25.01.2022 Your orchestra is rehearsing for the Flood Benefit concert tomorrow. If you are unfamiliar with Copland's 'Quiet City' you really can't miss this. Gut-wrenching work for trumpet (Paul Goodchild), sop sax (Christina Leonard) and strings.
25.01.2022 STOP PRESS: On Sunday 6 February The MvSO is joining with Sydney Brass, Leichhardt Espresso Chorus, Sydney Chamber Choir, The MLC Chamber Choir, and over 100 choristers from all over Sydney for a Flood Benefit Concert. Go to our website
25.01.2022 Huge thank you to everyone out there for your continued support, especially to Meghan FitzGerald, our 200th member! Meghan says "I found out about MvSO on facebook from friends 'liking' it. Think it's very cool to rejuvenate history, and I believe very strongly in community music as the soul of the industry. I'm a flute player too and am looking forward to auditioning!" Keep spreading the word.
24.01.2022 When is an audition not an audition? When it's an MvSO audition! Don't be put off - the audition will be fun and friendly. It will be a chance for us to meet you and it will help us to place you in the best seat. Click the link below to register. THE VERY SPECIAL 'I HATE AUDITIONS' AUDITION - If you really hate auditions, they make you sweat and shake and you forget what instrument you're meant to be playing - we have a very special arrangement for you. Email Tony at [email protected] to find out more.
24.01.2022 ...and we're also in the Inner City Weekender! Thanks to Sarah Mills and to Alex Barthel for his wonderful photo of Imogen and Mary.
23.01.2022 Here's some photos from the historic first rehearsal of the reborn MvSO. Worked through some serious repertoire tonight (Haydn No. 100 'Military', Mozart No. 39). Next week: Beethoven No.1, Mozart No. 41 and a new Australian work by Nigel Sabin. Still taking membership applications. Just visit website www.mvso.org.au
23.01.2022 We've just hit 300 'likers'. Many thanks to all of you for your continuing support. A reminder we are only 9 days away from the concert and we are at 75% capacity. I suspect there will not be any tickets available on the night. You will need to book (very un-'gen Y' I know) if you wish to enjoy this evening of splendid classics.
23.01.2022 Quite simply, if you weren't there - you weren't there. Blessings, thanks praise and adoration to all the artists of the orchestra who gave their time and talent to create something truly unique. I have never seen a Sydney audience give a standing ovation - let alone one so heartfelt, instant and in unison, as one they stood and cheered, and you deserved every clap tenfold.
22.01.2022 We'll be performing Beethoven's Eroica at our free concert 7pm Saturday 16th April. The Michael Tilson Thomas gives some wonderful analysis, background and commentary on the work at this wonderful site by the San Francisco Symphony.
22.01.2022 Take a look at our new poster! You can help spread the word by downloading the MvSO audition poster and put it up on noticeboards at school, uni or in your favorite cafe! For extra credit (and a bottle of bubbly of your very own to share during our Gala performance) post a photo of yourself with a newly posted poster. In the meantime, grateful thanks to all of you for your support as we fast approach 200 friends.
22.01.2022 Plea for assistance: We need a ute or a van! We need to move a couple of tympani across town on Sunday afternoon. Can you help or do you know someone who might be able to help. Leave a comment and much love will be bestowed upon you. Or if love doesn't do it for you perhaps a half case will?
22.01.2022 We are in this week's Inner West Courier (pg.9) distributed yesterday and it's driving ticket sales crazy! Of course this would be the week our copy got nicked off the lawn so I haven't seen it yet. An excuse for a wander up the street to find one. Oh and the point I'm trying to make is - BOOK NOW or there may be no room for you!
20.01.2022 It is with great excitement we can confirm soprano Emma Matthews is joining a cast of Sydney's finest (and most generous) musicians for our Flood Benefit Concert on Sunday 6 February. For more information see
20.01.2022 Yeah, we've stolen this from the other MSO. Come and hear Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, the precursor to the Big One (Ninth Symphony) and also Cherubini's rarely performed Requiem in C minor - the requiem Beethoven wished he'd written. 3pm Sunday 7 August, Marrickville Town Hall. www.mvso.org.au for more...
20.01.2022 MvSO needs a photographer to take some great photos of our first rehearsal so we can drum up some publicity. Are you (or do you know) a photographer who who might be available. 6pm - 9pm Monday 23 August, Petersham Town Hall. Please leave a comment, email ([email protected]) or call Tony on 0416 201 771. We promise not to tarnish your art with offers of fiscal inducement.
19.01.2022 Sunday's extraordinary concert shows the power of a community united in compassion with music as catalyst. Sydneys finest mucicians combined to deliver a outstanding performances that entertained, inspired, moved and delighted a capacity crowd. $11,522 was raised for our Queensland friends - an amount to be proud of. To all involved - thank you and well done.
