25.01.2022 In 1942, a photographer snapped a picture of then 20-year-old Naomi Parker-Fraley, wearing her favorite red and white polka dot bandana while she worked on a tu...rret lathe at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. Little did she know that her image would become the inspiration for the feminist icon Rosie the Riveter -- or that she’d have to fight for years to have her own photo accurately identified. Fortunately, with the help of James Kimble, a professor of communications at Seton Hall University, Parker-Fraley, who’s now 95, has proven her case and can be confident of her place in history. I just wanted my own identity," she told People. "I didn't want fame or fortune, but I did want my own identity. After Parker-Fraley’s photo was first taken, it appeared in newspapers and magazines across the country. I even got fan mail! she recalls with a laugh. It also caught the eye of J. Howard Miller, the artist who designed the famous WWII-era We can do it! Rosie poster. But Parker-Fraley was unaware of her photo’s connection to the Rosie picture, and in the 1980s, a woman named Geraldine Hoff Doyle saw an uncaptioned version of the photograph and believed it was a picture of herself. Parker-Fraley didn’t realize the picture had been misattributed until 2009, when she visited the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park. There, she saw an exhibit displaying her photograph as the poster’s inspiration but the wrong name was listed in the caption. I couldn't believe it because it was me in the photo, but there was somebody else's name in the caption: Geraldine, she remembers. Kimble met Parker-Fraley in 2015, and he was determined to set the record straight. She had been robbed of her part of history," he says. "It's so hurtful to be misidentified like that. It's like the train has left the station and you're standing there and there's nothing you can do because you're 95 and no one listens to your story. He published an article about Parker-Fraley’s story in the academic journal Rhetoric and Public Affairs, and others soon took note of the historical correction. For her part, Parker-Fraley is thrilled that her photograph and the poster it inspired have made such an impact over the years. "The women of this country these days need some icons," she says. "If they think I'm one, I'm happy about that." 02.01.2022 Few tales in history are more haunting, more tangled or fraught with toxic secrets than that of the final voyage of the Lusitania, one of the colossal tragedies of maritime history. Its the story of a mighty ship sunk not by the grandeur of nature but by the grimness of man. On May 7, 1915, the four-funnelled, 787-foot Cunard superliner, on a run from New York to Liverpool, encountered a German submarine, the U-20, about 11 miles off the coast of Ireland. http://www.redbubble.com///works/14225991-sword-of-justice
