25.01.2022 Melbourne is unfortunately back in lockdown, however lovely pianist Elyane Laussade - Concert Pianist and I were able to record this beautiful song together in her piano studio just in the nick of time! Please enjoy!

25.01.2022 One of the most popular songs sung by the Maroondah Singers is In Flanders Fields. The version below is much the same as ours and although it is not our choir performing we thought it was well worth playing. Lest We Forget.

22.01.2022 Something to really savour!

22.01.2022 Following his involvement in the Self-Isolation Choirs Messiah at Home project Nick Hansen enjoyed the first week of the choirs Summer School focused on the music of renowned British composer John Rutter. A highlight started a week earlier when he recorded his bass part (audio) for the beautiful hymn For The Beauty of The Earth and culminated at the end of the course with the premiere of the version featuring voices from the choir, the piano of Ana England and the conducting of Ben England. The following is a link to the recording of which Nick was very proud. See https://youtu.be/4kUFQj5NBpo.

Here is our first pi...ece together whilst in isolation. It has been an interesting process performing separately and something we are getting used to. We hope you enjoy what we have created! 18.01.2022 Today was the brightest day for me because I had the opportunity to perform again. Brought to you from the comfort of our own homes, on opposite ends of Melbour...ne, I owe a big heartfelt thanks to my brilliant pianist Adam McMillan for teaming up with me to record this song O Lovely Night (from the song cycle Summertime) by Sir Landon Ronald. This year is the Melba Opera Trusts 10-Year Anniversary, and as we are both proud Alumni of the Trust we thought it would be nice to pay tribute to Melba Opera Trust and Dame Nellie Melba herself by sharing this song which she recorded in New York in 1909. It gives me immense joy to share this with you we hope you enjoy it! #melbaoperatrust #melbaalumni #keepthemusicgoing #soprano #operasingersofinstagram #musicismagic #instamusic #instaclassical #instapiano #alwaysamelba #isolation #stayathome #pandemic #artistsinisolation

15.01.2022 Happy Easter everyone! I hope you have all had an enjoyable day celebrating online with your friends and family during this physically isolated festive period. ...My talented friend and colleague Helen Dodd has put together a recording of a rather large group of singers (myself included) and instrumentalists from across the globe. The song is The Lord is my Shephard by Howard Goodall. Please enjoy! See more

15.01.2022 An interesting perspective on the future of choral singing. See https://theworldnews.net//choirs-confronting-covid-tragedi.

15.01.2022 Tonight I performed Carmen #5 in Barrie Koskys iconic production with Oper Frankfurt. We had a few cast changes and my partner in crime tonight was Mikoaj Tr...bka. The big Euro sign is always lit up just outside the opera house as Im walking home. And the shot of me in a tuxedo was from last nights Ensemble Dinner, a night when the patrons and good friends of the opera company get to see and hear some of the singers in an intimate setting. Never a dull moment! Happy weekend everyone. @ Frankfurt, Germany See more

14.01.2022 In 2006 leading English composer Patrick Hawes and his brother Andrew produced a song with great meaning for these modern Covid-19 times. The words of Quanta Qualia express a heartfelt longing for the joys of meeting and has been performed by the like of New Zealand star soprano Hayley Westenra and the amazing English choir Voces8. This year members of the Self-Isolation Choir (including the Maroondah Singers Nick Hansen recorded the lovely song after learning it during the recent Summer School. 05.01.2022 A message from life member Nick Hansen: Former Maroondah Singers tenor the late David Hallum was a wonderful inspiration to me and in 2003 he gave me a 1942 copy of Handels Messiah. At the front he wrote: Doesnt matter what you sing as long as you enjoy singing it. Dont just scratch the surface like the silverfish have done with this cover! Nearly 17 years later I have been using the book as part of my involvement in putting together a virtual performance of Messiah. Tal...k about not just scratching the surface. The complete Messiah will be performed in an historic way in extraordinary times this Monday June 1 at 4.30 am (Sunday 7.30pm May 31 British time). Messiah at Home is the first virtual performance of the oratorio (any oratorio in fact) and comes 278 years after it was first performed in 1742. It brings together voices from the 3600 strong international Self-Isolation Choir (including myself) and features a specially formed, small baroque orchestra and four superb soloists, who have all recorded their parts at home. They are all led by inspiring Musical Director Ben England. The concert, lasting 2.5 hours, will be broadcast exclusively live from the Self-Isolation Choir website and will remain there for several days to enable viewing by those in different time zones who find the timeslot too challenging. If you have a score of Messiah or know it very well you can sing along with the choruses in a way that Handel would never have expected. A voluntary contribution can be made to charity with a 5 donation. The web address is www.theselfisolationchoir.com. See more

05.01.2022 For those who love to hear quality music.

04.01.2022 The new Maroondah Singers Vocal Scholar for 2020 was revealed at the choirs Annual General Meeting on February 24. Musical Director Lyn Henshall introduced baritone Stephen Coutts and presented him with his certificate. Stephen had previously performed as one of three guest artists under the vocal scholarship program in 2014.Lyn outlined some of Stephens experience, including as a teacher in four schools and as a performer with several opera-related organisations while espe...cially noting his qualifications in speech and drama. He then sang Auf der Donau by Franz Schubert and Some Enchanted Evening from the musical South Pacific. Another highlight was the presentation of life memberships to Nick Hansen and Jean Skelly by president Merrilyn Velcek. Both recipients have contributed greatly to the choir in areas such as publicity and social activities. Later Merrilyn was reappointed as president, along with Lars Fermvall as vice-president, Dorothy Wright as treasurer and Peter Naughtin as secretary. Nick Hansen, Robyn Cox, Ross Clark and Philippa Bailey remain as committee members while Kim Glasgow has joined for the first time. Ally Openshaw has stepped down from the committee and was recognised for her contribution to the choir, including one year as president. Pictures by Carsten Schley. See more

04.01.2022 Dear Friends and Supporters: Because of concern for the spread of the Coronavirus in Victoria it has been decided by the choir committee to cancel the Autumn Concert scheduled for April 19 as well as suspend choir practice. The decision has been taken out of concern for choir members, our concert audience and good advice from health authorities. We hope you all manage to stay safe and healthy during this worrying time and look forward to your continuing support.
