24.01.2022 Mum-of-three Rebecca is a volunteer cook at Lokirikipi nursery in Turkana, Kenya where 85% of children live in poverty and 50% don’t go to school. The nurse...ry is a simple building, surrounded by desert sands. A corrugated tin roof and a collection of branches provide the only shade from the scorching sun. Each day, Rebecca makes several trips to fetch water from the river, so she can prepare Mary’s Meals over an open fire. She didn’t get the chance to go to school herself, but Rebecca is happy to volunteer because she knows how important food and education are for children growing up in this remote community: I hope that all the children finish school. The food that Mary’s Meals is bringing is making them healthy.

School is important because it’s a place where children can gather to learn and play together. Khushbhoo often comes to school hungry, so the meal she receives at lunchtime makes a big difference: After reading and writing and playing I feel tired and hungry.
