25.01.2022 After 6 long months cricket returned to the Yarra valley on Saturday for round 1 action. As in seasons past, play was set to be a to and fro between sides as pl...ayers looked to shake off the rust and put their best foot forward to start the season. In DJSS, new boys Gruyere set out to show they can take it up with the best as they took on Healesville at Gruyere recreation reserve. Gruyeres evergreen M. Tilney (2/30) heaped pressure on Healesvilles order early with the wickets of M Minney and D Senior, when R Gibson bowled T Poynton the score was 3/26 and Healesville were searching for someone to stand up and steady the innings. Opener B Damrow was joined by B Wallace and together they set about putting together a useful 30 run partnership to steady the innings, unfortunately the pair fell either side of drinks right when they began to threaten a larger partnership. Fortunately for Healesville, captain Ash hamer(73) set about scoring a brisk half century, combining with J poynton (47) for a century stand before cameos from G Poynton and D Ebbels added the finishing touches to the innings to take the total to a formidable 245 Chasing a total above 200 is always going to be a challenge and Gruyere needed an innings of substance to match hamers effort if they were going to have a chance of chasing the total. Openers Tilney and A Waixel were watchful early, well aware that a good start would be crucial in this innings, however when Tilney fell Waixel felt the time was right to up the scoring rate. Despite regular wickets through the innings, Gruyere always looked a chance while Waixel stood at the crease, and as he began to strike regular boundaries the total began to look smaller and smaller. S North (4/34) was the man to remove Waixel for a well made 82, and with further wickets through the innings Healesville were able to manage Gruyeres scoring rate to restrict their total to 7/195 to take the game by 50 runs. Wandin started the year with victory against Yarra Junction with a strong collective batting effort. Wandins openers did well to see off the new ball threat seeing the first wicket fall at 37. S Falkingham (57) then met J Bromiley (57) at the crease and they would not be parted until after the drinks break with the score at 112. With the loss of his partner Falkingham was joined by T Thorne (52*) for another half century stand and together they set up the innings for the middle order to make a late charge to pass 200, late hitting from B Edwards (24) provided excellent support for Thorne as he reached his half century in the late stages of Wandins 6/235. If a score can be made it can be chased, and Yarra Junction would have believed they have the firepower in their order to chase a large score on the traditionally fast Wandin North reserve. Scoring close to the required rate, the Eagles batsmen kept themselves in the game right through the early overs of their innings and despite early wickets to T Hall and recruit S Thompson (2/44), would have fancied their chances at drinks. Number 4 M Malik was brutal on the loose ball and looked determined to take the match down to the wire, unfortunately he lacked any noteworthy support as the lower order fell to the bowling of E Alderman (4/30) to leave Malik with too much to do. When he was the last man out for 85 there was still 6 overs left in the Yarra Junction innings and although the eagles were still 60 runs short of their target one would think an even batting display with multiple contributors would have taken them very close to a victory. In both RAFT Blue and Gold, runs were the order of the day as games were won off the back of a series of big individual innings. Coldstreams D Sharp (132) struck a stunning century against a hapless Healesville attack, sharing a double century opening partnership with young gun M Pezzimenti (88). No matter who bowled Healesville simply could not find a breakthrough until late in the innings, as the tiring batsmen searched for quick runs, the only positive for Healesville being A Pearce (4/24) as he collected late wickets. Healesville needed something special to chase such a significant score and were simply no where near the mark, M Wallace (46) and B Mackey (28) the only signs of resistance as they were swept aside by A Wheelan (3/36) and J Khan (3/3) to be all out for 89. Yarra Junction hosted Wandin at the lush Yarra Junction oval in another game where the side batting first dominated the contest. Yarra Junction struck a strong total of 6/218 featuring half centuries to R Turner (71*) and A Vandervlugt (58*). Healesville were able to limit the batsmen early before being unable to restrict the damage as the batsmen looked to accelerate after the drinks break. In response Healesville were never really in the chase, a slow start coupled with regular wickets meant the bloods were playing catch up the entire innings. 