23.01.2022 How Fast Food Delays Pregnancy A new study (based on data from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland) found women who eat more fast food and less fruit take longer to get pregnant, compared to women who eat fruit every day. In fact, women who ate fast food four times a week were twice as likely to be infertile. Published in Human Reproduction journal, the study revealed women who ate junk food four or more times a week took almost a month longer to fall pregnant. And wom...en who are fruit less than three times a month took half a month longer to conceive compared to women who ate fruit three or more times a day. Small modifications in dietary intake may have benefits for improving fertility," said first author Jessica Grieger from the University of Adelaide. Our data shows that frequent consumption of fast foods delays time to pregnancy. We recommend that women who want to become pregnant should align their dietary intakes towards national dietary recommendations for pregnancy. How was the discovery made? Data from over 5,500 pregnant women was used in the study. At prenatal appointments, midwives recorded information about the women’s diet, such as fruit and vegetable intake, and fast food consumption what they specifically ate and how often. After analysing the data, the researchers found the risk of infertility among women eating the lowest amount of fruit rose from 8% to 12%. Women who ate take away four or more times a week had an increased infertility risk of 16% (up from 8%). 19.01.2022 Regular cannabis use shrinks the brain but increases the complexity of its wiring, a study has found. To some extent the loss of brain volume is balanced by larger numbers of connections between neurons, scientists discovered. But they warn that those who take the drug for too long are likely to suffer damaging effects. The brain scan study of cannabis users is one of the first to investigate the drug's long-term neurological impact in living people.... Dr Sina Aslan, from the University of Texas at Dallas, US, co-led the research. "What's unique about this work is that it combines three different MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) techniques to evaluate different brain characteristics," she said. "The results suggest increases in connectivity, both structural and functional that may be compensating for grey matter losses. Eventually, however, the structural connectivity or 'wiring' of the brain starts degrading with prolonged marijuana use." The team studied 48 adult cannabis users aged about 20 to 36 who were compared with a group of matched non-users. On average, the cannabis users took the drug three times a day. Although tests showed that regular users had lower IQs than non-users, this did not appear to be related to brain abnormalities. The scans revealed that smoking cannabis every day was associated with shrinkage in the orbitofrontal cortex region of the brain, which is involved in mental processing and decision making. It also influences responses to rewards and adversity, and is strongly linked to empathy - the ability to sense other people's feelings. Neuroscientists believe damage to the orbitofrontal cortex may underpin some forms of psychopathy. Earlier onset of cannabis use induced greater structural and functional connectivity, the research showed. The greatest connectivity increases occurred as an individual started taking the drug. After six to eight years of continually taking cannabis the increases in structural wiring declined, but users continued to display higher connectivity than non-users. This may explain why chronic, long-term cannabis users appeared to be "doing just fine" despite having smaller OFCs, said co-author Dr Francesca Filbey, also from the University of Texas.

16.01.2022 A lack of exercise could be killing twice as many people as obesity in Europe, a 12-year study of more than 300,000 people suggests. University of Cambridge researchers said about 676,000 deaths each year were down to inactivity, compared with 337,000 from carrying too much weight. They concluded that getting everyone to do at least 20 minutes of brisk walking a day would have substantial benefits. Experts said exercise was beneficial for people of any weight. ... Obesity and inactivity often go hand in hand. However, it is known that thin people have a higher risk of health problems if they are inactive. And obese people who exercise are in better health than those that do not. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, attempted to tease out the relative dangers of inactivity and obesity. Obese v inactive Researchers followed 334,161 Europeans for 12 years. They assessed exercise levels and waistlines and recorded every death. "The greatest risk [of an early death] was in those classed inactive, and that was consistent in normal weight, overweight and obese people," one of the researchers, Prof Ulf Ekelund told BBC News. He said eliminating inactivity in Europe would cut mortality rates by nearly 7.5%, or 676,000 deaths, but eliminating obesity would cut rates by just 3.6%. Prof Ekelund added: "But I don't think it's a case of one or the other. We should also strive to reduce obesity, but I do think physical activity needs to be recognised as a very important public health strategy." Prof Ekelund, who is based in Norway, is into cross country skiing and clocks up at least five hours of vigorous exercise each week. However, he says all it would need to transform health, is brisk walking. "I think people need to consider their 24-hour day. "Twenty minutes of physical activity, equivalent to a brisk walk, should be possible for most people to include on their way to or from work, or on lunch breaks, or in the evening instead of watching TV." The diseases caused by inactivity and obesity were largely the same, such as cardiovascular disease. However, type 2 diabetes was more common with obesity. Tackle both Commenting on the findings, Barbara Dinsdale, from the charity Heart Research UK, said: "This study once again reinforces the importance of being physically active, even when carrying excess weight. "Changing your lifestyle is all good news for heart health, but physical activity is always easier to achieve and maintain without carrying the extra 'body baggage' of too much weight."
