23.01.2022 Friends, I'm sure that like me, you've been following the COVID situation around the world and especially in India, where they continue to battle through this t...errible pandemic. I'm particularly mindful of the people of India today as we mark the death anniversary of one of Melbourne’s beloved daughters, Servant of God Dr Mary Glowrey or Sr Mary of the Sacred Heart JMJ. Mary was one of the first women to study medicine at Melbourne University and later became a founding leader of the Catholic Women’s Social Guild (now known as the Catholic Women’s League), whose work sought to bring about change in world affairs through prayer and action. In her early twenties, after a period of prayerful discernment, Mary travelled to India where she became a religious sister and continued her work as a doctor, caring for the country's poorest and most vulnerable. I know you will join me in offering our prayerful support to all our brothers and sisters in India at this time, praying for the country which our own Sr Mary so loved and served selflessly. : This sculpture is of Sr Mary and was made by local artist Darien Pullen. It was shared with me by the team at the Mary Glowrey Museum in Fitzroy.
22.01.2022 Sr Mary of the Sacred Heart JMJ (#MaryGlowrey) died at St Stanislaus Convent in Bangalore in the early morning of 5 May 1957, Good Shepherd Sunday. She was buried at St Patrick's Cemetery. The Archbishop of Bangalore, with the Archbishop of Hyderabad, celebrated the funeral Mass and performed the burial ceremonies in Bangalore. A Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Bishop of Guntur in Guntur on 6 May. Images: St Stanislaus Convent Bengaluru /Mary Glowrey Museum
21.01.2022 Eddie Glowrey, one of Mary's Glowrey younger brothers, ordained on 25 May 1918 became Dean of St Arnaud and Vicar Forane. The Glowrey family was very familiar with the town of St Arnaud, in Victoria's Wimmera district. Margaret and Edward Glowrey were married there in 1883, when it was the base for the vast Catholic parish. Mary Glowrey changed trains in the town on her way home to Watchem from Melbourne. 13.01.2022 Mary Glowrey's brother, Edward (Eddie) Glowrey, was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Ballarat on this day, 25 May, in 1918. The report in the Donald Times noted that St Patrick's Cathedral, Ballarat was crowded for the ordination of the Garvoc-born, Watchem-raised Fr Eddie. He was ordained by Bishop Foley. Fr Eddie's parents and all his siblings attended. His first Mass was celebrated the following day, Sunday 26 May, at Nazareth House, Ballarat. Image: Mary Glowrey Collection
13.01.2022 One hundred and one years ago, Dr Mary Glowrey was on her way to India, where she would begin her medical mission service. She undertook the sea leg on board the Orsova, a ship on the Orient Line.
12.01.2022 Today is the death anniversary of Servant of God, Dr Sr Mary Glowrey or Sr Mary of the Sacred Heart JMJ. Born in the Victorian town of Birregurra, this #Melbour...neCatholic woman devoted her life to the care of others, especially the poor. Mary worked as a doctor at St Vincent’s Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital before travelling to India where she felt strongly called to serve as a medical missionary. She is believed to have been the first Catholic religious sister to practise as a doctor and spent more than half her life tending to the sick, most of them vulnerable women and children, in Guntur, India. On this day, let us give thanks for the witness of Sr Mary, who like us would have walked the streets of Melbourne and visited St Patrick’s Cathedral, discerning how best she might serve the Lord. Let's also pray for the people of India those whom Sr Mary so compassionately served that our merciful Father may give them comfort and strength during this time of the pandemic. 09.01.2022 Mary wrote the following in a letter to her family on the first of May, in 1927: 'By today’s Advocate I see that Mr. J. B. O’Hara has died. I, and many others, owe much to him. I was very pleased to see that Rev. Dr. Collins who was at SMC when I was officiated at the grave, R.I.P.' Like Mary, Fr William Collins was was student at South Melbourne College when the poet and gifted teacher, John Bernard O'Hara, was its proprietor and headmaster. J.B. O'Hara died on 31 March 1927. 03.01.2022 Mary Glowrey shared in the numerous celebrations of her Australian family through the means available to her: prayer and post. In April 1943 she sent a poetic contribution to the 25th anniversary celebrations of her brother's ordination to the priesthood. Fr Eddie Glowrey was ordained and served in Mary's home diocese of Ballarat. She wrote: 'Did Mama receive the packet of manuscript printed matter and music with the verses for Eddie’s Jubilee? I shall pray much for him.' Photo* by Lorenzo Spoleti on Unsplash *Note: this is not a picture of the sheet music sent! This is yet to be located.
02.01.2022 On 21 January 1920, 101 years ago today, Dr Mary Glowrey left Port Melbourne aboard the Orsova, bound for Guntur, India via Sri Lanka. St Joseph's Convent, Guntur would be home for Sr Mary of the Sacred Heart JMJ, as she became known, for 36 years and the base for her pioneering medical missionary service. The Catholic Church has declared Mary a Servant of God and her healthcare legacy benefits millions in India annually.
