06.01.2022 What do a space shuttle and a horse's rear end have in common? Railway infrastructure was used to transport space shuttle rocket boosters which limited the size they could be (the railroad gauge has a standard width of about 5 feet). This standard followed the width of tramways, which were built with the same jigs and tools used for building wagons. And the spacing used for wagons matched the spacing of wheel ruts on long-distance roads (the earliest of which were built by Ro...mans a couple of thousand years ago to fit chariots). And chariots were built to accommodate the rear ends of two horses. Therefore, the size of the rocket boosters is limited to the size of the rear end of two horses. This is a great tale of how the past can impact the future in unexpected ways. The only problem with this story? It's not true. While transport options can introduce difficulties and limitations, the world's best engineers have always found solutions and in this particular situation, they didn't have to alter their design at all. But it does raise an interesting point of how the infrastructure we build for today's needs can impact the future in ways we may not have even thought of yet. #space #engineering #spaceengineering #transportinfrastructure #spaceinfrastructure #infrastructure

04.01.2022 A (not so) long time ago in a galaxy (not so) far far away, it seemed almost impossible for space travel and people on our planet to take themselves (let alone infrastructure) to anywhere else but Earth. Today is #Maythe4th (yes, we are proud #MCU fans but we need to acknowledge #StarWars too) and we want to recognise the feats and major milestones in engineering that come with the cultural significance of today's date. It wasn't long ago that people started travelling into s...pace, and now we are looking at setting up #smartcities on other planets. Today we celebrate organisations that are contributing to the huge breakthroughs that are defining Australia's legacy in the #spaceengineering industry such as Australian Space Agency, Space Industry Association of Australia, and Delta-V Newspace Alliance just to name a few. We're constantly inspired by the work these organisations do to find creative solutions to problems that are out of this world. As we continue to grow, we are proud to offer services to our planet but are also really excited to support future space engineering projects in the wider solar system. #MayTheFourthBeWithYou
