12.01.2022 Pigeon owners cry fowl over virus threat 2 Jun 2017, 4 p.m. LOCAL pigeon owners have expressed their concerns over a Sydney club bringing a flock of potentially virus-ridden birds to Bathurst this weekend. The Southern Racing Pigeon Federation will release birds in Bathurst on Saturday and leave them to race back to their Sydney homes.... But Bathurst pigeons fear some of the birds may be carrying the rotavirus pigeon disease that has spread quickly through flocks along the coast but has not yet made it west of the Blue Mountains. The Department of Primary Industries advises owners to avoid mixing pigeons from unaffected and affected lofts but one Bathurst owner told the Western Advocate he was worried about the local flock being contaminated. There is no vaccine for the virus, he said. All it would take would be for an infected bird to come into contact with our loft or do its droppings and we would end up with the virus here. Bathurst Regional Council spokesman Darren Sturgiss said he had tried to contact the Sydney club about its planned meeting but had not heard back from them. But he said there was not much council could do to stop the event going ahead given the DPI had not issued a ban on racing. We would be interested as to where the release point will be because if it is on council land we would like to be told about it as a courtesy, he said. We would request public liability insurance is in place as we would for any event to protect the Bathurst community against any claims. The Western Advocate contacted the Sydney Racing Pigeon Federation to ask about their plans for this weekend’s event but received just a no comment and a hang-up in reply.

05.01.2022 To all you pigeon lovers out there

01.01.2022 The disease in the present case of rotavirus presented as lethargy, watery-green diarrhoea, and crops filling up with water and mucous, progressing to death. Removal of the mucoid plug from the crop seemed to help the pigeons to survive. The clinical signs have now abated, but more than 100 pigeons, or 10% of the loft, have died since mid-January. This presentation is similar to that seen in lofts affected by rotavirus in other states. Pigeon owners are encouraged to be ve...ry careful about their biosecurity. Only admit pigeons that come from sources which do not have the disease and are careful of their own biosecurity, and isolate new or returning pigeons in a quarantine area for 2 weeks. These sources may include other lofts, races or shows. Ensure all birds are well housed, fed and watered with minimal stress. There is no vaccine available against rotavirus. Vaccination against APMV1 is still encouraged. It is important for bird keepers and others to continue to report any suspicious signs of disease. This will also allow the presence of notifiable diseases, including Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, to be investigated and ruled out. If you see unusual disease or high rates of sickness or death, you should report the incident to Biosecurity Queensland and seek veterinary help. Cases of rotavirus will not be quarantined or destroyed, but it is important to map any spread of these diseases into and within Queensland.
