24.01.2022 Good day again friends, Another week in our changing world comes to an end. I’m glad the we all have phones so that we can keep in touch, but I do miss the freedom to visit people and meet for coffee. ... I find that it takes a lot of discipline to do the right thing and abide by the decisions being made by the government for our protection. It is easy to convince ourselves that in Maryborough we are far from the main trouble spots, so we can bend the rules. But of course if we would do that, we potentially put ourselves and others in danger. So discipline must be exercised. No wonder self discipline is listed among the gifts of the spirit. God knows that we certainly need it. One day, we don’t know how soon, we will be able to meet again and then we will have lots of stories to tell over a cup of tea or coffee. In the meantime, we sit tight. Next Wednesday is commonly known as April Fool's Day. One American Judge said to an Atheist one day that April 1st was the religious holiday for those who denied God’s existence. King David began Psalm 14 with the words The fool says in his heart there is no God. But have you ever wondered why it’s really called April fools’ day? The most popular opinion is that April Fools' Day originated in France. A common myth is that that it is celebrated on April 1st because it’s related to Spring’s arrival where nature fools us with fickle weather. Others theorize that it has something to do with the Romans’ ‘Hilaria’ festival that celebrated the end of winter and the end of the Celtic new year festival. Whatever the origin, April 1 is observed as the April Fool's Day or All Fools' Day the world over. It's the day when people crack harmless jokes and pull foolish fun pranks on their family and friends. If you have any good yarns about past April fools’ day gags, like the one about the junior who was sent to the post office for a ‘long wait’ (weight). Maybe you want to share them. Pastor Jim

21.01.2022 Pastor Jim’s Pulpit Patter 29 March 2020 Psalm 130 A song of ascents. 1 Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD;... 2 Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. 3 If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. 5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. 6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. 7 Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. Psalm 130 was sung by the Hebrew people when they travelled to Jerusalem for their religious festivals. It reminded them how dependent they were on God and His presence in their lives. It is interesting to see how appropriate the words are for us today. On the journey to Jerusalem, the people left behind all that was considered essential to their daily lives and their daily routine. They were uncomfortable, and this discomfort caused them to think about more important issues. When the noise of daily life dies away, we listen to the cry of our heart. Note what the Psalmist thought about. Verse 2 -My cry for mercy he was fearful Verse 4 asked for forgiveness of sin faced the reality that he didn’t always live as God wanted him to. Verses 5 -6 Waiting for the Lord. On the journey, there was nothing to occupy his hands or his mind. He needed God to fill the void. How appropriate are these words to us today told to stay home. Told not to meet with our friends. No shopping. No libraries. No coffee shops. That could be a recipe for disaster, or it can be a great time to learn to be at peace in ourselves and with God. Read again verse 7: put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. If you are missing church, here is a suggestion for encouragement. Virtual church. Sunday morning. 11.25 - make yourself a coffee, or tea. 11.29am - turn your TV to the ABC and tune in to Songs of Praise. We may not be able to be together but we can be tuned in together to worship. Remember, we are all on this journey together. If you find it sometimes too lonely, please don’t hesitate to give me a call 0428 129 462. We can share each other’s burdens and make the journey lighter. Pastor Jim

08.01.2022 Leaders Council Executive update Greetings all. Everyone is feeling uncertain. We get it. It's not the life any of us imagined we would be having in 2020. Who would have thought 3 months ago that Church Services would be cancelled and Church life, and life in general as we know it placed on indefinite hold!... In these uncertain times, we want you to know that your health is top of our list of priorities, so we need you all to keep yourself safe, keep a good social distance and keep washing your hands. If you need assistance of any kind, please ring Pastor Jim or the Church Office. There are many people working behind the scenes to ensure we’re taking every step we can to still having a functioning church to come back to. This is another priority of Leaders Council. Just a quick update as to where we are at. The Maryborough Parish has three main sources of revenue building leases, donations and weekly offerings. o Leases - We are lucky in that West Chapel, Respite Lodge and Respite House (old Manse) continue to be leased out, however negotiations are being held with West Chapel lessors for rental relief. We have also been fortunate in being able to assist Community Lifestyles Agency (CLA) by agreeing to rent Wesley Auditorium and St Stephens Hall to them for emergency accommodation for some of their clients. o Donations some donations come in infrequently, however we continue to receive direct deposits into our bank account from people who have previously set these up as their form of giving o Weekly offerings Obviously weekly plate offering have ceased. To assist the church to continue to provide comfort and support and well as maintain our buildings, Leaders Council Executive would like you to consider how you can continue to financially support the life and mission of the Maryborough Parish. Perhaps you would like to set up a direct deposit? If you would also like to do so, information is below or if you are having difficulty please contact Pastor Jim or Church Office. Some people have placed their offering envelopes in the letter box in the church office door, We thank you for taking the time to do this. As a Parish we have also registered with the Government JobKeeper program but have not heard if we are eligible. Again, please keep safe, follow all Government requirements, ask for assistance if you need it, and above all, continue to pray for all our fellow humans. Jim Noel Denise

08.01.2022 A word from Chair - Maryborough Parish Leaders Council Hi Everyone, No doubt you would all agree that we are definitely living in very uncertain times. My days and weeks have changed dramatically and I’m not a stay at home girl by any means! However, like everyone I’m doing my best to be at peace with my lot.... I’m immediately reminded of those wonderful verses in Ecclesiastes, chapter3. To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under Heaven..... You know how it goes on from here, if not, look it up it is worth our contemplation. But do we now, in these trying times, need a slight variation on the original? - a time to distance and a time to keep in touch, - a time to isolate and a time to communicate, - a time to listen and a time to care, - a time to frequently wash our hands and a time to spray glen20, - a time to share and a time to take only my share, - a time to look out for each other and a time to pray together, -a time for housebound hobbies and a time to reflect. Just my thoughts at this time. Hope you are all comfortable and well. Blessings to all, Denise
