking permits; - Then there’s the vibe. Locals and visitors have fond memories of the time when Airlie was a party town and people went out and enjoyed themselves. Recent changes have had an impact on the amenity of Airlie and I think we have to go back to what makes our area special.
16.01.2022 Something new for me this morning at the markets. I was talking to a resident for a while - he wasn't able to vote this time because he was waiting to get the dates for his citizenship ceremony so he could become an Australian. He was from China and we had a good chat about the feelings you get when you exchange one country for another. The biggest change was the freedom for him and his family to live their lives with support but without interference.... In times of crisis it's good to be reminded that there's a very fine line between the two.
