25.01.2022 Marymount Day flowers made by pastoral classes

25.01.2022 TERM 3 SPORT: This term our students in Years 7 9 were involved in intraschool sports on a Thursday afternoon. They competed in their Pastoral Groups in a variety of different sports to find the Champion Pastoral Group for their year level and the Overall Champion House. Congratulations to all the winning pastoral groups and well done to Bulimah for being the overall winners!

25.01.2022 Year 9 STEM: This term our Year 9 design and technologies class embarked on a STEM project where they designed, built, tested, modified and raced model solar boats, with the final aspect being the potential to join an international challenge. The model solar vehicle challenge is a competition where students design, make and race model solar vehicles (boats and cars). It is run at state and territory level and culminates in a national event for winners and place getters. Simi...lar challenges are run throughout the world and in recent years international teams have competed in state and national competitions. This term was spent testing our hand at developing a potential entrant into the national competition www.modelsolarchallenge.com.au. We held our own version of the race we have dubbed the Marymount Solar Boat Challenge today during our last lesson of the term. It was great to see the students boat designs finally tearing down the swimming pool. I would like to congratulate all competitors and staff that lent a hand as it made it a race to remember and the beginning of what I hope is a new chapter of STEM projects and collaboration in action at Marymount. Our finalists for the first inaugural Marymount Solar Boat Challenge were as follows: 1st Place - COSMOS - Zachary Wilson / Samuel Meurant 2nd Place - SMOKING GRIZZLY Griffin McKenzie / Ky Veech 3rd Place - ONE HULL OF A BOAT Oliver Udris / Brock Kraljevic A big thank you to Mrs Kylie Mathers for your event management and precise adjudication. Massive thanks also to Mr Kris Symons and Mr Aaron Turner for helping me reclaim my high school woodworking skills to prepare the Challenge trophy, it turned out beautiful. We had adjustments being made to vessels moments before the races took place and it made for a very exciting and enjoyable event for all in attendance. Mr Daniel Cousins Technology Teacher

25.01.2022 We currently have 8 Katandra and 7 Bulimah hats in SAO for collection. Congratulations to students in Allambee and Patanga who managed to avoid losing their hats this week.

Your dedication was so evident and made each and every attendee feel as special as they are to us. From that wonderful warm arrival with Matt Carroll, who blew everyone away with his vast knowledge of each student to the amazing back up technical team that provided seamless viewing to family and friends around the country. It was a totally professional viewing experience so appreciated by those unable to attend in person. This message of gratitude could literally continue for pages outlining all the amazing details brought to life so perfectly, however just like our succinct P&F Meetings we will be brief, honest and direct...Thank you Marymount College for giving our beloved Year 12s the farewell they deserved, a farewell they will never forget and always treasure. 24.01.2022 FOOD TECHNOLOGIES: Last week the Year 6 students from Marymount Primary School had the opportunity to cook and make a healthy chicken wrap in the Marymount College kitchen. The students had been learning about healthy eating, hygiene and food safety during the term with their teachers. This was a great opportunity for the students to put what they had learnt into practice. The students cooked the chicken and prepared a healthy wrap, which consisted of spinach, tomato, carro...t, cheese and a yogurt and tahini sauce. This was supported by Primary School and College teachers as well as volunteering hospitality students that assisted the students throughout the day. A big thank you to the hospitality students that helped, without your help on the day it would not have run so smoothly. All the students that passed through the kitchen were thrilled to be here and enjoyed the experience. When walking out the students left with smiles on their faces and a yummy dish in hand. On a personal note, the students were really well prepared and worked maturely during the day. I am excited to see this new cohort come to the College next year. David Grant Hospitality Coordinator

21.01.2022 Who knew this time last year what lay ahead?! Each opportunity to perform can never be taken for granted, as we only ever have a limited number of chances for these moments in our lives. Here are Marymount’s seniors placing second at the GC Eisteddfod in 2019.

17.01.2022 Psychology Go Health Go Griffith In a first for Marymount College, Year 12 Psychology students Jordan Girgis and Emily Crilly were notified of their successful entry into the Griffith University Go Health-Go Griffith, Psychology Course. Both students worked diligently over the past year completing additional tutorial materials and assessment pieces, including their final assessment piece; The Effect of Listening to Pop Music based on Context Dependent Memory. ... Their assessment showcased their knowledge of context-dependent memory and discussed evidence from their in-class student experiment, where the students designed, completed, analysed and presented findings. Jordan and Emily’s experiment results were statistically significant and found that students overall memory recall improved when their study and exam conditions are the same. Specifically, when students listen to pop music while studying and sit a test in silent exam conditions, they had poorer recall. These results are consistent with previous research on context-dependent memory, however, notably have found a new pathway. Jordan and Emily’s successful completion of this assessment piece and the Psychology course, awards them each 10 Credit Points, or the equivalent of completing one university subject at Griffith University. This is a massive achievement to complete this course in addition to the demands of Year 12. Congratulations Jordan and Emily! The future of Psychology looks very bright. Emma Ballester Senior Psychology Teacher

17.01.2022 YEAR 7 STAC CUP: At lunch on Thursday, the Year 7s and teachers competed in an ‘Escape Room’ challenge for the STAC Cup. After successfully solving ten riddles and putting together a sentence, that was the Year 7 theme, the teachers were victorious! The students had one room, the teachers another. Poppy and Cooper (the STAC reps) situated themselves in each room and ran the clues/answers.... After each successful answer, Poppy or Cooper provided a word and another clue. After a team has successfully guessed all 10 clues, the next process was putting the 10 words you were given into a sentence. I must mention the incredible work of the Year 7 STAC reps, Poppy Lea and Cooper Sankey. Not only did they come up with the idea, but they also found all the riddles, and put it all together in their spare time. To top it off, they excluded themselves from participating in order to be the ‘clue giver’ in each room. If you see them around the school, congratulate them on their amazing effort. They’re definitely two to watch for leadership in 2025. Special thanks to Mrs Kara Mallory, Miss Lauren Hutchinson, Mr Edwin Pereira, Miss Ash Jacks, Mr Tim O'Shea, Mr Geoff Browne, Mrs Nicky Browne and Ms Vivian Savage for being the successful teaching team. Jacqui Sheehan & Matt Hurley Head & Assistant Head of Year 7

