24.01.2022 The Sutherland community will be better protected than ever before with the handover of a new $760,000 pumper to Sutherland Fire Station today. FRNSW Commissio...ner Paul Baxter, Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott and Member for Heathcote Lee Evans handed the keys to staff at Sutherland Fire Station. The new appliance has a pump that supplies up to 4,000 litres of water a minute for firefighting operations and a Compressed Air Foam (CAFs) system to fight chemical, petrol and bush fires. The new vehicle is fitted with a GPS navigation unit and an electronic message board on the back to warn motorists of emergency operations. FRNSW replaces on average up to 40 vehicles each year with brand new and modern vehicles as part of a $17 million annual program. #PreparedForAnything #ProtectTheIrreplaceable #MoreThanFire

06.01.2022 Lately, we've been re-sharing some of the most commented upon #FlashbackFridays we've previously shared. Here is another one that got everyone talking! Crowds w...ere attracted to George Street North, in The Rocks, Sydney, on the 17th July 1952, when a fire swept through two large buildings. The fire was so rapid, that the firms housed in the two buildings had little chance to save anything. The fire began early in the afternoon on the first floor of the Harrington’s Building, at the corner of Atherton Place and George Street North. Within a few minutes, all four storeys of the building were ablaze. Flames shot hundreds of feet into the air, and a haze of smoke covered most of the City. This image shows two firefighters high on extension ladders, directing their hoses into the upper floors of the two affected buildings. You can also spot the crowds which had gathered in the street to watch. The damages to the buildings and merchandise were estimated at more than 200,000 (approximately $6,600,0000 today). As our staff begin returning to work and the Museum returns to full operations we'll have some brand new stories coming soon! #Firefighters #Sydney Fire and Rescue NSW City of Sydney
