18.01.2022 BUY A BIKE NOW OR YULE MISS OUT A global shortage of bicycles might see Australians miss out on their two-wheeled Christmas wishes. The bike boom that began during coronavirus restrictions earlier this year is continuing and those with a bicycle on their list of gifts to buy are being urged to reserve their purchase now or wait until at least 2021. ... Manufacturers around the world have the pedal to the metal to fulfil larger than usual import orders, but there is a backlog to fill and only weeks until Santa slides down the chimney. Bicycle Network CEO Craig Richards said people should visit their local bike shop as soon as possible. If you see a new bike at the top of a Christmas wish list, the time to head to the bike shop is now, otherwise you may miss out, said Mr Richards. People are used to putting in the early order for the turkey or seafood, but this year you should add a bike to the list of November jobs. Bike shops are reporting that many bikes on order are taking a long time to arrive in Australia and that stock may be exhausted soon. If you can’t get a new bike for a loved one, you could give them a servicing IOU or gift card to restore their old clunker back to its original glory, added Mr Richards. As well as increased demand from the COVID boom, global bike manufacturing has also been affected by Donald Trump’s increased tariffs on goods made in China. Bike companies had stopped building bikes in China but are now starting to return, despite the increased cost. Companies that have been able to continue to produce enough bikes have then been stumped by logistics issues, with shipping delays slowing down the flow of products from the factory to shop floors. While it is expected that Santa’s elves are working hard to assist bike companies in making some new bikes, the shipping delays have also made correspondence with the North Pole difficult. 17.01.2022 WALKING TOURS RESUME Free guided walking tours of Maryborough resume today for the first time since March while local tourist attractions the Bond Store and Story Bank are now open seven days a week again. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour encouraged local residents and visitors to sign up for a free guided walking tour to discover more about Maryborough’s fascinating and colourful past.... Maryborough was first settled in 1847 and is one of Queensland’s oldest cities. Many of Australia’s free settlers entered through the Port of Maryborough between 1859 and 1901, he said. Maryborough captures this history in its beautifully restored buildings and streetscapes. The guided walking tour is a way of discovering the city’s unique character and historic sites over the course of an hour to an hour and a half. Cr Seymour said it was part of Council’s COVID Safe plans to progressively reopen attractions like the Bond Store and Story Bank seven days a week as restrictions eased and demand increased. We are able to open for longer as we are welcoming back more of our wonderful volunteers who help us deliver a fantastic visitor experience in Maryborough’s magic Portside Precinct, he said. The Bond Store and the privately operated Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum allow visitors to step back in time and learn about our military and portside history, while the Story Bank showcases Maryborough’s unique link to Mary Poppins and the magic of storytelling. I encourage both residents and visitors to check out everything that is on offer at the Portside Precinct it really is a special place. The free guided walking tours resume today and are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays departing from Maryborough City Hall at 9am. Numbers are limited to six people per tour with visitors encouraged to wear enclosed shoes and comfortable clothing, and to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a sun smart hat. Bookings are essential via the Maryborough Visitor Information Centre at City Hall on 1800 214 789. More details about Maryborough’s Portside Precinct is available at www.ourfrasercoast.com.au

16.01.2022 'PARK KEEPER' NOW KEEPS WATCH OVER MARY Park Keeper Fred Smith has officially taken up permanent residence in the Pocket Garden at the Story Bank in Maryborough. The life-like statue of the park keeper, hiding a confiscated kite behind his back, is the latest addition to the Story Bank an interactive museum featuring the stories of P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins.... At the centre of the park is a fountain surrounded by mosaics of herbs, often mentioned by Travers in her Poppins books, and Fred, who is trying to keep order and enforce the by-laws such as no kite flying. The statue helps to bring the Mary Poppins stories to life, Councillor Daniel Sanderson said. It links to the statues of Jane and Michael sliding down the banister inside the Story Bank which are also made by Jane Estelle Bailey and Mark Snell from Lavaworx Art Studio. The Story Bank has been a great success; it has encouraged people to visit Maryborough, explore our history and the CBD. These latest additions ensure that it continues to grow and evolve so past visitors will want to come back. The pocket park was opened in August 2020 to mark the 120th anniversary of P.L. Travers birthday. Officially called Mary’s Garden it was named in honour of the Proud Mary’s: the group reinvigorated the link between Maryborough and P.L. Travers which lead to the creation of the Mary Poppins Festival. The park is an outdoor extension of the Story Bank and delivers on Mary Poppins promise that anything can happen if you just imagine, Cr Sanderson said. It is a great place to sit and reflect and let your imagination roam. Visitors will be able to scan a QR code to hear a special story about the garden and Fred Smith, ‘The Park Keeper Down Under’ written by fellow Maryborough author Ian Brown. 