56 to D Marshal the only substantial score made as B Hawkins (2/19), D Lever (3/37) and E Clarke (2/11) shut down the Healesville innings. At the picturesque Wickhams reserve Launching Place took on Warburton in a game that put some of the young talent in the Yarra Valley on display. Batting First, Launching Place found the going tough early as regular wickets to D Cerveri (2/15) and N MacDonald (3/32) took a toll on an initially good run rate, middle order pair D Turner (30) and S Parker (41*) the only two to pass 20. Launch suffered further losses late in the innings with B Neilson (2/27) and were eventually able to scrape together 151 thanks to a 41 run 10th wicket partnership. The Burras began their chase rapidly, a belligerent A Nelson looking to take the attack to the opposition, dealing in 4s and 6s he brought up a rapid half century before being dismissed for 65 within sight of the drinks break. From there middle order pair MacDonald (32*) and R Gribbock (33*) saw the chase to the end as Warburton reeled in the score with more than 10 overs to spare. In the final match of the round Marysville traveled to Woori Yallock to take on the Tigers at home. Batting first Marysville found scoring tough as economical bowling netted 2 wickets early on. L Ronald held the Marysville innings together with a trio of 30 run partnerships that kept the scoreboard ticking. A late hat trick to A Rowe prevented any late fireworks as Marysville batted their overs to reach a disappointing 118. Woori Yallock have made a habit of brushing aside small totals in recent years and this was no different, the top order failed to fire but succeeded in seeing off the new ball for minimal losses, before a brutal display of power hitting from H Smith (66*) and J Young (39*) chased down the score with half the overs still in hand and 7 wickets in the shed. Next week sees the first round of T20 action in the Yarra valley with double header matches scheduled to start at 1 and 3:20 at both Yarra Junction and Healesville so for a fun day out head down to your nearest game and make sure you’re ready for a crowd catch! 20.01.2022 2 day cricket returned to the Yarra valley this round with rain putting a dampener on some games last week, this week sides had their chance to push for a win i...n dry conditions. In DJSS Healesville traveled to Wandin in a game where the home side had the upper hand after day 1. Batting first Wandin openers were cautious early before opening up their scoring rate. Healesville opener Jordan Poynton fought back well to have the partnership ended and both openers in the sheds 10 overs into the innings, both batsmen out bowled as Poynton demonstrated the value in attacking the stumps early in a batsman’s innings. Unfortunately for the bloods, the next Wandin pair, Shaun Falkingham and Tim Thorne, were resolute in defence and confident in attack as they put on a near 150 partnership at a quick pace. Both batsmen notched up half centuries before being removed shortly before stumps were drawn, Poynton returned to take another wicket to be the clear best of the Healesville bowing lineup while Max Minney chipped in with a late wicket to take some momentum into day 2. Returning on day 2,Wandin were able to put the foot down and score rapidly, wickets in the shed meaning they were able to maintain nearly 6 an over as they prepared to declare. Jordan Poynton would continue to be a thorn in Wandins side through the innings as he collected regular wickets to finish with a 6 wicket haul to help minimise the damage caused by the Wandin batsmen as they declared at 9/276. Chasing a large score Healesville were always going to need a couple of significant partnerships and unfortunately Wandin were able to take regular wickets to stop Healesville from ever really being on track for the target. Ethan Alderman was impressive early, dismissing the top 4 batsmen to set the tone for the innings. Ash Hamer was solid through the back half of the innings, striking a half century as he tried to keep his side in the game, unfortunately for Healesville, Stuart Thompson was too good late in the innings as he returned to take the last 4 wickets and wrap up Healesvilles innings for 134. An impressive victory for Wandin as they shape up to be the team to beat early in the season, they would be glad to see both batting and bowling units firing coherently. Healesville can take a way from this game that some of their players are still putting strong performances up, and if they can find support there will be more results go their way and there is still plenty of cricket to play this season. In RAFT Blue Healesville were able to bowl 39 economic overs at Wandin last week who finished the day 5/55. Scott Fawdry was brilliant with the ball, taking 3/9 from 18 miserly overs to choke the Wandin batsmen. The only batsman to even look somewhat comfortable being josh Hamilton, who stood unbeaten at stumps with his side 5/55. Returning on day 2 Fawdry continued where he left off as he took 3 more wickets for a single run to finish with impressive