24.01.2022 Legislative Review Animal Welfare Penalties and what you need to know The Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 is currently in review and, for the first tim...e in 20 years, you can have your say. Make a submission to the Government by May 21, 2021 here: https://daf.engagementhub.com.au/animal-welfare In the coming weeks, we will be highlighting some of the key areas where we will be asking for progressive change in this legislation. Issue 1: RSPCA QLD will be advocating for tiered penalties for Duty of Care offences. Recently, we had a large scale commercial enterprise found guilty of 41 animal welfare charges in court - failure to treat, living condition and failure to feed charges. However, under the current Act, whether there is a breach of Duty of Care for one animal or hundreds (like in this situation), the maximum penalties are the same. Tiered penalties for Duty of Care offences will mean higher maximum penalties apply to circumstances of aggravation such as commercial enterprise, large scale number of animals, longer period of offending and sexual offending. The maximum penalty for Duty of Care offences is currently 1 year imprisonment. We believe that for more serious offences, the maximums should be higher which will also mean higher penalties in court. You can read more on this issue here: www.rspcaqld.org.au//animal-welfa/animal-welfare-penalties

13.01.2022 Hi everyone, RSPCA Dakabin is a good drop off point for blankets and warm items.

13.01.2022 Our beautiful Penny's Place is on the market. COVID-19 has meant quite a lot of changes for me in recent months, including letting go my little Pilates Studio on Bribie and finding a full time job in - of all places - Maryborough and I love working with the new employer. Didn't think I would cope with that at all after being self employed for 18 years. We are living at Hervey Bay and have bought a house there, loving it too - Snuggs and I walk to the beach almost every day... which is only 300m away and we live opposite a natural lagoon which is teaming with birdlife, we even get Pelicans in there fishing. We walk to Urangan Pier every weekend to the markets on Saturday morning and have even ventured to the Marina - beautiful walk and along the waterfront the whole way too! Penny's Place not surprisingly, is not the same without Mr B and Snuggs really stresses out now when I take her down there. I am not sure why as he passed away at HB. Please feel free to share our post if you have friends or family who might be looking for an Island change in beautiful Bribie Island!!! Cheers Mindy and Snugglepot! See more

05.01.2022 SAVE A BIRD’S FLIGHT! DONATE OLD BIRD FEATHERS Did you know that you can donate your own pet bird’s molted flight feathers to give another bird back the gif...t of flight? Not just wildlife, but companion birds too! There are several avian vets and wildlife hospitals that perform the imping procedure to transplant the primary and secondary flight feathers and sometimes even tail feathers for a bird in need. Birds that have been injured or suffered severe wing clips can land heavily when attempting to fly and have trouble steering, which makes them prone to predators, can cause broken bones, sore feet, painful blood feathers, and wing discomfort. This can also have a negative impact on the mental health of a bird resulting in depression, self-mutilation, and/or feather plucking. Imping will give a bird the ability to fly again immediately. This helps to prevent further physical injury and promotes optimal mental and physical health. It also means wild birds may be released back into their habitats much earlier, reducing the stress of the whole ordeal significantly. Call your local avian vet or animal hospital and ask them if they take feather donations. Do a quick internet search on flight feathers for the bird species if you are unsure which feathers to send. Below are a few well known vets in SE QLD that perform imping: Brisbane Birds & Exotics Vet Brisbane Bird Vet Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital Unusual Pet Vets Who would have thought?
