25.01.2022 Kurkati, tinka, milpali or sand goannas, live in the sandhills and plains country and have always been an important source of kuka (meat) for Anangu of this area. They are still hunted in the spring and summer time when they have ended their underground hibernation and can easily be tracked across the red sands. Although the majority of animals carved on the lands are lizards some Anangu have increasingly specialised in stylised tjulpu tjuta or birds. All desert inhabitants,... they range in size and species from the tiniest nyii-nyii or zebra finch to large walawuru, the wedge tail eagle. 22.01.2022 Contemporary carvings by Anangu (Central and Western Desert Aboriginal people) are known as punu, hand carved and decorated with walka: patterns burnt into the wood with wire heated on a wood fire. The animals all have their associations with the Tjukurpa, the stories of the Creation Ancestors and the activities which shaped the land, the people and their Law. Many of the details of Tjukurpa are restricted to senior custodians but where possible, the details of a carving’s st...ory will be described. Snakes carved on the lands are usually Kuniya (python), Liru (dangerous snake) or Wanampi (water serpent) and have connections with the Tjukurpa dependent on the artist, their kin and country. 21.01.2022 A unique mind Kunmanara (Niningka) Lewis With great sadness we regret to inform you about the passing of one of our greatest artists, one of our most knowledgeable senior custodians, a founding member and long-serving Director of Maruku Arts. She is dear to all of us - family, friends, artists, and staff of many organisations throughout the NPY Lands of Central Australia. Mrs. Lewis sadly passed away last night in Mutitjulu.... With her vast knowledge of culture, history and her outstanding artistic talent, as well as her great humour she influenced the art-making in the central desert like no other. She had a unique way of telling her stories. Her paintings and walka boards depict life in the central desert her Tjukurpa and every-day life in the old days. Mrs. Lewis had her own, very individual way of creation. She invented new forms - she was the first Tjanpi artist who started doing sculptures; At Ernabella Arts, during a jewellery workshop, she created endangered animals to teach the children about them, while she carved unconventional punu artworks like decorated vases and teapots for Maruku. She pushed conventions of perspective and views of country in her paintings which she did for Ernabella Arts. In summary, she was never afraid of her individuality which made her body of work unique. Her artworks are held in many big collections around Australia and internationally, including the collection of Parliament House in Canberra. Her last 5m long masterpiece Niningka’s Tjukurpa is currently on display in the exhibition Open Hands: Tarnanthi 2020 at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family. Her passing is a tragic loss for all of us and she will be deeply missed. See more

06.01.2022 Rene has painted ngura (her country). Formed by the Creation Ancestors’ journeys across the country, their ‘dreaming tracks’ have been followed by countless generations of Anangu since. As well as landforms, they also created customs to be passed on and maintained over subsequent generations. 03.01.2022 This is ngura talitja or sand dune country. Series of curving lines are wind rippled sand dunes, sometimes intercut by the tracks of a Tjukuritja; the burrowings of animals; or the dry bed of a desert creek.
