You want to know more about who this person is and what's on their mind? This is an extreme bust shot and cropped in such a way that leaves a lot to the imagination. 23.01.2022 There is no mistaking images taken by street photographers back in the 40s and 50s. There is an atmospheric quality about film that is difficult to replicate in the Digital world. Often the case it might be the content. The cars, the clothes or the buildings. As a young Photographer back in the 70s I was inspired by works from Henri Cartier-Bresson , Sarah moon and Robert Doisneau. Learning and doing my apprenticeship in the film days pre-digital has given me a higher apprec...iation of photography, particularly understanding and learning to capture the image 'in camera' without the use of gimmicky software and apps. 21.01.2022 Heres another black-and-white image utilising graphics and strong use of light and design. Contrary to the opposing image a couple back on my feed, how easily can you pick out the subject in this image. Yes, instantly. If only photographers were to subscribe to this idea. 15.01.2022 A wonderful example of a vintage water scape scene. Even though the format is square the simplicity and design of this photograph is very pleasing to the eye. The boat with its occupants draws your eye immediately. There's a couple reasons for this. 1. The boat is positioned in the golden rule 2. 12.01.2022 Professionals worry about time In the second part of the series again this rings very true. When I moved from being a hobbyist photographer to a professional all of a sudden I wasn't worried about the equipment so much, more so how was I going to get the job done on time. Wedding photographers can certainly appreciate this. Always under the pump! I remember photographing my first high-end corporate headshot of a CEO for a multinational company here in Melbourne. His PA said I...'ve got 10 minutes only. Halfway through setting up the gear the CEO walked out and asked me if I'm ready I said about I should be ready in 5 to 10 minutes. He walked out and 10 minutes later when I was ready his PA said he's already gone for the day. It's always can you achieve the result in the time that you've been given as a professional photographer. 11.01.2022 In this first image of a series of three we study portraits. The interesting thing is that when you type in portraits in google images all these headshot's come up. Also known as a bust shot. The word portrait comes from the word portray. If we study this image and look at how the author has shot the subject. We don't know anything about this person whatsoever. They are bang smack in the middle of the image no expression no portraying. We don't know the first thing about th...em. Portrait photographers in general photograph head shots or bust shots because it's easy. They are using one of the easiest compositional considerations which is 'SIZE' to make your eyes drawn to the subject matter. At a guess I would say that this guy is lined up in front of the firing squad, because that's what it looks like. There is no separation between the subject and the wall which means there is no depth. I see this type of photography everywhere and just by changing the camera angle and by shooting down the wall this could've been a much better portrait. If you are going to take a portrait make sure you portray this person. In my 40 years experience as a professional photographer and now teaching and coaching the amateur it seems like they are hellbent on the next new shiny object thats going to improve their photography. 09.01.2022 This black-and-white street scene is so typical of what you saw in Europe particularly back in the 40s and 50s when Street Photography was prolific. The composition is simple. The author sporting A 50 mm prime lens has used a wide aperture to create selective focus on the bicycle and just used perspective to add depth and dimension right down the street with a line of cars. This composition using the golden rule coupled by clever use of black-and-white makes for a very sim...ple but striking composition that anyone with a standard lens on a Mirrorless or D SLR camera can produce. The secret to creative and outstanding photography and shooting with purpose. A photo essay is always a great way of shooting with purpose. One is the illusion of speed which is fabulous where there is motion blur and secondly, perspective. All of the white lines help drive your eyes into the distance where the vehicle is heading. 06.01.2022 Outstanding winter back shot. Continuing on with studying portraits the question is this a "portrait"? Answer yes. Let me tell you a short story! Back in the mid 90s I won a national professional photographic competition here in Australia with a back shot in the Portrait section. There were three judges and two were international. One from the USA and one from the UK and one was also an Australian judge. I won that national competition and the committee tried to have my i...mage disqualified because you couldn't see the subjects face. What the Australian photographic profession wasn't aware of is they were about to get some education. Both the UK and USA judge gave a mentoring session to do with portraits and portraying and they made it very clear just because you can't see your subjects face doesn't mean you're not portraying the subject. This is a striking winter image that is atmospheric visually stunning and very strong compositionally. 11/10 that's my score Tilnak P.S. You'll never guess what! 06.01.2022 Pictured is the Leica M4. Leica was the tool of trade for famous photographers like Henri Cartier Bresson and Robert Doisneau, who I followed relentlessly back in the 70s. I upgraded to the Leica M6 and that camera was my tool of trade for over 20 years. Taking photojournalistic style photographs both steet scenes and wedding photography here in Australia. When digital came through and Fuji film produced the first X pro1, I purchased that and used my Leica 50mm f/1.0 lens f...or a few years until recently when I sold it, shortly after that I sold the M6 body. All my personal work now is exclusively shot on my Fuji XT3. I love it. The 56 mm f/1.2 is my go to for video.
