01.01.2022 Here's our thoughts on the budget BUDGET 2020 SOBERING & EXPECTED BUT KEY MESSSAGE IS TIME IS A LUXURY THAT WE DON’T HAVE!... (Statement by Dave Malone Chief Executive) Our economic reality has been on full show today. Today’s 2020/21 Budget is a stark reminder that the Territory is peddling very hard right now just to keep things going. Economic growth is forecasted to be flat at best, jobs will disappear, and unemployment will rise. That is a very sobering message for us all. But it is also the reality of living with a pandemic. It is also abundantly clear that the Territory Government is smashing the accelerator through the firewall to keep things moving, with a mammoth Budget Deficit of $2.45bn. In truth, numbers we have never seen before! The Budget papers also show a massive fall in Government revenue due to the pandemic, even as Governments’ costs continue to rise in support of the community. And we should not be surprised by any of this. While life has pretty much returned to normal in the Territory, We are not at the beginning of the end for the economic phase of the COVID crisis. We are very much at the end of the beginning. The hard and difficult task of rebuilding is only just getting underway. Rebuilding will require a partnership between business and Government. You simply don’t have jobs unless a business is open, and you don’t sustain those jobs unless the business can make a profit. The Budget has plenty of good and interesting initiatives for small business. They will make a difference. But what we must do is get investment going, and fast! The Government has seen that and made a big investment in infrastructure. $1.75bn has been directed to roads, housing, and facilities. That is very much ón point’ with mainstream pandemic economics. Now the grind begins. Government must accelerate its other projects like the Shiplift. We need a Co-ordinator General to accelerate private projects. And we need an Infrastructure Commissioner to package the next wave of public projects. Time is the one luxury that we don’t have!
