14.01.2022 When it comes to the dates on your foods, do you know the difference between Best Before and Use By? If you have a product that is "best before" a certain date, it is still okay to eat for a while after this date, but it may have lost a bit of quality by this point. If your product has "use by" on it though, these foods are a little bit more serious. if sold and consumed after this date, they could pose a health and safety risk to the person consuming them, so it is best to f...ollow the label and dispose of these if they pass this date. Some products may have a "use by" date that is well into the future when you buy it, but keep an eye on "once opened" warnings too. Some of these products stay well preserved in their packaging, but once they are opened may only last a few days or weeks. Remember, foodborne illness can be serious, so if you are not sure about a food, trust your gut and dispose of it safely! See more

13.01.2022 The average Australian consumes almost double the amount of sodium they need for good health.* The National Health and Medical Research Council advises that Australian adults should aim to consume no more than one teaspoon (5 grams) of salt a day (or 2,000mg of sodium a day) in order to prevent chronic disease.* Here are some easy tips to help you and your family cut down on your salt in-take: 1. Limit store bought and takeaway food. These are usually much higher in salt ( as... well as kilojoules, saturated fat and sugars) than homemade food. 2. Read food labels. Look for products with 'no-added salt', or at least 'reduced' or 'low salt'. Better choices are those with less than 120mg of sodium per 100g. 3. Is all salt is the same? Don't be fooled by trendy claims all salt is the same. Whether it's pink, rock or vegetable, it's still salt, and has the same effect on our health. 4. It's in the sauce. A squirt of sauce, a drizzle of dressing on a salad can really start to add up. Why not try making your own homemade sauces? 5. Surely not breakfast? Believe it or not, breakfast cereals can be high in salt, and that toast we’re eating could be too. When shopping, read the nutritional information and make sure to look for low sodium products. *https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/heal/HealthyLiving/salt

09.01.2022 How much sunscreen do you really need? The teaspoon rule is a really great method to remember, and we have created a handy chart to help you and your family ...visualise it! An average-sized adult would need 1 teaspoon each (about 5ml) for their face, arms, legs, and front and back of torso, so 7 teaspoons total. This should be applied at least every 2 hours when you are out in the sun (even more often if you're sweating or swimming). We all have different requirements for our skin and sun protection, so if you are not quite sure what kind of sunscreen will be best, our team at your local Soul Pattinson Chemist can help you out. You can download a poster copy of this chart via the link in the comments! See more

07.01.2022 Now more than ever we know the importance of washing your hands properly. As a parent, you can follow these easy four step process to teach your kids about clean hands! 1. Get your hands wet in clean water. Put soap on your hands and make suds. 2. Rub your soapy hands together long enough to sing Happy Birthday in your head twice. Clean your palms, the back of your hands, and between your fingers. Don’t forget to clean under your nails. Nails can trap dirt and germs. ...3. Hold your hands under clean, running water. Rub them to rinse them fully. 4. Shake your hands a few times, then dry them with a clean towel or hand dryer. Done! Learn more here: https://www.stanfordchildrens.org/en/topic/default

06.01.2022 Have you got a snake bite kit? Australia is home to many different species of snake, and while the best way to handle one is to go nowhere near it, sometimes the unexpected can happen. Having a snake bite kit with you if you are out in the bush, or in your car or home, can help you be prepared. Our team can help you put one of these together. A basic snake bite kit will usually contain: - 2-3 large heavy crepe bandages - Antiseptic cream - A thermal blanket... - A marker pen - A snake/spider bite guide Knowing what to do in the event of a snake bite could one day save your life or the life of someone you love. To learn about what to do if someone is bitten by a snake, you can check out this page written by the Queensland government: https://www.health.qld.gov.au//what-to-do-if-you-get-bitte
