01.01.2022 Curled up in front of a fire with a good book. Definitely a worthy read with a fascinating insight to life as a convict in Van Diemen's Land. The book gives a boisterous account of his adventures as a bushranger on the run in Tasmania and the horrors of the British/Australian penal system. After his capture he evaded execution due to his Irish charm and was pardoned after a brutal stint at Norfolk Island. As a free man he spent 4 years in New Zealand (reputed to have run a ...string of brothels)! Finally, in 1855, he returned to Tasmania where he purchased 160 acres of land "resolving to spend the residue of my stormy and eventful life in the calm and tranquil enjoyment of rural retirement". He died peacefully in 1878 at 67 years old.