figures of 6/10 off 21 Overs as Wandin were bowled out for just 71. In reply Healesville were determined to chase down their target, passing it 3 wickets down before putting the foot down to record some handy additional runs. Andy Jakubowicz made 52 as Healesville finished 9/173to record an impressive victory. After heavy rain last week the game between Yarra junction and Coldstream reverted back to a 1 day game this week. Batting first Coldstream lacked any large partnerships, However were able to maintain a respectable 4 an over for most of the innings. Caleb Hrabe was good with the ball taking 3 wickets while there were no large individual scores Coldstream had several contributors to take their score to 6/136. In reply Yarra Junction were able to maintain a steady scoring rate, ray turner proving the steady hand as the batting flourished around him. Coldstream were able to take 2 wickets before Matt Robinson joined Turner and together they put on an unbeaten 70 run partnership to take their side to victory with Turner sitting 52 not out. Raft Gold saw ladder leaders Woori Yallock dismantled by Marysville in a 1 sided affair at Gallipoli park. Woori batted first and Tom Goldstraw took 3 wickets early to have Woori teetering at 5/41. Enter Chris Ronalds who came in and mopped up the Woori Yallock tail in no time with 4 wickets for just the 1 run to see them all out for a paltry 43. Marysville made light work of the chase passing the score 1 down with Ben Stewart hitting 25 to record a 9 wicket victory. Launching place traveled to Wesburn to play Warburton in their rd 6 clash with Warburton batting first. Openers Shane Abblitt and Josh Sharp got Warburton off to a solid start, taking them past 40 without loss before a change of bowlers saw a change of fortune for launching Place. As has been the case so far this year it has been launch’s slow bowlers who have done the damage, this week Clint Sharman took 3 wickets through the back half of the innings including that of young Sharp shortly after reaching his half century. Late hitting from Daniel Geary (52) took Warburtons score to 4/190 from their 40 overs. In reply launch were in trouble early with both openers back in the sheds , and another flurry of wickets saw launch 5 for well before the drinks break. Stuart Parker combined with Lenny Jenkins to put their side back on track with an 80 run partnership before they both fell in quick succession to blow the game wide open again. Fortunately for launch a Jarred Darkin cameo brought the winning runs to see launch over the line with 3 overs to go. In 1 day grade Jake Neale again led poweltown to a win, this time over Healesville despite 50 from Joshua handasyde, 50 to Paul Osborne led Yarra junction to a win over Wandin and both launch 2nds and ‘3rds lost with Coldstreams Harvey wheeler hitting 42* and Yarra glens tommy Davey and Shane Fordham hitting half centuries. The Yarra valley is looking for players to field a senior country week side again this year and is asking players to express interest to their clubs so we can get a squad together for the carnival between Monday 17th February and Friday the 21st. The Yarra valley is always looking for umpires, please contact Greg Mitchell 0418341154 or Keith Thompson 0408353076 if you are interested in officiating the weekly action. 02.01.2022 Strachan shield this week saw Yarra Junction put on a clinic against Gruyere in the first of three T20 games to be held in coming weeks. Batting first, Yarra Ju...nction were unfortunate to lose both openers early credit to Gruyeres M Tilney (2/17) however L Horsfield and M Mallick were able to put on a careful partnership to guide the Eagles away from any danger of a collapse. Rotating the strike with clever singles the pair were able to put their side in a position to launch in the back half of the innings and when Mallick lost his wicket looking to raise the tempo A Cowan(45*) was able to bat without the need to hold back on his attacking instincts. Gruyere would not take another wicket as Yarra Junction arrived at a total of 151 with Lorsfield reaching his half century in the final over of the innings. Gruyere made a less than ideal start when danger man A Waixel was out for a golden duck. Never really looking in the chase Gruyere lost regular wickets throughout their innings thanks to K Bomford (3/20) and R Matthews (3/18), captain J Carroll(23) played a mature knock through the middle overs to try to rebuild the innings however was lacking a willing partner to take the chase deep into the innings. In the end it was a simple task for the experienced N Bark(3/3) to clean up the tail and take Yarra Junction to an 86 run thumping of the Scorpions. Fresh off wins last week Healesville and Wandin would both be determined to show their strength and take top spot early in the season, and a closely fought game ensued as both sides strived to be leading the pack at the end of round 2. Batting first, the bloods lacked