24.01.2022 The team has added a few last minute parts to the CAC Wackett including the Fwd Cockpit floor and some engine controls in preparation for the Fraser Coast Wings & Wheels. The event is shaping up as a must see with plenty of Warbirds turning up, Mustang, Spitfire, Trojans, Yaks, Harvard, Winjeels etc. Please make sure you register and bring your printed out ticket to make things run smoothly on the day.

24.01.2022 A bit slow taking photos today, so no volunteers in them. Chris & Al completed the Warner Scarab Oil circulation system and James, Dan & Roy making more progress on the Stub wings.

24.01.2022 Take the time to watch The Hall of Memory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMxsogyys1c A powerful documentary paying homage to the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory with its stained glass windows, mosaics and Byzantine dome has been released by the Memorial. Thank you to John Meyers from Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum for sharing this brilliant video for us to share with you.

23.01.2022 The Maryborough Military Aviation Museum is a small museum, but its collection is growing rapidly, and this week it added a really important feature an honour... board with the name of 62 Royal Australian Air Force personnel from the Maryborough region who were tragically killed in service of their country. One of those names is Flight Sergeant Gerard Barbeler, a Maryborough man who lost his life in an air battle over Germany, on 16 March 1945, aged just 21 years. He was remembered by his brother Cyril, who unveiled the honour board this week on behalf of the 62 families whose loved ones are named on the plaque. While I was unfortunately unable to attend the unveiling in person, I was pleased to be able to provide $3,900 for the boards through the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service program. I thank Maryborough Military Aviation Museum president Jenny Elliott, president David Geck, and the committee for their work to ensure the names of our fallen heroes, like Flight Sergeant Gerard Barbeler and others from the Maryborough region, will never be forgotten.

23.01.2022 We have received a Display Cabinet filled with WWII era British & US aircraft, thanks to the Family of Pam & Con Loss of Howard. This fantastic collection of model aircraft will be kept together. Museum volunteer, Daryl has been carefully repairing some of the models which over time have collapsed undercarriages, etc. Some of these models date back to the 70's.

22.01.2022 A special Day today with the naming of two roads at Maryborough Airport, Frank Lawrence Circuit and Clifton Cornall Road.

21.01.2022 Ray and Damien from the MERG Amateur Radio group transmitting from our RAAF Maryborough site this weekend for the RAAF Centenary with the special call sign, VI100AF.

21.01.2022 Join us for the live stream of the Remembrance Day commemoration at the Australian War Memorial. The ceremony will include the laying of wreaths and a minute's silence, under COVID-safe rules with a limited number of guests.

20.01.2022 Very pleased to announce that copies of our Books "Fort Street Fighter Pilot" & "Five Maryborough Airmen" are now available in Fraser Coast Regional Council Library's. Both books have been written by local author, Lex McAulay for our museum. Copies are available for purchase from our Museum at 108 Bazzar St on Thursday's 8.30-1pm.

20.01.2022 Congratulations on the first edition of The Maryborough Sun

17.01.2022 The Engine guys have had more success with the removal of the very rusted Propeller Hub from the original Warner Scarab engine. Only two more very stubborn cylinders to go before we can split the crankcase halves. We are on the look out for a 2B20 Hub and blades to suit the Wackett, if anybody knows of one, please contact us.

17.01.2022 Success. The original Warner Scarab engine for our CAC Wackett Aircraft is finally fully disassembled. Let the restoration and reassembly begin.

17.01.2022 Today we unveiled two new Honour Boards to honour the local RAAF enlistment during WWII who were KIA. The boards were unveiled by Cyril Barbeler, brother of Gerard Barbeler who was KIA over Germany. The boards were made possible by a DVA grant and made by the Maryborough Men's Shed and the lettering done by Klein Sign's of Maryborough.

17.01.2022 This Thursday at 10 am, the new "Frank Lawrence Circuit" & "Clifton Cornall Road" street signs will be installed at Maryborough Airport to replace the unofficial "Airport Drive" & "Hangar North Road". Relatives of Frank & Clifton are most welcome to attend and any other interested individuals.

17.01.2022 Ex RAAF Instrument Fitter, Dan Holloway fitted a Vertical Speed Indicator this week, which was the last gauge we needed to complete our CAC Wackett Instrument Panel. Many thanks to Queensland Air Museum for the donation of this instrument. Looking for some light fittings and switch to complete the lower panel. #QueenslandAirMuseum #AircraftRestoration

16.01.2022 Very sad to hear of the passing of John Wedlock "Jack" 150104 on the 24th Oct 2020. Jack served with the RAAF during WWII as a Flight Mechanic, spending time at RAAF Station Maryborough during 1944. Jack went onto serve overseas in Bouganville with 5 Sqn and Lae with 33 Sqn. RIP Jack.