12.01.2022 STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: Congratulations to Molly Sewell (Year 9) and Pascalle Foster (Year 8) on their selection in the Queensland Athletics Cross Country Merit Team. Both were selected based on their results at the recent Queensland State Cross Country Championships, where Molly placed 2nd and Pascalle finished 10th. ... Unfortunately, they don’t get to compete against the other states at the National Championships due to COVID-19, however it is still an amazing achievement for all the hard work the girls put in. Well done! Pascalle also recently took out first place in the 3km Flirt with Dirt race held at the end of August. Congratulations Pascalle! Mr Trent Balym Sport Program Leader

11.01.2022 NETBALL REPORT: The senior netball team started training to go to QISSN early this year but unfortunately due to COVID-19 QISSN was cancelled for 2020. With restrictions easing at the end of Term 2, the girls were able to continue their Tuesday night elite competition in Division 1. They have won approximately half of their games and it has been an excellent preparation for the Vicki Wilson Cup that will be held in Brisbane from the 3rd to the 5th of October. Sadly, there... are no spectators allowed at the event but hopefully some of the games will be live streamed. The girls are very excited to be back playing competitive netball and we are eager to see how well we might perform in October. The team will play 7 games across the first two days and if they make the top 4 of their pool of 8, they will go through to the finals on the Monday. Thanks, must go to the teachers (Ellie Rushworth, Kristy Guthrie and Cathy Cooper) who have helped train the girls and get them ready for competition. Also thank you to our team scorer and squad member Jade Murphy. 11.01.2022 Minecraft Update Our teams from the College Code Club that took part in the BCE Minecraft competition submitted their final. This has been an eye opening project for both student and mentor alike. This took a look a lot of teamwork and meeting at lunchtimes to plan their work. These students are to be commended for the way they have juggled school commitments meanwhile giving a lot of time and effort to their entries. Our Year 7 entry Team Endermen included Ben Marr, Lochl...ann Ardouin, Jamie Malloy and Cooper List. Their entry focused on ancient Greek theology where the player has to collect specific items to satify the Gods! https://youtu.be/6YQZame8F2o Our Year 9 entry Team Withers included Halle Wiblen, William Nguyen, Jappy Tantengco, Lucyana Gabriel and Douglas Cowan. Their Minecraft world focused on an activity that incorporates a time machine and Australian history. What a combination! https://youtu.be/X-46vZ2Rc9Y I wish both teams all the best in the competition now they have had to submit their entries. I hope your creations bring as much joy to people who play your world’s as I got from watching you make them. Well done guys! Mr Daniel Cousins Technology Teacher

05.01.2022 MARYMOUNT DAY: Year 12s last Marymount Day

05.01.2022 BASKETBALL: Marymount finish 6th The 2020 All Schools Basketball Tournament has concluded for our boys and as a community we can be extremely proud of their efforts, performances and conduct. Game 1: Marymount 46 v Annandale Christian College 30... A great start for the boys. They were in control for the duration and warmed into the tournament really well. Full squad effort. Isaak Maurer 10 points Ryan Pickering 8 points Nick Tyson 8 points Game 2: Marymount 41 v Citipointe Christian College 33 A tense encounter in which Marymount trailed for the majority before a massive 4th quarter to run away with the win. The sort of game that gives coaches grey hairs. The boys showed incredible resilience to stay in touch and then power away with it. Nick Tyson 13 points Isaak Maurer 11 points Ryan Pickering 9 points Game 3: Marymount 30 v Craigslea SHS 19 A match in which we led 19-3 at quarter time and were able to maintain control of the match. A full squad effort here to start the day. Nick Graham 7 points Ryan Pickering 7 points Damien Smith 4 points Game 4: Marymount 43 v Harristown SHS 16 A really dominant performance from start to finish. Last chance for boys to gel and combinations to click before playoffs. Best performance yet! Tom Browne 13 points Isaak Maurer 12 points Samual McCarthy 6 points Quarterfinal: Marymount 38 v Alexandra Hills SHS 65 The boys threw ‘the kitchen sink’ plus more at Alex Hills and just couldn’t recover from a 0-12 opening start. We were 2 players short for this fixture and our boys worked extremely hard to cover. A game in which we could take our hats off to the opposition and regroup for the remaining games. Tom Nicholson 13 points Thomas Browne 7 points Isaak Maurer 6 points 5-8 position playoff: Marymount 40 v North Lakes State College 28 With an 8 hour break between games, the team mustered up a phenomenal performance to beat a very well drilled team. An 11-0 scoring spree from the boys allowed them to lead and control the game. Ryan Pickering 11 points Damien Smith 10 points Tom Browne and Tom Nicholson 6 points Playoff for 5th spot: Marymount 29 v Corinda SHS 44 A real tactical battle against a team who had a lot more height on their side than us (hard to believe). The boys defended incredibly well and just lacked that ability to finish on offense. Nothing was ‘left in the tank’. Tom Browne 12 points Isaak Maurer 8 points Nicholas Graham 4 points Simon Rezo & Ryan Callaghan Basketball Coaches
