09.01.2022 Suicide Prevention Workshop for Faith Leaders | Sunday, 23rd August 2020 Yesterday, educAid Au ran a Suicide prevention workshop with a special group of 12 f...aith-based community leaders. The evidence-based workshop was a rare opportunity for Imams and community leaders to come together and learn the skills to intervene and support an individual in crisis. This is the first such workshop to be held for faith leaders in the Islamic community in collaboration with Australian National Imams Council. The content of the workshop and conversation around mental health was well received. Delivered by Ziyad Serhan, key areas that were covered included: identifying warning signs for suicide, how to confidently intervene and support someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and ways to transition them to appropriate professional help. The robust discussions and insights shared by participants (representing 11 different community organisations, mosques and centres) throughout the day meant a massive step forward in starting a unique conversation within our faith-based spaces. By starting the important conversation around Suicide amongst leaders, we hope the impact of breaking down the stigma and better addressing mental health related issues will be felt across communities. As part of our work on the forefront of educaid-ing communities at all levels, we recognize the importance of bridging the gap between community and already existing services. It’s for this reason, we extended invitations to representatives from two crisis services who are playing a crucial role in crisis intervention and support: 1. Lifeline Australia: Australia’s leading suicide prevention service that provides all Australians experiencing a personal crisis with access to 24-hour crisis support. 2. Hayat Line (Mission of Hope): a free and confidential crisis support line for Muslims in Australia supporting individuals when experiencing a personal crisis or emotional distress. We continue to remain committed in our mission of increasing mental health literacy in school, community and workplaces.
