19.01.2022 This week marks Homelessness Week 2020, and the theme is "Everybody Needs A Home". According to the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare, 42% of the clients seeking specialist homelessness services have experienced family and domestic violence. This year in particular illuminates the harsh reality of living on the street - in a time where we are encouraged to stay home as much as possible, those who cannot are most at risk. Whether or not we are dealing with a global health emergency, nobody should be without a safe place to live and shelter themselves. Homelessness Australia has partnered with Everybodys Home to call for a change to the housing system. To learn more about the campaign, head to: https://everybodyshome.com.au/ #HW2020 #BuildMoreSocialHousing #EndDomesticViolence
19.01.2022 Yesterday Liz Mackinlay, Chair of the Marys House Board was invited to speak at Holding Redlich Lawyers about the work we do at our refuge. We were thrilled to not only be announced as a charity partner of Holding Redlich in 2020, but also to be presented with a very generous donation at the conclusion of Lizs speech. We look forward to working with the passionate and engaging team at Holding Redlich and cannot thank them enough for their generous support! #CommunityPartners #Changemakers #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #MarysHouse
18.01.2022 Talk about celebrating in style! Jonas recently hosted a big birthday party with help from his friend Natasha at the Sydney Opera House. For this milestone event Jonas asked guests to donate in lieu of a gift. At the end of the party Jonas friends had donated an incredible total of $20,000 but Jonas was not done yet! As a birthday present to himself, Jonas decided to match these donations bringing the total raised for Marys House to $40,000! Wow! Our Fundraising Officer, Emma and Chair of the Board Liz Mackinlay recently met with Jonas and Natasha to thank them for all their support. A huge thank you again to Jonas, Natasha and all their friends that donated to Marys House - we cannot do the work we do without your support. #CommunitySupport #EndDomesticViolence #MarysHouse
17.01.2022 Today the team at Marys House is celebrating the third annual Wear Your Dangerous Females T-shirt Day! This is a day created by Dangerous Females which encourages you to wear some of their fabulous merchandise - jumper, tee, cap or tote in celebration of being part of an empowered community advocating for change in the domestic and family violence space. So far in 2020, there have been 25 women killed in Australia due to domestic violence. We know that for many women in thi...s position, taking the first step is the hardest, especially in a pandemic where many women feel isolated from their support networks and loved ones. So thats why services like ourselves and others exist to provide these women with trauma informed care and support during this time. Dangerous Females is an empowering collective who donate 100% of the profits from their merchandise to support womens refuges and domestic violence services. So today, head over to the Dangerous Females page and get yourself a t-shirt that makes a powerful statement! It is not just a shirt; it is a conversation starter and a message of a support. #EndDomesticViolence #wearyourdangerousfemalesteeday #DangerousFemales #Community #DV

14.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Dialling 55 on a Triple Zero call will alert emergency services a caller cannot speak on the phone. If you or someone you love calls 000 and is unable to respond to the operators greeting of Emergency. Police? Fire? Ambulance? the call is automatically transferred to an interactive voice response (IVR). The IVR will ask the caller to press 55 if they require emergency help. If the caller does press 55, the call will be connected to either the police or... ambulance. If the call goes unanswered an emergency service will attempt to call back. If the call back is not answered, a patrol car may be sent to the address associated with the phone number, usually the callers billing address. Police will use the address for the service (which would usually be either your home or billing address). This means it is important to make sure that your telco has the most up-to-date address details for your phone services. #SafeAtHome #EndDomesticViolence

05.01.2022 A new parliamentary inquiry into domestic violence has been launched this week, we support and welcome any action taken that will keep women and children safe from family and domestic violence. We acknowledge there have been gaps in historical inquires when key recommendations to keep women and children safe have not been followed through, particularly around the family law system. We hope to see these gaps investigated and addressed in future inquiries. #EndDomesticViolence #DV https://www.abc.net.au//new-national-inquiry-into/12307772
