25.01.2022 #FINALcall Sep16 Qtr BAS + Super are due this Friday! If you use a Tax Agent to lodge your BAS, you have more time. However, all employers must pay their SUPER by this Friday under the new SuperStream standard (which includes sending contributions electronically). The ATO will be monitoring this and those who are late, lose the deduction, risk fines + face more paperwork! https://youtu.be/KBQXb6uSQzg

25.01.2022 For Sept quarter super: You need to be paying and reporting electronically using the new SuperStream format by 28 October 2016. The Small Business Super Clearing House is a good option for <20 staff.

23.01.2022 Today, were continuing surprise audits of 50 bars, restaurants and cafes in Brisbanes popular West End food district to check if they are compliant with workp...lace laws. Fair Work Inspectors are in the area following anonymous reports and requests for assistance from West End employees, which suggest that some eateries may be breaking workplace laws. These reports allege that some West End workers are being underpaid their minimum hourly rates of pay under modern awards. Other reports suggest that employees are not receiving their lawful entitlements such as overtime and weekend penalty rates, and special allowances. 22.01.2022 Maroochydore - the ATO is coming before EOFY! I'll admit I was surprised to see the red flags for why Mdore was targeted ... but also relieved that most I know have excellent bookkeepers and accounts staff (+ their Tax Agents) who enforce best practice/record keeping, and embracing cloud technology and payment methods. Here's some notes I took at today's ATO pre-visit information session.... https://www.smartcompany.com.au//ato-visit-1800-small-bus/

19.01.2022 Its New Financial Year Resolution time! Download the ATO app to take control of those receipts and never miss a work-related deduction again. Work-related mileage is a breeze to record using GPS or point to point. For deductions simply snap a photo of your receipt, add some detail and at the end of the year send the report to your accountant or direct to ATO if you lodge your own tax return. Its so satisfying to throw those receipts in the bin (but dont forget to backup your data).

15.01.2022 As the Plutus tax scam unfolds, fast forward 1-2 years and wonder how the ATOs work towards real time recovery via their future Single Touch Payroll initiative would have made a difference.

15.01.2022 If youre driving more than 5,000 kms for work, dont forget to complete a logbook for 12 consecutive weeks to maximise your tax deduction. There are plenty of apps to record mileage. Ive been trialling the ATO app, its actually not bad, and handy for capturing expense receipts too.

14.01.2022 Before hiring a worker you need to check if theyll be an employee or contractor. Its important you get this right because it affects your tax, super and other obligations. If you wrongly treat your employees as contractors you risk having to pay penalties and charges.

11.01.2022 #spreadtheword Theres never been a more important time to engage with the ATO to manage unpaid taxes. If its not already, make sure that current/future tax obligations (and how you will meet them) is considered as part of your tax planning strategies. ... Were here to help you manage this - well be in contact with our Masters of Small Business in the coming weeks and something that you may not see, is that we constantly review our ATO lodgement/debtor lists to make sure all is in order (+ there are no surprises).

10.01.2022 Good reminder from the ATO to look at the Tax Invoices you receive from your suppliers (& also the ones you issue!) We all know someone who has been burned by bad supplier invoices (they said they were GST regd but werent, invoices over $1k failing requirements, etc) - and in all cases if the ATO does not accept the invoice, it is your business that has to pay back the GST (& then seek reimbursement from the supplier if you can). https://www.ato.gov.au//Can-you-claim-a-GST-credit-for-t/

08.01.2022 #taxplanning Its no secret that we all admire Kerry Packer for his response in the 1991 Senate Fairfax inquiry ... ""I am not evading tax in any way, shape or form. Now of course I am minimizing my tax and if anybody in this country doesnt minimize their tax they want their heads read because as a government I can tell you youre not spending it that well that we should be donating extra." Have you ever wondered what the ATO thinks about tax planning? Check out their rec...ently released video. https://youtu.be/3FcNFScFF7U See more

08.01.2022 Every day were hearing of a new ATO scam email or phone call ... some have been put together by someone very skillful and prey upon doubt. Others are simply time wasters. Do no engage or call these people - if in doubt, call us to discuss. The current scam (active since Jan16) that a few on the Coast have received this week, is a message left claiming a criminal investigation and to call the ATO on an 02 (sydney) number. ...
