22.01.2022 Top ten WORST things to say to your mechanic Number Dont say: Why not: Ten: My car made a funny noise last week, its not making it now, but it was really weird, is it safe to drive? Who knows? For a mechanic to assure you that your car is safe, he needs to spend a couple of hours checking it out, taking things apart and inspecting things from one end of the car to the other. You havent told him anything useful, like where the noise came from, what exactly it sounded like, ...what you were doing when it occurred. Nine: Change the oil? You mean Im supposed to change it? Im not kidding, someone actually said this to me after her car was towed in with the engine seized tighter than a . . . Eight: Id fix it myself, but I dont have the time. Men say this a lot, like it is something to be ashamed of not being able to fix their own car. The days when every man could do his own car repairs are gone forever. Seven: I cant leave it right now, but just let me tell you what happened and then you can tell me what is wrong, and Ill bring it back tomorrow and you can fix it. Yeah right. Mechanics have two things for sale, diagnostic ability and repairs. Of the two, diagnostic ability is worth much more. Dont try to scam me into diagnosing your problem for free. Six: Id fix it myself but I dont have the right tools. Yeah, and youd probably screw it up too. Five: Id fix it myself, but Im not sure just what is wrong. (This translates to: "Here, you do the hard part for me, and Ill do the rest, of course you wont charge me for the few minutes that it takes for you to diagnose the problem.) Four: Can I borrow a screwdriver, Ill be right outside. Never, and I mean NEVER ask to borrow a mechanics tools. If you absolutely must have the use of a tool, ask to rent it and offer a security deposit and be sure to get it back as soon as you are finished with it. This should probably be number one. Three: Just fix it real cheap, Im gonna sell it soon. (Yeah, right.) Mechanics have heard this one so often that it has become a standing joke in the trade. Two: You know, I wondered what that little red light was for. There is a reason we call them "idiot lights". Shame on you if you dont know what they mean. One: Could you just come out and look at something for a second? (The translation of this is "Im too cheap to pay you to diagnose my problem, so Ill pull this clever ploy to get you to do it for free.") See more

14.01.2022 RESPECT, Trust, and Appreciation Most of the time when you hear auto mechanic and respect together it is negative. You can make a really good case that people tend to not respect and appreciate this profession. But let me tell you something. ANY and I really mean ANY time someone asks a mechanic for advise, it is because they respect you! When a customer hands their keys over for me to work on their car, they trust me to do the right thing. When someone says Charles, sho...uld I make this repair? or Do you think my car is worth fixing THAT my friends means so much to me. It means that customer trusts me to help them make a choice. A choice that can affect them for the next 5 years or more. Remember, a car is the 2nd biggest purchase most people make. When someone is asking me for help. I take that to heart. Your customers, coworkers, and boss will not tell you everyday how much they respect what you do. But trust me kids, they do! Understand that a mechanic is the MOST valuable person in a dealership or repair shop. Think of how much money my dealer has spent on training me and the boys that I work with. The average cost of one training class is around $700. That is for each mechanic, at least once a year. That is no joke, and not an amount to sneeze at. That training is NOT just for the customers. It is NOT just so the dealer can say We have factory trained technicians. It is a perk of the job. If a mechanic leaves a dealership, they take all that knowledge with them. Tell me how that is not AWESOME! See, being a mechanic aint all bad. ;) I know my job isnt perfect, but it is a heck of a lot better than some jobs. Did I miss any perks of the job? Oh, I did, sometimes customers bring cookies,or the really rare(and my favorite) a nice craft beer or home brew. Ok, now did I miss any perks of the job? If you think that being a mechanic is awesome, go ahead and share this post. It means a lot to me when you do.
