Few people actually knew in the past either, but they had access to so few varieties of food that they just ate the same things all the time. Whatever was readily available. Most hunter-gatherer societies of recent years are actually more ‘gatherer’, with only a little ‘hunter’. Many such societies eat up to 80% root vegetables, green vegetables or fruit, with only small amounts of animal foods such as insects, lizards, small trapped fish and the very occasional large hunting catch. 15.01.2022 Organic or grass-fed meat contains the same protein and iron and the same lack of fibre, antioxidants and phytonutrients as non-organic. High iron is one of red meat’s primary marketing points. But excess iron causes oxidative stress (this means that it ‘rusts’), requiring more anti-oxidants to mop up the resulting free radicals before they damage DNA. 15.01.2022 Anyone on a thyroid hormone or on insulin knows how hard it is to get these hormone levels right and how bad it feels to have them wrong (not to mention how dangerous). It is impossible to regulate hormones as well as our body can do altering levels minute by minute, day and night to keep us in a state of balance, or, homeostasis. 14.01.2022 I'm all for people putting in 100% effort to get well - if they have the lifestyle to sustain the effort. Otherwise, they will lose heart and give up. Worse, they'll tell others that "Nutrition and diet didn't work for me. I already tried it." But you may not NEED to put in 100% effort. Maybe 90% will be enough, maybe 75%!... There is a common saying that you only have to do an 80/20 diet. 80% strict, 20% off plan. To this, I say, "Rubbish!" That's just a feel-good, tickle the ears, don't upset anyone and withhold the truth cliche. It's a reasonable way for an already healthy person to maintain their health. But it's not usually much good for an UNhealthy person to RECOVER their health. Don't believe it! The other thing I hate to hear is `'Eat anything in moderation!" Arghhhh! I want to scream when I hear this. Here again, it's the stroking of well-meaning but ignorant people. There is often room for compromise in the journey of getting well. But what that is and to what extent is not something that can be applied across the board to everyone. It is individual, based on your own life - now and prior to now. That's what a nutritionist can help you figure out. And these chemicals are in higher amounts in processed meats than they are in cigarettes! So here are your choices:... Don't add nitrates to meat in order to stop this chemical transformation. 12.01.2022 When we see images daily of celebrities who are 50 with figures like 20-year-olds, it's tempting to redouble our efforts for weight loss by cutting an already low-calorie level even lower. But unfortunately, instead of rewarding our steely will power and reaching our target weight, this actually serves to slow weight loss down. How often have I heard people tell me, "I eat way less than so and so, but keep putting on weight!" If you haven't read my last "Weight L...oss Wednesday" post, it explains how the fat-muscle ratio affects weight loss success. Here we see it at play in another way. Yes, you can lose weight - without exercising - to a point. But there's not much evidence of long term success. Putting AS MUCH commitment into an exercise programme as into eating is going to make weight loss a lot easier and more successful. It's not just about burning calories - but about the need for muscle mass to assist your more controlled eating efforts. That's the problem with starvation diets - the body switches to cannibalising muscle instead of burning fat. And the lower your muscle mass, the less successful your long term weight loss efforts will be. Your local gym or a personal trainer can help you put together a programme. But remember - it's not just cardio you want - it's strength or resistance training. Inexpensive programmes you can do at home are Arena Strength or 12 minute athlete HIIT workouts on YouTube - both have apps too. 10.01.2022 Nitrates convert to nitric oxide which powerfully affects blood pressure - but the conversion doesn't happen if you are eating a (saturated) fatty diet. This is one reason why a high saturated fat diet causes heart disease. Because it means you get no heart benefits from eating any vegetables - or even from exercising. You can do all the Cross Fit in the world and add all the vegetables you like to your meaty diet - but it won't do you any good - because the fat in that d...iet cancels out the other good things. IGF-1 hormone sends the cells messages to start using those building blocks to grow and some of that growing has been shown to be tumours growing. High protein diets commonly have people eating animal protein at levels of 50% and even 70% of their diet or 2 3x the RDI. This is a huge risk factor for cancer. ...
