25.01.2022 Tiro's fronts had a couple of cracks with signs of seedy toe. So I opened them up, treated them and, as it will be wet, I'll leave his #ScootBoots on overnight to prevent thrush. They'll keep his feet off the mud, and allow the hooves to breathe and the soles to drain. I am curious to see how the inside of them looks tomorrow. Scoot Boots are among the very few brands which claim they can be left on 24/7. Note: @scootbootsdownunder doesn't sponsor these posts. I just apprecia...te hoof boots, and scoots in particular. #HoofBoots #HoofBootsForTurnout #BarefootHorse #HorseKeeping #HoofHealth #HoofThrushPrevention #HoofThrush

24.01.2022 24hrs with the #ScootBoots on in mud sand arena. There's still some honey and sudocrem from yesterday right where he needs them. You can even see some dry spots on the bars, I think I may have wet them when I removed the boot. Less maintenance, less hassle, less reapplications necessary, more playtime . #BarefootHorse #HoofBootsForTurnout #HoofThrushPrevention ... #HoofHealth #HoofBoots #HolisticHorseCare See more

20.01.2022 This could be big. It's high time to have a serious debate founded on evidence rather than tradition and inertia. Why not open the doors to diverse approaches, if we truly care about our equine companions' wellbeing?

19.01.2022 Does my horse really need that noseband? Does it really need to be that tight? Am I willing to put time and effort into my communication skills? The more mindful we are of our training, the less tack we actually need. EDITED: It'll be nice when the looseness/absence of a noseband is seen as one more possible sign of sophisticated equestrianism. In truth, this is an easily solvable welfare issue!

17.01.2022 Ok folks, can you help.... I’d like to know your favourite horsey quotes! I’m working on a mindfulness colouring book: Exploring Equine Anatomy. It’s so nearly there!! I’d just like few more lovely horsey quotes in addition to my own...Any suggestions??? Thank you in advance!!!

17.01.2022 Thank you, Alienor, for putting your trust in me in this stretch of your journey with horses. I truly appreciate you as a horsewoman. The travel restrictions forced us to postpone what was going to be a clinic in February and introduce the freedom-based foundation with online lessons. Your persistence through the first stages, allowing the brumbies the time and space they needed to cross the bridge towards domestication, paved the way for peaceful, sensitive communication and playful learning that we could explore this weekend. And it's only the beginning! Looking forward to what comes next for you guys .

15.01.2022 See that track in front of her right front? Desca has a history of leaning excessively on it, and places it way forward when sranding. Special care has been given to her feet, and she's had physical therapy, in-hand and mounted work to help her strength and balance. She has an amazing human :-). At Liberty, we have gradually asked her to stand square. When there is such an imbalance, I like to push the pendulum to the other end, so we ask her to shift more weight to the ...left side (second and third photos), through #HorseCrunches and #CarrotStretches, even luring when giving her rewards. We've reinforced her better posture with praise, treats, and lots of *breaks*. Working with #PositiveReinforcement 1) We expand her levels of physical comfort, since she's relaxed and will show us more easily how far she can go without hurting herself. 2) She has to work for it from a place of positive motivation, so she rewrites her neural pathways more effectively. 3) By reinforcing a healthier posture with pleasure, we work towards a self-reinforcing #VirtuousCycle. The imprint of the first photo was Desca on her, who offered to bring the leg back from where he used to plant it. It was really exciting to see her do it out of the corner of my eye, because at that moment we had our backs turned. There are still several factors to consider, but it's quite encouraging that Desca has started to offer and maintain a much better stance on her own . Horses are such generous creatures. It is a real pleasure to be able to guide them towards healthy habits such as posture and balance! #FreedomBasedTraining #EquinePosture #Halt #InHandWork #InHand #GroundWork #BalancedHorse #StraightHorse #TrainingHorses #GoodHorseHabits #HealthyHorseHabits #EquinePhysiotherapy #EquineBiomechanics #StackYourLife @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

11.01.2022 Yesterday at the station. After a morning of groundwork with the two new brumbies, we went for a ride. I was honoured to ride the handsome Cooper, one of the Guy Fawkes Heritage horses with whom Alienor did her 5000K trek across Australia. We did a bit of cattle herding, and then rode through paddocks of nice, tall grass. @wild_at_heart_australia #BarefootHorse #BitlessRiding ... #TrailRiding #WildAtHeartAustralia #GuyFawkesHeritageHorses #Brumbies #AustralianStation @ Gin Gin, Queensland See more

09.01.2022 Whether shod, booted or barefoot, it's amazing how just a few millimetres down there make such differences!

09.01.2022 NOW PUBLISHED, ALSO IN PRINT! FREE EBOOKS ALSO AVAILABLE! We know so much about horses but have such little understanding of the horse. Understanding the horse’...s nature allows us to pursue choice rather than control, connection instead of coercion. This is a reality that I now experience with my own horses. A path to the horse is open to all of us. Simply discover the power of being with horses. Is it not time to be fully human for them, for ourselves? 09.01.2022 When we hurry through the first months, we spoil their "best" years.

08.01.2022 Today, I was working on a podcast episode coming out at the end of this month, on rehabbing lameness through proper movement, biomechanics, and dynamic balance.... One of the concepts we kept coming back to was the idea of the aesthetics of the hoof. So often, we want to see these perfectly symmetrical feet as a standard for hoof health. We might even try to tell the foot how to get there, or force it to be where we want it- we remove what we think doesn't fit with our ideas of how the foot should look. Pete Ramey once told me something along the lines of "too many horses are trimmed for a perfect social media photo, to the detriment of their comfort." Sometimes, I think this might be true, whether we realize it or not! The horse will let us know if what we are doing to their feet is working or not... And that doesn't mean if the hoof LOOKS better, but if the horse is more comfortable and more sound. A hoof might grow in a way that "looks odd," but helps the horse compensate for conformational issues, past injuries, or internal pathology. We can make feet look pretty all day long, but if the horse is sore, we haven't helped at all. Watch the horse move. Look for comfort, good balanced landings, and better relaxed body movement. Because in the end, the horse is the final judge.

07.01.2022 Andrew Glynn-Smail asks challenging questions, sometimes uncomfortable questions. That's how I know they're important . And he's now offering some answers for free. That's how you know his writing has the best motivations .

07.01.2022 It's a huge honour to have been on "Come Along for The Ride", one of the best horsey podcasts out there! I don't know why I speak so slowly on this one (I don't always talk like this, my wife says so), but podcast technology is great, so feel free to listen to it at 1.5x (or 5x) speed . 04.01.2022 ReSharing-so true

02.01.2022 Working with @wild_at_heart_australia and her horses, including two brumbies, on her station. We will work on habituation, desensitation, halter training and general handling and gentling from the freedom-based foundation that Alienor has built. Then some riding. Tomorrow we'll also be looking at hoof trimming. #WildAtHeartAustralia #LibertyHorseTraining #FreedomBasedTraining #FreedomHorseTraining #AustralianCountrySide

01.01.2022 I did a post on "hay high" that had to go back to the draft board. Here, it is very well synthesized. This is an important nuance to the "horses must eat from ground-level" rule of thumb. For those who feel shocked by this departure from the "norm", the words of Mencken: "Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem neat, plausible, and wrong." Please, let's read carefully: a mind can be both critical and open.