significant contributions from the top order as Wandin kept the innings under control early. Middle order duo D Senior(33) and A Hamer(36) were again the shining lights of the innings as they fought off D Thorne(2/8) and S Falkingham(2/22) to keep the innings on track, the middle-lower order combining to keep the scoreboard ticking until the close of innings at 7/145. After a dominant display with the bat last week the bulldogs would have known they are capable of chasing a total of this size with one large partnership. However, Wandin batsmen were forced to take the harder path as the Healesville bowling attack took regular wickets to maintain pressure and not allow the bulldogs to get set. Contributions from T Thorne(33) and D Thorne (30*) were matched by excellent bowling from J Poynton(2/10) to keep the contest in the balance through the middle of the innings. Crucial late wickets were not enough as D Thorne was able to safely see Wandin over the line as bowlers at the death proved expensive for Healesville Both RAFT Blue and Gold also had T20 matches this week, a range exciting power hitters taking centre stage and demonstrated how to clear the boundary in each game. Coldstream started well against Yarra Junction, rotating the strike they were able to ensure the scoreboard ticked along against tight bowling. Coldstreams experienced C Dikschei(50) the main contributor through the middle overs he was well supported by young M Pezzimenti (24) early on before the rest of the Crocs order contributed despite regular wickets to D Lever(3/36), G Thompson(2/22) and T Gaskett(2/23) to take the total to 7/129. Yarra Junction would have been pleased to be chasing a sub 130 score and they quickly set about starting their chase. Into the action early, Gaskett set about anchoring the innings while still scoring at a respectable rate, he was able to maintain a degree of control of the chase despite several wickets to Dikschei (4/24). 31 from M Hammond towards the middle of the innings the main supporting act as Yarra Junction were guided to a well played victory to see the Eagles take two from 2 in their double header at home. Healesville batted first against Wandin in the second match queens park looking to post a score, and were met by an early challenge from H Lamont(3/27), his tidy line and length earning several early breakthroughs. J Cooper(38) and J Betts (21) were able to bat well through the middle overs to set up the innings and lower order contributions saw the innings close at7/136. Chasing a challenging total Wandin were always a little behind the required run rate. D Marshall (39) doing his best to hold the innings together it would always be difficult without noteworthy support from at least one other batsman, and as regular wickets fell M Jackson(3/12) and C Anderson (2/17) maintained the pressure and Wandin were unable to put together a match winning partnership to see the innings close at 8/119. In the double header at Woori Yallock, Woori batted first against Warburton aiming to set up a large score to defend. After a solid opening partnership K Cantwell(29) and J Young were able to score quickly through the middle overs to set the middle-lower order the chance to explode in the final overs. Unfortunately the Tigers lower order proved to be nothing more than a party popper C Darwall taking 3/23 as the innings petered out to 9/139 when a larger total threatened. A Nelson(41) is showing ominous early season form, his boundary laden innings featuring four 4’s and as many maximums, however once he was dismissed the Burras batsmen were unable to continue the momentum. J Sharp(25) the only other batsman to pass 15 as the Tigers bowlers shared the wickets to take a 28 run victory. After a loss in rd 1, Launching Place put on a dominant display against Marysville, who struggled against a polished bowling attack. A rapid opening spell from J Turner and T Darkin putting Marysville on the back foot early, before R Christie(3/14) ripped through the middle order with only C Piggot(33) standing up for the Devils. It was a simple task for M McConnell(3/10) to trap the tail and wrap up the innings for 75. Getting off to a quick start C Sharman dominated the opening partnership before being caught behind off C Ronalds(1/16) for 17, unfortunately this would be the only wicket to fall as J Turner(40*) and J Birnie(21*) saw the chase to the end off just 9 overs. In the one day grade hoddles creek were led by S Robertson(50*) and G Derix(44) to dominate Warburton despite C Newell(49) with L Hoorn(3/10) and P Healey(3/11) leading the bowling. Launching Place 2nd XI made difficult work of a small run chase, going from 3/85 to 8/95 to leave the game in the balance before just stumbling across the line J Pegg(34) doing most of the work. A strong Poweltown side had a young Launching Place 3rd XI at their mercy, sharing the wickets as they ripped through the order to be all out 37 then chasing the score quickly to finish 2/51.
