13.01.2022 We have received reports of fake tradies, who are targeting elderly and vulnerable residents. So be on guard and warn elderly relatives, friends and neighbours.... These dodgy tradesmen will approach you in your garden or knock on your door and offer services like roof repairs, house painting, tree cutting or driveway resurfacing at cheap prices or today only specials. They may even show you a flyer that looks legit. They use aggressive tactics to get your cash up-front and then disappear with your money, leaving you with shoddy or unfinished work and no way to contact them. If you suspect someone may be a fake tradie, ask for their full name and registration or licence details, which you can then check with their industry authority. Do not make any agreement with them until you or someone you trust can check them out thoroughly. Record as much information about them as you can, including their appearance and vehicle registration number and report them to your local police or the national travelling con men hotline on 1300 133 408. Find out more information about fake tradies at https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/faketradies

11.01.2022 Have you received a robocall purporting to be from the National Broadband Network warning that your internet will be disconnected? Its part of a sophisticated ...NBN phone scam that is doing the rounds, to try to con people out of their money and personal information. Please be alert and also warn your elderly family members, friends and neighbours. NBN Co says it does not make robocalls to advise of service disconnections and it NEVER makes unsolicited calls to request payment or bank account info. If you get a call like this, hang up immediately and, if in doubt, phone your own internet service provider to check if the call is legit. The scammers appear to be targeting people who are preparing to connect to the NBN or live in areas where it is yet to be rolled out. The automated call invites people to press "1" or "2" for next steps; they are then transferred to a "call centre" where scammers try to persuade them to pass on financial information to prevent their internet from being cut off.
