24.01.2022 World-Class Safe Expert Doug's Story Doug Wickham left school in 1959 and joined D. Hyauiason & Sons, who were Locksmiths and Safe manufacturers est. 1880, and completed a 5 year apprenticeship. Doug got very involved with doing all the safe work created by the ‘safe blowers’ back in those days. This involved a large amount of work with the Police department, supplying evidence as an expert witness in court cases ranging from burglaries to safe break ins. In the 1960’s Chubb... Lock and Safe purchased Hyauiason’s and Doug got involved with doing safe lockouts all over the country, and became Chubb’s Chief Safe Engineer, specialising in installing vault doors. Doug then left Chubb and, with his wife Shona, established Auckland Safe & Lock Servicing Ltd in Mt Roskill in 1975. Doug continued doing work for the NZ Police, and was involved with major incidents such as the Rainbow Warrior sinking and the Erebus crash. Auckland Lock & Safe Servicing is very much a family business, with sons Mike and Brendan, and daughter Stephanie, all actively involved in the Business. 19.01.2022 MLAA Life Member Cliff Forrester's Story Cliff Forrester commenced his career in the locksmithing industry in December 1969 when David Stewart (Life Member) employed him to work at the AF Stewart Locksmiths outlet in Little Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD. In 1971, Cliff joined John Freeman at F J Freeman in Cheltenham, before relocating to Brisbane in 1972, where he worked for Mister Minit and the John Tann Safe Company. In 1975, Cliff joined J Larsen Pty Ltd, before leavi...ng in 1992 to start his own business Fortec Security. In 1995, Cliff joined the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia Ltd (MLAA) as their inaugural Training Manager in Melbourne. In 1996, Cliff moved to Mount Isa to work for Ruswin, before returning to Brisbane in 1997 to start the Locksmith Apprenticeship Training at Brisbane TAFE. In 2006, Cliff returned to J Larsen as General Manager, a position he held for 5 years. In 2011, Cliff returned to the tools at Fortec Security, but his passion for teaching found him back at the TAFE in a teaching role in 2012. Cliff retired in 2015, although there are rumours that he still does the odd job or two, especially the complicated safe and vault jobs that very few people have the skills to do. Cliff has always been a terrific supporter of the MLAA. He served on the Queensland Branch of the MLAA as a committee member from 2005 to 2012, and he served on the Association’s Board as the Regional Director for Queensland from 2012 to 2016. Cliff is still actively involved in the development of the testing criteria, the coordination of the testing and the assessment of the John Andrew Apprentice of the Year Award, something he has done since 2015.

01.01.2022 Len Lorraway's Story MLAA Life Member & Passionate Advocate for Training Len Lorraway entered the locksmithing trade as a 9 year old, working alongside his father at Keycut Services Pty Ltd and standing on a box to bring himself up to bench height. ... When Len was 14, his father was hospitalised with a serious heart condition. As the eldest son of 7 children, Len left school to manage the family business and keep the family afloat until his father returned to work. Len continued to learn his trade as an employee trades assistant, progressing to partner and later co-owner of the family business with his wife Gayle. In those days, there was no locksmithing Apprenticeship. Workers started as trades assistants and learned on the job. It was many years before locksmithing became a recognized trade course at a technical college in Melbourne. When Len employed his first ‘apprentice’, he needed formal recognition of his skills before he could supervise this apprentice. In March 1989, Len closed his business and travelled to Brisbane to sit a test to obtain an Australian Recognised Tradesman’s Certificate. After the PMG Locksmith’s test proved unsuitable, the examiner recruited a locksmith, the late Graham Reid, to administer the MLAA locksmithing trade test. To Graham’s delight, Len not only demonstrated his proficiency, he also cleared a backlog of orders. Len was recognised as a Master Locksmith and became a member of the MLAA on 9 March 1989. Len completed scores of courses in his thirst to expand his locksmithing knowledge. He became an ASIO Approved Locksmith in September 1992 and remains one of the few SCEC-endorsed locksmiths in Queensland today. In 2003, he obtained a Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training, and in 2013 he obtained a Diploma of Engineering from Melbourne TAFE in 2013. Len has been a passionate advocate for better locksmith training and assessment, providing feedback and input at every opportunity. Throughout his career, Len has trained nearly 40 apprentice locksmiths, including an MLAA Apprentice of the Year in 2014, and several second and third placegetters. He remains intensely proud of them all. Throughout his career, Len has kept abreast of issues and developments in the industry through his active membership of the MLAA. In the late 1990s, Len recognised the emerging opportunities in electronic security and began training and recruiting in this field. Len revels in catching up with fellow locksmiths at MLAA Conferences and industry events, and he values the many enduring friendships that have been forged out of a common passion for locksmithing and security.