19.01.2022 As we streak into the home straight (Bathurst has had an effect) I can't not mention our three amazing soloists who have agreed to join us for our concert on Thursday. Simone Easthope (soprano) - graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2006. Next month Simone will be travelling to New York to take up a prestigious scholarship at the Metropolitan Opera after winning the prestigious Lady Fairfax 2010 New York Scholarship. Anna Yun (mezzo-soprano) - Originally from ...Siberia (Russia) Anna joined the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2006 and is currently studying with Dr. Rowena Cowley. Anna sang the role of Mrs Grose in The Turn of the Screw in March this year for the University of Sydney Opera Company to great critical acclaim. Alexandra Carson (clarinet) - is studying with Francesco Celata at the Sydney Conservatorium of music, She has played as a guest musician of the Sydney Symphony and as a member of the Sydney Sinfonia since 2007 and of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra since 2008. For more about each of these wonderful musicians please visit our website www.mvso.org.au
17.01.2022 We've just played through Beethoven Symphony No.2 and I am currently listening to Mozart Symphony No.40 Everyone knows the first movement... (De,dit, dee - de,dit, dee - de,dit, dee, dum; De,dit, dee - de,dit, dee - de,dit, dee.) but I'd forgotten about the third movement - a darkish minuet with cute trio section. Lovely. The orchestra is sounding amazing. If you haven't yet, clear your diary and book your tickets for the gala.
17.01.2022 Great new ad from ACO about the classical music experience (see link in comments). If I were to criticise - no suggestion is made that some effort may be required from the audience member to fully participate in the artistic experience but of course this may not be easy or even possible in a 30 second clip. Well done ACO - give your marketing team a box of chockies!
17.01.2022 An Orchestra Reborn - On 14 October 1945, after 15 years and 161 concerts, the Marrickville Municipal Symphony Orchestra, the first council-supported suburban orchestra in Sydney, performed its last concert in the Marrickville Town Hall. Sixty five years later, on Thursday 14 October, 2010 the Marrickville Symphony Orchestra will be born anew with a gala performance in the Marrickville Town Hall. Tickets to this historic event are free, but bookings are essential. To book your tickets simply click the link.
16.01.2022 If we all survive tomorrow's apocalypse, why not join us Saturday week for for a Haydn's Creation. The Macquarie Singers join with the MvSO for a performance of this pillar of the classical repertoire. You havent lived until you've heard the rumbling creation of of the whales (superbly in German: große Walfische).
16.01.2022 Last night MvSO auditions were a great success with the orchestra now numbering 30 musicians and growing! See and hear from the newest additions to the MvSO family...
16.01.2022 Is seeking members! Auditions and membership are free. What's on offer? Eight rehearsals in the impressive art deco surrounds of Petersham Town Hall, tutorials with some of Sydney's finest orchestral musicians, culminating in a gala performance in Marrickville Town Hall conducted by Brett Weymark. Auditions will be held on Monday 16 August. To register and book a time for your free audition click the link below.
15.01.2022 The "find your double" app mysteriously took over our page. Apologies. Everyone knows no orchestra could be as gorgeous as our orchestra. :-)
14.01.2022 Due to unfortunate clashes and illness we must announce the postponement of the concert "A Dance to the Music of Time" scheduled for 7pm this Saturday 18 April at Petersham Town Hall. The event will be rescheduled shortly.
14.01.2022 The best of all possible things that could ever happen has just happened. With perfect timing we are going to be in the Daily Tele tomorrow. This means that we will most likely completely sell out tomorrow. So last chance peoples... If you're comming book now.
14.01.2022 Ok we've just doubled our ticket sales over the weekend. Why? No extra media as far as I can tell. Can anyone enlighten me? Have you seen some MvSO press that we've missed? What a nice problem to have, raging ticket sales for no discernible reason. Love you guys.
10.01.2022 See the wonderfully detailed, evocative and controversial history of the orchestra written by Robert Parkinson. Robert's essay questions whether the orchestra really did fold on 14 October 1945, illuminates some very close ties between the orchestra and the Australian Communist Party(!) and paints a vivid picture of life in suburban Sydney against the background of the rise out the depression through to the end of WWII. Download the pdf at the link below!
09.01.2022 OMG! The original MvSO actually recorded a music video (well 16mm) in 1945 that was released in 1946 of a work by Australian composer John Benson, "Tales from a Summer Night". And it still exists. And the NFSA might be able to lend it to us... Stay tuned!
09.01.2022 We are looking forward to meeting everyone at the auditions this evening! There are some slots still available so if you are in the middle of some last minute prevaricating, please drop Tony a line and I am sure he will be able to squeeze you in! 0416 201 771.
06.01.2022 Warm your flagging spirits huddled against the cold blasts of Winter's worst; be cosseted by the fire of MvSO's next concert "A Choral Fantasy" in partnership with the wonderful Sydney choir Bel a Cappella. More information on our website www.mvso.org.au.
04.01.2022 We've just received permission from the author Chrys Meader to reprint a short history of the original Marrickville Symphony. It comes with a great old shot of the orchestra. Have a look!
04.01.2022 OK, web heads - I need your help! The MvSO site is still not registering on google. I've used google webmaster tools and I've made a half hearted attempt at getting keywords right. It's got a few links from facebook pages but none from elsewhere. What else can I do so a search for 'Marrickville Orchestra' or 'Marrickville Symphony' brings it up? A bottle of cheap bubbly at the gala concert to the one who fixes it.
03.01.2022 Woot! The MvSO website is now listed on Google and it's at the top of the list! Many thanks to Sam, Simeon, Michael and Leona for helping out. The final solution was both frustratingly cryptic and stupidly simple. If anyone really wants to know how I figured it out email me and I'll tell you (much too long and boring for Fb)
02.01.2022 If you like a little Ralph Vaughan Williams, why not try something I guarantee you'll not have heard before. The Leichhardt Wind Orchestra is headlining a concert with his Tuba Concerto with Jy-Perry Banks on tuba. This Sunday at 3pm in the Leichhardt Town Hall.
