15.01.2022 Who are the Green Shirts Movement Australia (GSM) Part 1 The systemic problems that show the need for GSM The issues for regional areas may vary from State to... State at any given time, but there is a commonality with, if not the cause of the problem, with why it isn’t being solved. A lot of this stems from firstly urban/ rural divide and secondly that Australia is an affluent nation. Most people no longer have a connection with production that comes from the soil or the sea and with such a limited knowledge base, they can fall prey of misinformation. They no longer need to get their hands dirty and have become sensitive to the more robust aspects of nature. Except for the very poor in our society, most Australians don’t have to worry about survival from day to day which affords the luxury of exploring less tangible concepts. Nothing wrong with this unless it is done in a vacuum that lacks a rounded knowledge and context. There aren’t too many radical animal liberation fanatics in the very poor countries with a high rural population. Where the problems really manifest themselves is through politics. Generally a political party is elected from localities where the concentrations of people are the urban areas. Political parties will therefore look after these places & are unlikely to get them off side by saying that they are wrong about a rural issue. Then add to the political mix those with a radical agenda that are not friendly to farmers, commercial fishers, foresters or truckies carrying freight. Everyone rightly so believes in good conservation & the protection of certain areas in well managed National Parks. But these same environmental outcomes are now being transferred to farms, fishing areas & forests by environmental zealots who use dodgy science and emotive misinformation to achieve political outcomes they desire. Then multiply all this by devious political leaders & strategists who abuse an urban/ rural divide and the desire of people to feel good saving the environment, by vilifying the regional productive sectors as environmental vandals and if elected, they will fix it all. This was pioneered by the former Qld Premier, Peter Beattie. The result over the years is a tangle of red & green tape that makes it very difficult for regional business. If this isn’t bad enough in recent years have seen a further distortion of the political process by the rise of incredibly well funded political activism with the prime example being Get Up. The different activists mentioned above have been effectively operating in Australia for a few decades. There is misinformation about regional productive industries that have been repeated that often that they are taken as fact. There has been no such organisation organisation directly working at addressing these problems on behalf of farmers, commercial fishers, foresters, freighters, remote aboriginal communities & regional businesses. The problem is not industry specific but community wide. Lastly, it is not our intention to add to the problem of urban/ rural divide. We are not saying that what has occurred is necessarily the fault of individuals who live in our cities. Most people are sympathetic with farmers & others but lead busy lives, with enough problems of their own, they are unaware of this shift in our society and the impact it has caused.