15.01.2022 It was a privilege to be joined by the family of Frank Lawrence at the unveiling of new road signs installed at Maryborough Airport to recognise his contributio...n to Maryborough's aviation history. Clifton Cornall is the other pilot honoured, who was tragically killed in a plane crash a day after arriving in Maryborough in 1944. Cornall is buried in the Maryborough War Cemetery. See more

15.01.2022 More success today with the Engine guys removing the rear crankcase on the Warner Scarab and then all the connecting rods. Just one retaining ring at the front of the engine to go.

15.01.2022 A big thank you to Matt Grigg who had a Wackett Tail Wheel and a Starter Switch surplus to his needs and passed them onto us at a very reasonable price. Thanks again Matt. Jim Fraser enjoyed removing the temporary wheel barrow tyre and fitting the original wheel.

14.01.2022 A quick video of the Wings & Wheels Event at Maryborough yesterday.

10.01.2022 All aboard! Visit Fraser Coast is known for its natural and historical heritage, and Kangaroo Bus Lines is bringing school students from South East Queensland... to experience it. Tour Director John Carpenter said while the tours to #visitfrasercoast and surrounding areas started in 2019, they were proving an increasingly popular alternative to Canberra trips due ever-changing border restrictions. A lot of schools achieved their educational goals because of the history that was on offer in #Maryborough, Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum and Gallipoli To Armistice, Maryborough's Anzac Memorial, he said. Most schools that travel on the tours come from the Brisbane region, travelling to Gympie, then Hervey Bay before visiting Maryborough. The kids don’t get bored, they’re learning stuff by rotating through the museums, Bond Store Maryborough, riding the Mary Ann and learning about Mary Poppins at The Story Bank Maryborough, Mr Carpenter said. Roughly a dozen schools had booked tours for 2021 and more were looking to book. Mr Carpenter congratulated Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum Director John Meyers and his staff for their role in facilitating the tours. Mr Meyers said it was great to bring students from Brisbane to Maryborough. He said the educational experience were extremely well received by touring schools, saying every tour so far had been successful. Mr Meyers expected the tours to expand into the future. We look forward to welcoming more students to the Fraser Coast in 2021!

07.01.2022 Some more CAC Wackett progress photos. Thanks to Mark Pilkington, we now have a replica ID plate for our Aircraft and Dan has also fitted the Engine Start Switch to the Lower Instrument Panel. Work has started on the manufacture of the top rails that run along both sides of the length of the aircraft.

07.01.2022 This is great news for everyone who have relatives who served in WWII.

07.01.2022 We have been donated an incomplete Norden Bomb Sight and a spare internal from G. Schott via Gary Dunne. If anybody has any parts we need to complete this sight, we would love to hear from you.

06.01.2022 Another piece of our CAC Wackett arrived this week, thanks to the South Australian Aviation Museum. This front windscreen was surplus to their needs and offered for sale to us.

05.01.2022 Some amazing work going on with the guys working on the display Warner Scarab engine. A new crankshaft is being made so the engine can be displayed to show the internal workings. Nice work Roy, Bernie & Lionel.

05.01.2022 Fantastic to show the relatives of Frank Lawrence around last week, which included Frank's daughter, Judy, Grandaughter, Heldi and Great Grandson, Oliver. Oliver has the aviation blood running through him as he gave our Avro Anson a good test flight. Frank Lawrence served in the RAAF as a pilot and was Maryborough's most decorated serviceman during WWII.

05.01.2022 This is great news. Both these roads will border our future museum at Maryborough Airport.

03.01.2022 Through funding received under the DVA Saluting Their Service Commemorations program we have created a Roll of Honour to identify and acknowledge local RAAF personnel who were killed in action during World War II. The 59 men listed on the Honour Board had a connection to Maryborough and the surrounding area through family, education or residence. An open invitation is extended to family members and the local community to join us for an unveiling ceremony of these Roll of Honour Boards on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 11am at our Museum, 108 Bazaar Street, Maryborough.

03.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who came out to visit us at the Fraser Coast Wings & Wheels today. What a fabulous day. One of the event visitors has lost a set of keys if any of our FB friends have found please let us know.

03.01.2022 A very special visitor today, Keith Miller. Keith at 14 years old was an apprentice Cabinet Maker in 1942, working at Aircrafts Pty Ltd in Maryborough, Qld. In his time there, he repaired Wackett and Anson wings from Aircraft that had been damaged in Maryborough and Bundaberg. Keith was able to rattle off many names from his time with the Factory. Following WWII, Keith went back to school to complete his education. Nancy Bates was on hand to interview Keith which will hopefully be in the newspaper soon.

02.01.2022 During our research we found this entry from the RAAF Station Maryborough Operations Record Book, page 41, dated the 3rd Sept 1945. "Royal Navy Hellcat forced down at Granville, Maryborough - no casualties" This is the only known crash of a Royal Navy aircraft that was based at RAAF Station Maryborough during WWII, if anybody has any more information regarding this incident please let us know. ... It is believed to have landed not far from the Granville School. See more

02.01.2022 Cadets from 216 ATC Squadron were given the opportunity to sit in our Avro Anson cockpit and learn about our CAC Wackett during a visit on the weekend. Many thanks to James Fraser and Daryl for giving up their time to inspire the next generation.
