24.01.2022 When expertise becomes a barrier: Recently I find myself struggling to move forward in one area of my business. An honest look at myself revealed that it's because I've advised clients in this area of their businesses. Being an "expert" had the undesirable effect of making me a "know-it-all" in this area, and created a barrier to clarity and growth. So, like the mechanic's car, this area of my own business suffered from a lack of progress. Should I simply outsource help? Mayb...e, but not before I get some clarity. Here's the first step I took every morning I write down everything that's on my mind. The goal is to fill 3 pages without judgement. Too much knowledge can overwhelm and confuse. When I write, I dump all my fears, confusion and hopes on the page. In the process, I gave all my thought my unconditional acceptance, which allows me to let them go. One question at a time, I've answered their most pressing challenges where branding, marketing and growing a small business with limited resources are concerned. I've built it from working from home to having a 50m2 studio space at the Albion 5-ways with 3 staff. I've seen both sides of being bigger and being smaller. At Albion, my role was the project manager and creative director for projects with lots of moving parts and contractors. I had overheads, budgets, deadlines, lots of insurance and bills to pay. Now, working from a purpose built studio where I live, my business is simpler. This allows me to be more agile, meet clients where they are, and be more patient with helping them find money to invest in rebranding and growing their businesses. A few years ago a story went viral when an Australian researcher Bryan Lessard named a new species of horse fly after Beyonce for its golden bottom. The story ended up on TV worldwide and appeared in the Time magazine. You can replicate the success in your own business by matching your products with famous onscreen characters. Off the top of my head I can come up with a few Daenerys deodorant/makeup no sweat. Wo...lverine nail care kit for men. Hermione watch for timeless girls. You can do the same with celebrities who havent trademarked their names Lingerie line called Margot (Robbie), Boho clothing line for over 40s branded Elsa (Pataky). Just be careful not to commit your eco-friendly kids range to Blue Ivy because Bey and Jay Z have already lost in court to trademark their childs name in the US and UK. And I just checked the trademark is also registered in Australia for Apparel. It doesnt stop you from using it for say, a skincare range for babies though... (but please check first before you do).
