23.01.2022 The Richmond birdwing butterflies are back. A female was spotted laying her eggs on one of the Richmond birdwing vines (Parastolochia praevenosa) growing in the reserve. The female Richmond birdwing is larger than the distinctive green and black male. While the adult butterflies can feed on blossoms from a number of plants the caterpillars are reliant on the Richmond birdwing vine. The vine is listed as threatened in Queensland but is making a come back due to an amazing community planting effort.

22.01.2022 Meet Maleny artist Julie Hanrahan who created an exclusive hand-coloured linoprint design for the Rainforest Discovery Centre retail space based on our iconic strangler figs. You can find this beautiful design on tote bags and tea towels. Pop into the Discovery Centre to have a look!

21.01.2022 A gorgeous eastern yellow robin (Eopsaltria australis) singing it’s little heart out in the forest today.

19.01.2022 Entomological legend Dr Don Sands OAM presenting on the endangered Southern pink underwing moth (Phyllodes imperialis smithersi) at our most recent Cairncross Conversations program. The pink underwing moth larvae feed exclusively on the carronia vine (Caronia multisepalea), an uncommon rainforest vine now limited to small pockets of intact rainforest such as Mary Cairncross. To receive information about upcoming cairncross conversations events please email [email protected].

18.01.2022 A rare photograph of a strikingly-coloured Wompoo fruit-dove sitting on its nest. If you look very closely you'll see the chick peeking out in front. Both parents construct the very flimsy nest and share incubation and care-taking duties of their single chick. It won't be long now till this one fledges ! Grateful thanks to Herbie for sharing this fabulous image with us!

09.01.2022 Spring is definitely in the air and the forest is busy-busy-busy with nest-making, egg-laying, and chick-rearing at the moment! A common sight currently is the yellow-throated scrub wren nest. This delightfully delicate nest is often suspended from a lawyer cane and is made from roots, vine tendrils, leaf skeletons, moss and twigs, and lined inside with feathers. Hopefully this precarious position protects it from hungry reptiles looking for a quick meal. Many thanks to Herbie for sharing these stunning images with us. #loveisintheair #cleverbird #springtimeintheforest

01.01.2022 Thanks for the beautiful shot @barunglandcare This photo was taken at Mary Cairncross and was shared by Barung Landcare for biodiversity month! The Rose-crowned fruit doves are one of the key rainforest seed dispensers and are so important to our rainforests