16.01.2022 NOEL HANSEN REMEMBERED For over 25 years, Noel Hansen presided over the chainsaw and woodchop arena in Maryborough. The gate was built by Lionel Whitaker, Cameron Wakefield, John Porter and Cr Denis Chapman. Cameron Wakefield has now taken on the role of Chief Stewart for the events. Cr Chapman said during the dedication presentation on Thursday night (20th May 2021) that Noel would always be missed. With this memorial, he won’t ever be forgotten. He said. 02.12.2021 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Bob Wicks, Fraser Coast Citizen of the Year! Bob reckons the award is just as much for his wife Narelle as it is for him.... The pair have been a powerhouse in the Fraser Coast business and sporting community for more than 30 years. We managed the business for three years before we bought it in January 1992, he said. Bob’s Tyres (Maryborough and Hervey Bay) has been synonymous with sport, of many kinds, and fundraising efforts for sports, community events, facilities, and charities. While probably best known for their works in the Hervey Bay Surf Club and Seagulls Rugby League Club, they have been involved soccer, scuba diving and helping build the Roy Rufus Artificial Reef off the eastern side of Big Woody Island. We liked sports because it was for the kids. IF the kids were happy and involved their parents would be happy and involved and that was good for the community, he said. Our aim was to make sure that the Fraser Coast grew and now to see it growing like it is and becoming a community is fantastic. 22.10.2021 COUNCIL'S AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS CANCELLED Fraser Coast Regional Council has cancelled it's Australia Day celebrations due to the rapid spread of the Omicron strain of Covid-19. Council had planned to hold an Australia Day Awards celebration at the Brolga Theatre on January 26 and a ceremony to congratulate all Australia Day Award nominees at the Memorial Hall in Pialba on January 19.... Council is working on a plan to hold a pared-down Citizenship Ceremony at the Brolga on Australia Day (January 26) with only the recipients and no guests. It is disappointing, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. It is very important that we take the time as a community to recognise the hard work and dedication of Fraser Coast residents who volunteer and contribute so much to ensure we live in a vibrant community. But we have to heed calls by the premier and health authorities to stay home unless absolutely necessary and avoid crowds to slow the spread of the Omicron strain of COVID-19. Council staff are contacting award nominees and citizenship ceremony participants as quickly as possible to make them aware of the changed circumstances. Other Australia Day celebrations will continue however including at the Maryborough Cricket Club. Full list of award winners in The Sun next week. The Maryborough Sun www.marysun.com.au

08.10.2021 ASSISTANCE GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE FOR MARYBOROUGH BUSINESSES FROM TODAY (Tuesday january 18) Extraordinary assistance grants of up to $50,000 are now available for primary producers, small businesses and non-profit organisations affected by the recent floods in the Wide Bay-Burnett region to help communities get back on their feet. The grants are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and will be ava...ilable to eligible applicants in the Fraser Coast, Gympie, Bundaberg, North Burnett and South Burnett local government areas. Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Llew O’Brien said the activation of extraordinary grant assistance is essential to help primary producers, small business owners and non-profit organisations in the flood-affected areas of Fraser Coast, Gympie, and South Burnett Regional Council areas to repair and rebuild. The announcement of these grants is a further example of the Australian Government working with Queensland to help these communities to recover, and we’ll continue to work to assess the damage should other assistance be required, Mr O’Brien said. Small businesses and not-for-profit community organisations seriously affected by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth are eligible to apply for the grants to help them overcome the damage. More than 70 businesses throughout the Wide Bay and Burnett region have been directly affected by the floods which caused damage to road infrastructure, impacting on supply chains; equipment, which leads to productivity losses, and goods, stock, feed and crops, causing loss of income, Mr O’Brien said. The economic impact of the severe rain and flooding will be felt for months to come. While the losses incurred in the floods have caused serious hardship in places, these grants can provide some vital support for severely affected primary producers, small businesses and community groups to help with cleaning up, repairing buildings and fencing, and purchasing equipment. For more information on grants for primary producers, small businesses and non-profit organisations phone Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority on 1800 623 946 or visit http://www.qrida.qld.gov.au.
